The sarcastic jokes I don’t mind, as that’s the way he keeps the audience engaged through the more depressing material. But his forays into weird sex jokes is always unsettling and reveals more than I want to know about British culture.

(Oliver voice) It's as if an American who loves sex is appalled that uptight Brits could love it too & discuss it right here on the channel which was made by low-budget T&A flicks. I'd laugh, but I'm too uptight to, right Yank?

No it’s not the liking sex that’s a problem it’s the odd British kink. The most famous is probably the interactions with Adam Driver, asking him for example to “choke slam me to hell”. That one is played off as a funny sketch that Adam is going along with, but Oliver gets similarly weird in almost every episode.

Brilliant guy, and god bless him for researching and presenting complex subjects in an entertaining way to whet the audiences appetite to learn more. He’s also very funny, although he relies heavily on his formulaic set ups where he discusses something serious, compares it to something completely unrelated, and then takes that unrelated concept to an extreme.

If I’m at a friends place and they’re watching I’ll sit and enjoy the show. But at some point the thought crosses my mind “I would never want that guy alone around my kids.”

A choke slam is a kinky thing? I just thought it was a professional wrestling move.

I mean, isn’t Victorian morals a cliche? And wasn’t Victoria British?

I think most knowledge of Brits here comes from those farty PBS shows and the Royals where PDAs are a no-no. William put his hand on No Lips arm and the Daily Mail had a conniption.

Victorian morality is big among Reagan republicans, probably because their policy goals seemed to involve the re-imposition of Victorian social conditions

Yes. Pope was definitely the best we’ve ever had. His recognition and positional awareness were better than any CB we’ve had. Excellent as an athlete. Technically he wasn’t the best of the top 6 or so CBs we’ve ever had. I’d put him average among those. But he played a very clean game and his decision making made up for that. Pope to Serie A was definitely more than speculation.

In an all time USMNT back 4, there are three no brainers: Pope at one CB, Cherundolo on the right and a healthy JOB on the left. Pope’s CB partner comes down to tactical needs and chemistry. Marcelo, Gooch, Boca, and Brooks are probably the short list of candidates. My biggest “what if?” player is Gibbs.

I worked in a pub in London for a stretch in the 90s. It wasn’t a trendy pick up joint but it wasn’t an old man joint either. Just a mix of everyone. British discussion of all things sex is repressed...until it isn’t. And when it isn’t, it really isn’t.

    That was a cracker.

Man, was I glad when he went down clutching his calf during that tournament. It was a crucial event leading to the dos a cero outcome in the Round of 16.

Good match so far, but Croatia still doesn't have a shot on target against Brazil. The longer this goes without a Croatian goal, the better for Brazil. They're not spending anywhere near the energy. . . and they didn't have to go 120 minutes with a seriously energetic Japan side earlier this week.

Poor Goose. We haven’t made substantial progress from a results standpoint in the last 20 years. But at least an Agoos type will never make a WC roster in the future. Same thing with a guy like Wolff. Our high energy attacker off the bench might catch a lot of flack here, but they’re far better than those types from that generation.

Is JOB John O’Brien? I don’t even remember him playing left back.

Of course I barely remember him playing he was injured so much. I was a fairly casual fan at that point and my memories of him are mostly from the ‘02 cup, where he was probably my favorite player.

Last three Cups, Brasil lost to the first UEFA team they faced in the KO round. Hoping it doesn't happen again.
