The order is set in advance. Logistically, this also makes it easier for the referee to track who has already taken kicks.

I wish I had all those "Brazil could field two teams!" pre-tournament takes on loop as an ASMR. Maybe if they did, one of them wouldn't choke.

Francophone that I am, I'm nevertheless all in for a Morocco-Croatia final. Although Argentina-Morocco would be very satisfying. "Europe? Hm, I don't believe I've heard of the place."

Quoting myself here, but for clarity, I was curious if this was still the case (as at least it was in tournaments I've been in that have come to penalties). Per the Laws of the Game:

Each team is responsible for selecting from the eligible players the order in which they will take the kicks. The referee is not informed of the order.

If the referee is not informed of the order, presumably it isn't fixed. I'm not sure if there are more proscriptive procedures for the WC. I do know that if it goes beyond 5 kicks and then through the rest of the order, teams can reshuffle after everyone has taken one kick.

They could. They should have fielded the other one.

I'm absolutely stunned. And I think Eric's concerns should be taken very seriously.

I suppose speculating beyond that is pointless. But Celine and Eric need and deserved to be convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that this was a tragedy and not a crime.

I just saw this. I am speechless. Back when DCU mattered, he came to Lot 8 on more than one occasion and hung out at the Barra tailgate to b.s. with us about the sport. He was a nice man.

Given that he had already been feeling ill for several days, it seems like there's at least a consistent picture other than foul play. Thw symptoms he was describing earlier in the week sound a lot like little MIs. But on the other hand, while I might think foul play unlikely, I wouldn't be surprised at this point: given several thousand dead slaves, what's one American journalist? After all, it worked out for MBS and Saudi Arabia.

Really sad news. Grant was a pioneer and the preeminent US Soccer writer. I remember back in the days when soccer was non existent in the medias, I used to regularly read his columns in SI. RIP Grant! Life can truly sucks.....:(

From reports, he was sick the last few days and was diagnosed with a bronchitis.

Five days before his death, Wahl wrote:

"My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you. What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort. I didn't have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.
