Klopp as head coach, Pep as assistant. Maybe Oliver Kahn will retire as Bayern CEO and become goalkeeper coach.
Right now, I would say Hugo Perez. I'm guessing every coach in the world not named Pep or Arteta will be available over the next four years at some point.
I don't think Jesse March wants to leave club football, and I don't blame him. But really if you want to take a guess at who the next USMNT manager will be, just find an US Soccer org chart and try to identify if any of the higher ups have a cousin managing some non-descript club to a mid-table finish and see when their contract ends. Nepotism will always rule the day.
Currently available (realistic) American coaches: • Pellegrino Matarazzo • David Wagner • Caleb Porter Unavailable (realistic) American coaches: • Jesse Marsch • Hugo Perez Am I missing anyone good? Top choices there are Matarazzo (maybe?), Marsch, and Perez. I think Marsch is the clear favorite. Perez only has 1.5 years experience and a head coach, and then another year as assistant with El Salvador. Two years as USA U15 coach. We all know Marsch: Montreal, NYRB, Salzburg, Leipzig, Leeds. Matarazzo is interesting, but I think he’s more interested in club soccer right now probably. Is there anyone from MLS that would be of interest? • Jim Curtain • Josh Wolff • Steve Cherundolo • Greg Vanney • Pat Noonan • Pablo Mastroeni • Robin Fraser • Peter Vermes Maybe Curtain is a darkhorse? He’s shown he can coach multiple formations and systems with young players, not elite guys. Vanney has lost some shine IMO. Ditto with Fraser and Vermes. Mastroeni ain’t all that. Wolff, Cherundolo, and Noonan are all young and inexperienced. So Marsch, Curtain, Perez, and Matarazzo. Thoughts?
I almost want to hold off on hiring someone for 2026 because I think the tactics/style of soccer is changing rapidly, but I do not want a lame duck or another Sarachan around. It will be a balance for US Soccer to figure it out. For an American coach, Curtain is my favorite based on his ability to develop and adjust. While he is/was at higher levels, Marsch has only shown glimpses of those abilities. Something about Marsch just comes off that he is a much better version of Caleb Porter, but that's just me.
I think Marsch is intriguing as an option - not for his tactical brilliance - but for his ability as a motivator and someone who would instill a killer attitude and wouldn't be afraid to go for it. We always talk about how one of the problems with Gregg is that it's hard to implement his system in the NT setting since you don't see the guys as much. I think Jesse would be much more pragmatic and value substance over style. Just my 2 cents.
This is pretty much where I'm at. I know the 1st goal game early, but shortly before that I thought to myself that I was impressed that the US was taking it to Netherlands but also wondering if they could keep that level up and if Netherlands was basically pulling a rope-a-dope. Then Holland basically steals the ball and marches down on a straight up gorgeous counter and scores. (I saw the tracker of passes, leading up to it. In my head it was a much quicker counter rather than a steal, play with the ball in the back a bit and then explode forward). Anyway, that was, unfortunately for us, a thing of complete beauty. And it was our vaunted midfield that let us down not tracking back (and/or covering). Statement I made to those watching with me was that we had more half-chances than they did. What I meant was the US had more good opportunities to create dangerous chances. The Freaky-Deeky-Dutch actually created more (both in quantity and quality) dangerous chances with fewer opportunities, and they finished them. I think Berhalter did fine. As much as we *should* have gotten out of group stage, so too should have Belgium and Germany. It's not easy. It's an accomplishment to do so. I also think he should be replaced. And here's why. I've heard way too much about how young we are. We're the 3rd youngest team in the tournament. Yeah, by about 2 years. I think part of that was that our goalies were actually on the young side, relatively, too. Which means in 4 years, if we still have the core of this squad, we'll be one of the oldest teams. In fact, if you add 4 years to the current squad, we'd be the oldest team. Everyone seems to think you just replace Ream and keep this team together for 2026. That's not going to work, the coach for the next cycle still needs to turn over the roster fairly significantly. I don't trust Berhalter to do that.
Cherundolo has a fair bit of assistant coach experience in Germany, so I'd not say completely inexperienced.

Seems like a 20-year-old player went full diva. He thought he was entitled to his spot on the team, and that his shit didn't stink, so he lolligagged around and hot dogged it, to the point where the rest of the team took serious exception to it. I'm sure this is somehow MLS' fault.
