Back in the news... Harvard’s long time fencing coach Peter Brand, who was fired after an investigation by Harvard, was just indicted for accepting $1.5 million in bribes to get kids into Harvard through athletic special admissions. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/16/us/harvard-fencing-coach.html?referringSource=articleShare Also indicted is Potomac MD tech gajillionaire Jie ( Jack) Zhao, who paid for remodels on Brand’s Mass. house and eventually bought it at an inflated price to mask the bribe. Zhao is chairman and CEO of semiconductor firm Parade Technologies. https://www.scmp.com/news/world/uni...n-jie-jack-zhao-and-harvard-coach-peter-brand this is unrelated to previous busts tied to an agent. Zhao is apparently unrelated to a U of Maine professor of the same name who wrote a work entitled Temptations and Misgivings: The Collision of Power, Wealth, Indulgence, and Intellectual Pursuit
While inmates no longer play tennis or golf in the afternoon, Lompoc is one of the cushier federal prisons and still gets called Club Fed (West). Former inmates include Ivan Boesky and HR Halderman.
Pardoning the swamp intersects with varsity blues. Bob Zangrillo, the Miami developer and venture capitalist charged in the USC Varsity Blues college admission scandal, received a Presidential pardon from Trump as he leaves office. None of the other parents caught up in the probe were pardoned. Zangrillo was a big Trump donor. He also received the backing of LA developer Geof Palmer and of USC alum Thomas J.Barrack, who is also a USC trustee even though USC was defrauded. Palmer and Barrack also contributed to Trump campaigns. No word on what the pardon cost.
When we look at sketchy recruits and call-ups, how many others are involved in activities like this but that just aren’t caught?
This is happening at quite a few places now. I wouldn't be shocked to see more coaches getting fired or worse for adding kids onto rosters as a favor or for a 'promise' of a big donation.
Do you really think this is happening still after the scandal and prison time for some? I would think that would give people serious pause at doing it now.
Special admissions for donors and legacy kids has been SOP since universities began. George W Bush wasn’t exactly the brightest bulb in the chandelier. more likely she was told to take the kid for the sake of the University Development office. Still, her sudden exit doesn’t look good.
Wondering if there referee who made the no call on the game tying corner tonight may have a kid with hopes of getting into a school in Southern California.
