This is probably a Fox choice, not a FIFA choice. Fox can put commercials wherever they want over the main feed that FIFA provides to them, they've just chosen that the spot between the national anthems and the kickoff is lucrative enough and that the coin flip is irrelevant enough. (I hate this and think it's a sad commentary on the ever-growing pervasiveness of advertising in sports, they just keep adding a little more, a little more every time, to normalize it)
39 min- South Korea needs to work on their dives if they're going to get a PK like the one Brazil got.
Brazil is lucky to be playing a probably respectful team like Korea with all this dancing crap they’re doing. Try to pull it against Uruguay
It's a clear kick of the opponent without getting the ball at all, though. I've come around on this one once I saw the contact. The Korean defender kicked Richarlison's toe with the same force with which he would have kicked the ball to clear it. This wasn't a soft penalty. It just wasn't an easily discernible one.
It's starting to get to the point where they're showing commercials in the bottom-right during dead-balls, quiet minutes, and other breaks. Live ads during a live game. Terrible.
Looked pretty easy to discern from a world class referee who was in perfect position with a great angle and distance. How often do we see referees make such quick PK decisions at this level? He was instantaneous. I'm befuddled why so many people are getting tricked based on the bad angle replays Fox showed from behind the contact.
As mentioned, just the whole picture including the body language of the two players involved and the immediacy of the referee's decision lead me to believe that this is a penalty even if the angles we initially saw didn't have a clear view of the contact on the first replay or two.
68' The old offside of the injured player lying on the ground. I think that picture was in the law book back when I first took the class in 1998.
77' A screamer for South Korea there. Then, they decide to look for OIO, but I'm glad they didn't give it, there was no interference.
8. Well done. Allowed a little escalation late on in the game. Could have been tidier, but I think this referee generally did a great job and did well in this game including getting the PK decision right.
Is the fact that the Korean player begins swinging his leg towards the ball BEFORE he can really even see Richarlison relevant?
Also go to remember the referee is down there with the players, he way have "heard" the contact if that makes any sense.. I mean like 2 boots colliding. Anyway, I'm not a referee so what do I know but was at the game but just now watching the highlights. It seemed a little soft. The player who commited the penalty actually plays here in Qatar with Al Sadd and has been here for some time. Originally Richarlson looked like he was going to take the penalty, but the fans behind the goal starting shouting "Neymar! Neymar!" so loud, he eventually handed the penalty over much to the crowds approval....
FIFA do exactly the same as before but FOX, ITV here, BeIN in France from whom I’ve streamed many games choose to show adverts instead. I’ll upload a clip shortly.
For what it's worth, my 14-year-old son is a player and referee. As soon as he saw the first replay, he immediately said penalty. As a player, he said that even though Richarlison made more of the contact (shocking, I know), that type of kick from the defender makes it impossible to play the ball. I know I've made a similar call (and a resulting penalty) in a hastily-arranged friendly one time. Ironically enough, it was my kid who was the attacker. He was dribbling along the goal line, and the defender kicked the outside of his right foot. It caused him to kick the ball out of bounds. Definitely on the soft side of the foul spectrum, but the kick clearly caused him to lose the ball out of play. It seemed like the right call to me then. Turpin's call yesterday confirmed it for me.
The penalty reminded me a bit of the USA vs Canada women's olympic semifinal last year... defender is trying to clear the ball, attacker runs in from behind and gets between the ball and defenders kick and goes down and it's a penalty... it's a weird one for me. In both cases I don't think the defender has any idea what they're doing...
