It's a bit early, but might as well start this thread now for offseason discussion with some off-the-field news already popping up -- most notably USL-C saying there will be a team in Milwaukee in 2025. Apparently it's getting a new stadium. https://www.uslchampionship.com/news_article/show/1244108 Discussion around this year's games can continue here: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/y...on-pro-players-2022-in-season-thread.2120012/ Some useful Milwaukee background can be seen here:
If I'm reading this right, USL1 Tucson was sold and will move down to USL2 next year, but retain a right to go back up. https://www.uslleagueone.com/news_article/show/1243887
USL-2 Knoxville plans to step up to USL-1 in 2023, per a league announcement, playing at UT's Lady Vols stadium. The league continues to have a strong focus on the Southeastern states.
Snip: El Paso Locomotive FC reached a landmark moment in club history on Thursday as it announced the signing of Academy products Diego Abarca and Joel Maldonado to their first professional contracts for the 2023 USL Championship season. https://www.uslchampionship.com/news_article/show/1245402

Based on transfermarkt, looks like Seattle signed Kitahara today. Between Atencio, Leyva, Vargas, and Kitahara, their homegrown depth at DM is stupid.

North Texas declined an option on '03 Blake Pope. https://www.fcdallas.com/northtexassc/news/north-texas-sc-announces-roster-decisions-for-2023 MLS Next Pro also announced two new teams; Huntsville City FC which will serve as Nashville SC's reserve team and start play in 2023, and Carolina Core FC out of High Point, North Carolina which will be an independent club starting in 2024.
Glad my Energy are returning to USL-C for 2023! Mostly a rhetorical question--since I don't believe even the club has a good answer at this point--but I wonder if they will bring all of the academy operations under one roof and integrate, with a clear path to the first team?
Real Monarchs' Christian Nydegger is going on a mission trip and will likely be out of the game for 2 years. https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck7BccXOS9n/ '03 Raymond Drai is out of contract with RNYFC; he's apparently trialing in Europe.
It's the first I've heard of during a pro career, I know of at least one player who did one during college and later went pro.
I can think of a lot of non-soccer examples of guys who did this (typically during/before playing in college) but can't think of any pro soccer players. I don't know anything about Christian in particular but I grew up in a heavily Mormon area and played sports in high school, and did have some teammates who played sports professionally. This can be a very difficult decision for a young athlete. Typically a Mormon boy would serve a mission at age 18, and Christian is a bit older than that. That could indicate that he wanted to delay the decision a bit to fulfill his dream of playing professionally, as well as gauge if he had a realistic shot at playing at a high level. That's fairly common for young Mormon athletes. As RSL's academy has produced more professional-level players from Utah I wouldn't be surprised to see other athletes do this as well. But I would also guess that it'd mostly be kids who aren't top-level prospects - Taylor and Zach Booth are Mormon, for example, but neither are likely to serve a mission.
I'm not sure if Ryan Hollingshead is Mormon, but he took a year off to do Church-related volunteer work before starting in MLS.
NEWS: Sporting KC II has acquired reigning @USLLeagueOne Young Player of the Year Ethan Bryant in a transfer from @RichmondKickers.https://t.co/2qJdO3wpKT— SKCII (@SportingKCII) December 13, 2022 He was the young player of the year for USL1 this past season.
Bryant's one of those guys who's been around so long, and with so little hype in a relative sense, that it's easy to forget he's still YNT eligible. I happened to watch him with Richmond in a game late this past season and while it was a somewhat-unusual contest -- I believe they were playing up a man when I tuned in -- they were basically letting Bryant sit deep and pull the strings. That's not necessarily something you'd expect to see a young American get to do, even in a lower U.S. pro division.
https://www.revolutionsoccer.net/news/revolution-ii-sign-jordan-adebayo-smith-and-nico-campuzano Adebayo-Smith leaves Tampa Bay for MLS Next Pro. Another one who's easy to forget is YNT-eligible, both by being an older eligible and being a foreign-raised multi-national. Otasowie, Adebayo-Smith, LaCava, and Marlon Vargas are among the notable players born in the first half of January 2001 who are surprisingly youth-eligible for almost two more years.
RSL signed Zavier Gozo '07 and Luca Moisa '08 to MLS Next Pro contrcts. https://www.rsl.com/news/rsl-academy-forward-zavier-gozo-signs-with-real-monarchs https://www.rsl.com/news/real-monarchs-sign-rsl-academy-midfielder-luca-moisa The roster posted in the Gozo announcement implies that Jack Imperato '02 and Yekeson Subah '04 have left the club or are out of contract.
Loudoun United signed Daniel Chica '02, a defender who was a sophomore at George Mason. https://www.loudoununitedfc.com/news/2022/12/15/loudoun-united-fc-sign-defender-daniel-chica/
Villanueva, Osundina, and Jamison are back with Orange County next year. https://www.angelsonparade.com/2022...ing-back-villanueva-osundina-jamison-for-2023
CV Fuego signed '03 David Diaz to a pro deal after being on an academy deal and heading to CSU Northridge during the 2022 season. He had 2 goals and 3 assists in 900 mins during his college career.
