the Guardian ripping Fox Sports a new one over their WC coverage. this is really damn funny - are Fox really that bad? https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/dec/05/fox-sports-us-world-cup-coverage-tv-soccer From the moment that Stone called Doha “Dosa” ahead of the opening match – between the capital of a small oil state on the Gulf and a fermented south Indian pancake, who’s really insisting on the distinction? – then promptly vanished from Fox’s coverage for the next three days, the US host English-language broadcaster of this World Cup has offered up a feast of gaffes, stupidity, and unconquerable on-air awkwardness for American viewers to enjoy. (The official explanation for Stone’s disappearance was that he lost his voice, but it’s possible he’d simply wandered off in search of a snack.) Things are, I’m reliably told, far better over on Telemundo, but those of us without the Spanish skills to appreciate the full vocal exuberance of that channel’s commentators are stuck with Fox. The only solution has been to embrace the misery.
That! Is a good read. I’m sorry now the the few games I caught in (English) on sling, I cut the sound. Most of the matches I saw other than those were on The “Cock” and again, because lamentably I don’t understand Spanish, I cut the sound. 3 excitable Spanish speaking comms going non stop interspersed with GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL was just too much. Every time I’ve visited Spain, Mexico and Costa Rica (since 1960) I’ve come back promising myself I’d learn the language. Other than Una mas cervesa that is. Sadly promises broken. So thanks for that Sam. Made my morning as I sit I bed with my first cup of coffee and phone in hand trying to keep Bandit from eating it. That was fun.
funny you should say that about Spanish. I learned it at grammar school, loved it, and did very well at it. many times over the years I've thought "I should refresh my Spanish, get to be "fluent" as much as I can". never have though, which I kinda regret.
Jesse Waters (he of Fox) with his snarky and bro-take down of football/soccer and the USMNT and how the game is not a real sport nor the players real athletes. “No, these are the guys you want fronting a band, not playing for your nation.”
Tied at regulation... What happens now? Two 15's and then Pens if it is still tied? Or have they come up with some other rules to advance?
Have not watched the whole game, but this one looks like a good one...no super rich "players" rolling around on the ground, no time wasting, no circling the ref on every third call, no crying (not yet anyway)...just football, with back and forth action...some good build-up, some fast breaks, some good saves... Football the way I like it!
Sam said it - Japan pens were not well taken...but gotta credit the Croatian GK - saved three of four
It wasn’t so much the 3 they missed, but when you looked at their faces and their set up, Japan simply didn’t look like they belonged in the shoot out. Or had very little faith that they deserved to be there. Which was a shame as they could have won that game outright in 90 or 120 minutes. The Croats always looked like they were at home for their 4 penalties even if one was missed.
