I am amazed by that 4-0 scoreline. That's a good chunk of points lost by Sweden. I wonder how they will do for the second game.
There isn't a second game? Australia play Thailand next, and I don't think Sweden have another game until the TBD February tournaments
Actually, with only 36pts between the two as of the last ranking, then having the 1-2 home loss for USA (at 2x value) and 4-0 neutral win by ENG, I'd bet the two are within 10-15pts now. Another loss by the USA to GER would probably do the trick, and ENG can help their cause by beating NOR next (though just beating NOR without a USA loss may not be enough).
USA avoids a team-record 4-loss streak by reversing Thursday's result against Germany. With the mirrored results over this window, USA will have lost some points and Germany will have gained some, but USA should still end up ahead (of both Germany and everyone else).
Yeah, with the top 9 already close before recent results, the February tournaments have the potential to shake things up. I'm expecting the ~98pt gap between #1 and #9 to drop to maybe around 75pts? Not just from USA dropping points but NED and ESP clocking a couple of wins each plus BRA beating CAN. The compression at the top between *so many* teams is utterly insane. In fact... I think we might have a whopping 8 teams above a 2000 rating in the next ranking. It's usually been 5 or 6, and IIRC never higher than 7. Plus, AUS and NOR will have certainly made up a little ground in the chasing pack, too.
Italy have now lost three consecutive friendly matches by 0-1, two of them at home. And if losing to Brazil is somehow expected, losing to Northern Ireland can take away quite a chuck of points, I guess.
Very very roughly, Italy will lose 10-12 points for the loss to Northern Ireland.(note — I'm assuming Italy was at home) What's up with Italy? They're about the only team rated below 1900 that I give a credible chance of knocking out the US in a Round of 16 match because of their technical skills combined with having one or two real killers on the attack. But something seems to be going wrong
No it was away. The home losses were to Brazil and to Austria. But the one vs Brazil could have maybe already been taken into account in the previous FIFA rankings' update (not sure, it's a question of mere days, I suppose). We're stagnating, there's no other word: since at least one year. The veterans look gassed and the new players aren't yet ready to take their place. Also, a lot of energy drained by the Champions' League, were the Italian teams are helped by the internationals (and by the draw!), but the backbone of the players is still Italian. Italian teams are simply not used to go deep into a Champions' League campaign mid-season (after starting the preliminary rounds in August! Many of these players didn't have any proper rest after Euro 2022 ).
Still a noticeable drop in rating points for Italy even if away; very very roughly 9-10 point loss. Thanks for the assessment of Italy. I don't know them as well as I should (I think there was someone who impressed me more than Bonansea at the Euros). It's going to be interesting to see if they can regroup by the World Cup because, if I recall, they're the most likely Round of 16 opponent for the US. Unless the Fates decree US vs Sweden!
well if my calculations are right (let 's say ~around), the gap between #1 and #9 is ~95 pts (USA lost points but Brazil too) In the top 9 : - USA lost 9 pts (-15,3 vs Ger first match then +6,3 in the second match) - Germany won 9 pts - Sweden lost 8,4 pts vs Australia - England won just 1.35 pts (+4.35 vs Japan, -3 for the draw with Norway) - France won 2.7 pts (vs Norway) - Netherland won ~2.1 pts (+ 0.3 vs Costa Rica, +1.8 vs Danemark - Spain won ~2.4 pts (0.9 vs Argentina, 1.5 vs Japan) - Canada won 6.6 pts (+ 14,1 vs Brasil first match, -7,5 vs Brazil second match) - Brasil lost 6,6 pts new ranking : 1 USA 2078,48 (2087,48) 2 Germany 2073.75 (2064,75) 3 Sweden 2057,9 (2066,3) 4 England 2053 (2051,61) 5 France 2025,7 (2023,09) 6 Canada 2003,9 (1997,31) 7 Spain 2000,1 (1997,74) 8 netherland 1996,8 (1994,69) 9 Brasil 1983,4 (1989,98)
Ah interesting, thanks! Guess I was slightly overestimating some of those points shifts, especially NED, ESP, and NOR... Also, totally forgot that BRA was hosting those two matches. I thought NED+BRA would surpass 2k while CAN dropped.
Rank 11 to 20 : - Australia won 8.3 pts (+8.4 vs Sweden, then -0.1 pts vs Thailand for a too narrow win at home) - Japan lost ~5.85 pts (4.35 vs England and 1.5 vs Spain) - Norway won ~0.3 pts (-2.7 vs France, +3 vs England) - S korea won 4.8 pts (+5.1 vs NZ first match, -0.3 vs NZ second match draw) - Danemark won 4.05 pts (+5.85 vs Suisse, -1.8 vs Netherland) - Autriche won 9.6 pts (8.7 pts vs Italia, 0.9 pts vs Slovakia) - Italia lost 18.45 pts (8.7 vs Austria, and 9.75 vs Irlande du Nord) - Begium won 1.5 pts vs Slovakia New ranking 11 Japon 1912,3 (1915,16) 12 Australia 1911,4 (1903,1) 13 Norway 1911,08 (1910,78) 14 RP China 1862,87 (same) 15 S Korea 1853,96 (1849,16) 16 Danemark 1851,2 (1847.17) 17 Islande 1850.91 (same) 18 Italia 1846.64 (1865.09) 19 Autriche 1803.28 (1793.68) 20 Belgique 1792,87 (1791.37)

68th is first even spot in this rating where not at least half of the team on or above it is UEFA. Fairly normal IIRC.
One can only hope! Though I wouldn't be surprised if two days before the last window closes, a surprise friendly is announced and played... The one weird thing about how the ranking currently are, though, is how DPK sits in the middle of a surprisingly wide gulf dividing the top 9 from 11th-13th. DPK has sat at 1940 since pre-pandemic, and here's what the 9th and 11th place ratings have been since Dec.2021: 12/21 - 1959.16 v 1933.8 (25.36pts, both still close-ish to 1940) 3/22 - 1969.34 v 1918.6 (50.74pts) 6/22 - 1973.86 v 1914.9 (58.96pts) 8/22 - 1975.82 v 1917.07 (58.75pts) 10/22 - 1989.98 v 1918.16 (71.82pts!!!) 12/22 - 1983.32 v 1912.26 (71.06pts) Once (if?) DPK drops out, we're looking at a 70+pt gap between 9th (BRA) and 10th (JPN). For reference, 1st (USA) to 9th (BRA) is roughly 95pts, and another 70pts beneath JPN is another 7 places down (DEN). In other words, the top 18 right now can basically be divided into three even points brackets, where half of the teams are in the top-third points bracket, half are in the bottom third, and DPK is sitting all alone smack dab in the middle of the middle bracket. Having such a clear definition between "top tier" and "second tier" is just wild to me. (To be entirely fair, that "second tier" has a 50pts gap between NOR and CHN, so maybe it's two tiers itself, IDK)
Not correct - at 14th and 15th places (CHN and KOR), you have just 7 UEFA teams above, so half or more are non-UEFA. Also 12th (AUS) has 6 UEFA teams above.
You included "on or above" in your statement, so at half still counts. And you don't need an even number to say "more or less than half". 8/15 > 1/2
I assumed you were ignoring counting just the first spot because having only one data point is trivial either way. Counting to odd spots should still count otherwise. =EDIT= Heck I just saw your post included "even" in the original phrasing. I missed that earlier! Sorry. (Though I still think, mathematically, there's no reason to ignore the odd positions)
Strange, there is a little mistake in the new ranking : FIFA forgot to register the match between Switzerland and Danemark, played nov 11. SWI 1 - 2 DNK (where Danemark won 5,85 points)
