You need a guy who is a players coach with a brilliant tactician. For as much hate as Klinsman got he was the cheerleader with Herzog as the tactics guy. It was when Herzog left that he was exposed and it became clear.

Mexico fútbol is caught in this cycle and all the owners and players who circulate through Mexican National team know it - especially if they end up being a “vaca sagrada”. Los directivos don’t care and the FMF don’t care so they do what they do - take peoples money. Tata is just a scapegoat.

I found this old post from 2010 after the WC.Don’t recognize the username. The comments and sentiments were and are the same as now.

Had to come back and post on this. This last cycle was supposed to be Alymeda’s. Here you had a coach who was a proven winner with a team made up exclusively of Mexican players. Above all, he BELIEVES in the Mexican player. Just look at how Orbelin blossomed under him in Greece.

Of course, hiring him made too much sense. The vampire looking guy that used to be at Chivas fu*ked him and so the FMF went with Tata.

The thing I can absolutely never forgive about Martino is that he made us believe the squad was crap and far more limited than they really are. He actually showed to have little faith in the Mexican player and pushed his tactics. I’m finally getting to rewatch the games it’s clear he showed way too much respect to Poland and Mexico should have left with a hard fought 1 goal win. The tactics against Argentina worked for a while, but he essentially conveyed to the players he had no faith in them to scrap out a tie. The lack of an in-form 9 was evident against the Saudis, while the two most in-form forwards sat at home.

Guys, Mexico is not as bad as Martino would have you think. He should have been canned after losing the 2 finals to the US where some of our players aged over night.

Next coach has to be someone who believes in the Mexican player. Otherwise he’ll just be another snake oil salesman that the FMF loves.

Yes, most motivational type coaches have assistants who handle most of the game planning and tactics for them or at least provide heavy input. Hugo Sanchez had Sergio Egea etc...

Who was Maradona's tactical guy on the Sineloa documentary? I think he was very good to deal with a guy like that. Just need the cheerleader coach to go with that. Marquez?!?

I would not say CONCACAF teams have figured out how to nullify a system more so that breaking bunkers is hard. I mean if breaking a bunker was easy most teams wouldn't bother bunkering. Heck, we just saw Morocco park the bus in front of the net and earn a quarterfinal appearance.

I also think there is a misconception that motivational/cheerleader coaches are devoid of tactics. I believe there is a minimal tactical knowledge that most coaches have, and they also surround themselves with pretty good tacticians as assistants. Piojo for example has been talking tactics and schemes and substitutions throughout the cup.

I tend to agree that Mexico is better suited with someone who is a great motivator. I also think having an open mind when it comes to playing the youngsters and not afraid to take risks. We all have seen when we get someone who is rigid and plays the dinosaurs over talented youngsters, it looks stale and ineffective.

The last motivator Mexico had was Piojo. The players plays hard under his command. Piojo had a solid plan A.

The issue with him is when the opposing, competent team adjusts, Piojo doesn't re-adjust. His teams typically has an inadequate plan B.

If the players can't motivate themselves to win a game, they probably shouldn't he on the team. I feel like this wasnt an issue in the past, this is just the last 10 years or so. Something happened to the mental fortitude and I can't pinpoint what it is.

Social media. Have you seen what it’s done to young people? Dear God the sheer depression and sadness that inflicts them when a complete stranger doesn’t give them likes or bullies them. It’s awful. A generation of mental illness like we’ve never seen. And I’m not blaming them it’s all they know. At least posting here you can disagree with someone, call each other pendejos but know we all love the same team. It’s brutal in the cyber world out there today.

To be fair, this is the first time since like the 80's where we don't make it to the next round. It was a whole fracaso. This is much more than just hiring a coach. The whole system needs an update. You don't make a quick hire without knowing what the hell you want to.
