The future is bright! ⭐️The journey to the U-20 @FIFAWorldCup continues as the #U20MYNT kicks off 2023 with a training camp in FL— U.S. Soccer YNT (@USYNT) January 19, 2023
- Release issues also saw some players not make it. Dan Edelman was not released by RBNY. Likely Chris Brady and Brian Gutierrez as well for Chicago.- Bummer that Ben Cremaschi wasn't called up. I wonder if it is a release issue, he declined, or wasn't selected. 2/— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) January 19, 2023 Also seeing on Twitter that Koleosho wasn’t released.
I'm guessing we're seeing the effect of a lot of different release issues and preferences. Remember, US Soccer technically needs to get releases for the actual U20 World Cup as well, which is in May/June. So there's probably some handshakes about how they can go then but they aren't going now then for some of these guys.
I understand that some of this is releases -- Aaronson & Cowell are with the senior team, but it does seem like there's one last push for a real CF, no?
A college player! Wow! I've never heard of Pariano. Anyone know anything about him other than he's from Philly, he's at Duke and an attacking mid?
I got nothing in particular, but I recall that Acito was called up to the U19s recently from Duke. No idea if it's more than coincidence.
I'm surprised the Union haven't signed Pariano yet. Graduated from HS at 17 and has been a productive player in his three seasons in the toughest conference in college soccer.
Does anyone know where we can watch the CONMEBOL U20 qualifiers? I saw a couple of sites mention DGO (DirectTv Latin America) and DAZN. I don’t believe we can access DGO here in the states. DAZN is not listing the games on their schedule
Good point -- I think of him as a NYRB product but he is at Wake. I've never heard of Pariano before. I'm sure of the more prospect minded have, though.
I'm gonna dork out a bit more on U20 callups later but does anyone know which guys with U.S. U20 callups this cycle are now tied to other countries? I think the list is basically Garay (ES) and Valdez (DR) but maybe I'm forgetting someone. I know other guys are in play and that Castilla (COL) seems on his way.
It’s very likely most of these are release issues, but with someone like Cremaschi, it’d be nice to know that definitively, versus if he declined the call up or wasn’t called up at all.
Aside from Quinn I am concerned this group doesn't have enough goals in it. I am also concerned w/ the lack of pace coming off the edges. I will say that I have no idea who Osundia and Mitchell are. So maybe I am underestimating the forwards... but it looked a lot better with Aaronson and Cowell. I do like the additions of Wiley, Wynder and Taskiris though.
Well Aaronson and Cowell should be there for the U20 tournament itself. There's also Clark and Gutierrez. And you have the possibility of Parades and Koleosho. Of course the unlikely chance that Pepi decides he wants to play in the U20 World Cup.
I'm going to guess that Cremaschi declined the callup on the off chance that there was some injury in the Argentina U-20s. Conmebol U20 qualifying starts today.
OK, as promised, some dorking on the state of the U20 pool by the numbers as of the first camp of 2023. If any of this is wrong, tell me! Varas has called in 79 guys. That nubmer is a bit fudgy. We can be reasonably sure there are other guys on his radar, either like Koleosho who hasn't been brought in yet, or like guys in the U19 pool who are presumably in or near the mix. Then there are guys like Pepi, and others who were called in earlier then became tied to other countries. New guys will emerge. Still, 80ish is about the range for modern U20 pools. I'm at 61 current pros with callups. Some guys I'm not sure about (Booth and Downs). Others will likely sign soon. Several guys got their first camp callups this January, but a few of them were on the U20 provisional roster, which I count as a callup because that list was binding in the sense that only guys on it were eligible for the final qualifying roster. Three new January guys (Mitchell, Pariano and Owen Wolff) weren't on the provisional list. I see 20 guys with one callup. I'd guess many of them are still in the mix to at least some degree, but six (Dade, Greene, Ramos, Rodriguez, Van Deventer and Walls) haven't been called in since last January AND weren't on the qualifying list. They might still be in the mix, I of course don't actually know. As for YOBs: I'm at 33 03s, 27 04s, 10 05s. Sealy is the only one I see who had callups during the 01 cycle, which of course never really got off the ground.
It's just friendlies, so I'm not too worried about results. Mitchell was killing it with NYRBII but went to college. Not sure why -- were RB not that interested or was it a preference on his end? He's a speedy striker and I like that after completely failing to find a 9 for this team in qualifying we have a look. Osundina is from Orange County. I know nothing about him except that he was in the U19 camp that just ended. Positive spin: he killed it and they are giving him a look. Negative spin: since USLC doesn't start until March 11th, he was available and they needed bodies. He did play 500 minutes as a 17 year old, though OCSC was a terrible team last year.
