I have to admit it’s a little hard to get up for this particular match, given that this “little” cup competition is now simply a distraction or a liability in our somehow-miraculously-we-find-ourselves-with-much-bigger-fish-to-fry season.

Psychologically I’m prepared to lose this one, say goodbye to this tournament, and hand over my thread duties. (ask me again during the match though!)

BUT something tells me Arteta has a lot less apathy than me. Going up against his old boss/guru is probably fuel enough for Super Mik. Not to mention, that this is the first of the 3 times we face them in the next 3 months, and those next 2 matches are absolutely vital for frying up that big fish.

So it’s our first chance to truly demonstrate our mettle against the behemoth petro club. And I have a hunch we’re gonna see something a little closer to our standard XI than we did for Oxford!

I see no team news as of this time, so let’s hope we’re still at least as healthy as we were a week ago. Not just for this match but more importantly the EPL & UEL matches that follow.

    coyg!?

Win! Lets start the run of beating City and demoralizing them in the cup before we belt them in the league.

No reason to rotate due to fixture congestion. If White is dealing with something, might be a chance for Tomiyasu. Maybe Trossard gets the start if Arteta feels Martinelli needs a rest. And maybe Turner in goal if he has been promised the cups. I'd expect the rest to be the same as United.

I like the idea of starting Trossard if Arteta believes he understands his role. I've already expressed somewhere in these forums that I felt this fixture is less than ideal in terms of facing City in the cup before we've faced them even once in the league campaign.

That was before our consecutive wins against Spuds and Yanited, whilst City was bested in the Manchester Derby.

Granted, I'd still prefer this fixture was later. It is what it is, but I no longer fear the result. If anything, City should be the ones hoping to gain something from this encounter. I hope the doubt of winning the league is seeping in and their hopes of a successful FA Cup campaign clouds their ability to actually focus on competing against the superior team in the comfort of their own home.

I'm looking forward to Friday. I hope we wear the black kits. I'll be wearing mine.

Is a draw the worst possible outcome?

In a statement, the FA announced, "replays will be mandatory in all rounds of the qualifying competition and the competition proper from the first round proper up to and including the fourth round proper."

F*?KIN' KILL!!!!! NO REMORSE..... NO MERCY..... NO WAY!!!

Are the rest of the kits still gonna readily available, I want to get all 4 just like I did last season, I still only have the home red and I got that back in June!!!

These will be the last ever to have the full Adidas "A" and wordmark combination as they announced they have dropped the wordmark and are strictly going with only the "A" logo on their kits starting next season. The changes were implemented in this year's World Cup kits of the nations that Adidas makes the kits for.

Honestly think they missed a trick not making these matches single leg games now like they were doing after covid interrupted the season. Play the game, if it goes to penalties then so be it, get the result on the day. Stop the unnecessary fixture congestion.

Matt Turner will be ready, he'll know that there'll be a TV audience here in The States streaming this match on ESPN+ so he'll want to perform as well for us (Arsenal) as much in this one as he did for us (The USMNT) in The World Cup (conceding only 3 goals in 4 matches with 2 clean sheets in our run in Qatar), and I'm sure that Mikel Arteta will give him that chance knowing it!!! Everybody Mickey had given a chance to prove himself has done exactly that for us this season and Matt Turner will be no exception.

I have a vague memory of Sambi Lokonga being given a chance earlier this season, and it not going so well. Am I wrong? ;)

I want Arsenal to win, but first priority for me is no injuries. If they are going to go heavy for a trophy, I'd rather see them win the Europa League than the FA Cup, if only to start bringing in European honors and this might be their best chance at that particular piece of silverware.

Regardless, I'll be cheering them on full steam! COYG!

I want the EL because then it guarantees CL football next season. While I think its impossible to drop out of the top 4, even if it might mathematically still be possible, It would be really good to get that trophy and be sure of CL next season.

But if we have to prioritise anything this season, its the league.

I'm all on board about still going full out for UEL trophy. I'm also on board about letting the FA Cup slip, as I suspect it might do... perhaps as early as tomorrow.

BUT, as I might've said/alluded above, this next match against Citeh may be more important to try to win for psychological reasons overall, including the subsequent league matches with them, than for this specific domestic cup.

So in that sense, just like @GunnerJacket, I'll be 100% behind a maximum effort at Eastlands in 24hrs.

And meanwhile, here's the transcript from what sounds like an above-average-interesting presser from the boss yesterday (I'm about to listen)...

If we are concerned about the psychology of it, it might be more damaging to go all out and lose than it would to rotate heavily.

Personally, I’m not super worried about the psychological aspect for this team. I think they are confident and together and it will take more than a bad result or two to cause any damage.

But there are a bunch of players in this team who are in need of minutes that we are going to need contributions from between now and May. Give them those minutes, Mik.

If the FA Cup guarantees UCL and the EL doesn't, I would still strongly prefer the latter.

I have no fear of us missing out on top 4 this year. Getting into the UCL shouldn't be a major concern at this point, unless we have the single greatest fall off in EPL's history.

The EL would be our first (cue PTSD from the final with Galatasaray). That's gotta be worth something more than another FA Cup and securing UCL football.

ESR out with a thigh injury. Said to be precautionary and unrelated to the groin surgery, but seems worrying to me.

For the second time this season, Paul Tierney takes charge of us in Manchester having overseen our 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford back in September.
That was the fourth successive loss we’ve suffered under his stewardship, although we have won six of the 14 games he has refereed involving us.
VAR will be in operation for this game
    • Referee: Paul Tierney
    • Assistant Referee 1: Constantine Hatzidakis
    • Assistant Referee 2: Neil Davies
    • Fourth Official: Robert Jones
    • VAR: John Brooks
    • Assistant VAR: Harry Lennard

UGGGGGH. About a year ago I was saying enthusiastically "ESR is my guy!". Now I'm worried about his future at Arsenal, let alone his future in general. Very sad.

p.s. Some cases just seem be nature not nurture. I.e. player not physios.

I thought that winning either cup final, grants access to UCL, at least the qualis. Am I wrong?

Domestic cups grant EL qualification, not UCL.

OK. But winning UEL still grants UCL qualification right? Which I believe is what @poetgooner was doubting

I’ll add I agree with @poetgooner. EVEN IF it was the other way around and the FA Cup carried UCL qualification (which would have come in handy for us in recent years), I’d still prefer a European trophy out of this season and don’t see us falling out of top 4 anyway.

But I can’t imagine anyone here wouldn’t give up the FA Cup, UEL, their left arm/leg/testicle, and bite your hand off for the Prem this year.
