For many years I have been passionate about adding all the football clubs in the world to the same ranking. I had a few attempts with an excel table, but being a lot of work, I failed. Right now, I've built a website about it (the design could be better) that I hope will gain trust over time (I know at this time doesn't exists any official world clubs ranking).

The teams gain points for qualifying in the final phases of continental competitions, by winning the national leagues/cups and for any match played. Each continental tournament have a standard points system (this is opinionated and in future is planned to be built based on Clubs World Cup results), as an example, AFC Champions League winner get 150 points, the finalists get 115 points, semifinalists 90 points and so on. As another example, the J1 League winner get 80 bonus points for season 2022 and a match is awarded with 5.1pts for a win and 1.7pts for a draw, the national points system being changed every year, based on country coefficients (all details can be found on methodology page)

    to be short...

    Asian Top 10 Clubs Ranking:

    #1 Al Hilal (KSA) 1.230pts
    #2 Jeonbuk (KOR) 1.123pts
    #3 Ulsan Hyunday (KOR) 1.065pts

    #4 Kawasaki Frontale (JPN) 922pts
    #5 Persepolis (IRN) 904pts
    #6 Al Sadd (QAT) 867pts
    #7 Al Duhail (QAT) 798pts
    #8 Al Nassr (KSA) 752pts
    #9 Yokohama Marinos (JPN) 730pts
#10 Urawa Red Diamonds (JPN) 727pts

    complete asian ranking...

    Asian Top 5 Country Coefficients

    #1 South Korea 1491pts
    #2 Saudi Arabia 1466pts
    #3 Japan 1439pts

    #4 Iran 935pts
    #5 Qatar 899pts

Very sad to see what's happening to football in China. No reason why it should be that low. Hopefully the A-League can rise up in the rankings.

Unfortunately, Chinese clubs will continue their poor trend in the standings as they have lost ACL slots and their league strength is steadily declining due of that. Also, one former champion (Jiangsu) has been disbanded and another is close to relegation to the second division (Guangzhou FC). COVID has wreaked havoc on Chinese football, bankrupting many companies.

I'm also a fan of the A-League clubs, but because they skipped the ACL 2021 edition, Australia lost 14 positions in the coefficients rankings.

A big disadvantage for Asian clubs in the world rankings for 2023 will be due to the transition of continental competitions to the fall-spring season (there is practically no 2023 season and there will be no any champions). But, ACL 2022 knockout stage for West Zone and ACL 2022 final will be played in 2023 (due to a delay) and 8 western clubs + Urawa Red Diamond (eastern club qualified for the Final) can win some more points which should push them in the top of the 2023 season.

I've heard the government is involved with how the league is organized. If they were hands off do you think the CSL could've done better in the long run?

I may be wrong, but how I know the CSL history: China was an average country both at national and club level. In 2010, the president stepped in and promises to make Chinese football a force. He did it at the club level when helped companies to invest in football clubs (tax exemption and probably other things): Evergrande took over Guangzhou FC and invested a lot of money to get some world class players. Other teams also followed this idea (Shanghai SIPG, Jiangsu, Hebei) and CSL became a super league (something similar happened in India with Super League). China won the Asian Champions League after a long time, but the disaster started with the covid-19 phandemy when the companies one by one started having financial problems.

Shouldn't clubs be financed by companies like tencent, xiaomi,, huawei and alibaba instead? Those companies are more stable than the real estate organizations from what I've seen. Maybe that can help the CSL regain some relevancy.

Before the Covid pandemic and then the recent political issues, the Iranian league still held a lot of interest for me. But Covid started a trend of games played in empty stadiums -- a trend that continued in Iran for longer than elsewhere because of other issues that emerged in the meantime. The fact that Iran's biggest clubs, including both Perspolis and Esteghlal, were disqualified from the last AFC CL for their failure to comply with professionalization guidelines and benchmarks by the AFC (leaving Iran with only 2 of potentially 4 clubs competing in the AFC CL) and this being a World Cup year, totally extinguished any remaining interest I had in Iran's league. And that worries me since a vibrant Iranian league has always been the cornerstone upon which Iranian football generally, and the Iranian national team in particular, has been constructed.

Yeah, difficult times ahead. Probably we need a lot of years to see Persepolis (or another Iranian team) reaching ACL finals again.

You never know in football, but that is not an unreasonable assumption. The Perspolis-Esteghlal derby was the for the longest time the biggest derby in Asia, played in front of a capacity filled Azadi stadium with millions watching the derby on tv. This will be the 3rd season where the derby will likely be played without spectators. And I don't think there will be much interest for many to watch the derby on their tv sets either, with the most passionate Perspolis and Esteghlal fans these days ironically often Afghan immigrants in Iran.

Iran still have Foolad in the ACL 2022 round of 16 and have a chance against Al Faisaly (KSA). And for the next season they keep their 3 spots for the group stage + 1 preliminary round. But for the western conference, against strong clubs from Saudi Arabia and Qatar who are there year by year, it is very difficult to reach the final.

yes, an empty stadium is a big disappointment for every football fan, even in the stadium or in front of the TV :(

Since the ranking is based on the last 5 calendar years, at the beginning of 2023 teams lost their points from 2018. Also, the share of points earned in 2019 decreased from 60% to 50%, points from 2020 decreased to 60% (from 70%), from 2021 it decreased to 70% (from 80%) and from 2022 it decreased to 80% (from 100%).

AFC Clubs Ranking for 2023 (January):

    #1 (-) Al Hilal (KSA) 939pts
    #2 (+1) Ulsan Hyunday (KOR) 799pts
    #3 (-1) Jeonbuk (KOR) 788pts

    #4 (-) Kawasaki Frontale (JPN) 689pts
    #5 (+1) Al Sadd (QAT) 625pts
    #6 (-1) Persepolis (IRN) 621pts
    #7 (+1) Al Nassr (KSA) 596pts
    #8 (+1) Yokohama Marinos (JPN) 564pts
    #9 (+1) Urawa Red Diamonds (JPN) 539pts
    #10 (-3) Al Duhail (QAT) 531pts

    Full Asian Ranking

Because western side of ACL 2022 will be played in the following month, we expect an increase in the ranking of the teams engaged in this competition.

Updated ranking after Urawa were crowned Champions League winners (May 2023):

    #1 (-) Al Hilal (KSA) 1.184pts
    #2 (+1) Ulsan Hyunday (KOR) 799pts
    #3 (-1) Jeonbuk (KOR) 788pts

    #4 (-) Kawasaki Frontale (JPN) 689pts
    #5 (+2) Al Duhail (QAT) 643pts
    #6 (-) Al Sadd (QAT) 641pts
    #7 (-2) Persepolis (IRN) 621pts
    #8 (-) Al Nassr (KSA) 596pts
    #9 (+2) Urawa Red Diamonds (JPN) 590pts
    #10 (-1) Yokohama Marinos (JPN) 575pts
    full Asian Clubs ranking

On coefficients side, Saudi Arabia is still no 1, with Japan back in business for 2nd place:
    #1 (+1) Saudi Arabia 1.444pts
    #2 (-1) South Korea 1.089pts
    #3 (-) Japan 1.072pts
    #4 (-) IR Iran 643pts
    #5 (-) Qatar 643pts
    full Asian Coeficients ranking

    The following moves in the club rankings will be made by clubs where their national leagues are close to completion (for countries following fall-spring seasons);

There are also some qualifiers for the Arabs Champions League involving Asian clubs, but the strength of the competition is too small to make any difference in the top flight.
