I think the same 11 will start. It will be a tactical chess match. Argentina has a game changer in Messi. Who will step up, Memphis, Gakpo, Klaassen? I hope they practice PK and Noppert can rise to the challenge when opportunity arises.

Argentina were sloppy today as well.

So long as there's an upward trend in the quality of our play then things I think are gonna be allright. They are slowly growing into the tournament and lets hope they peak right in time for the final

  8. Given the "speed" the Orange Squad has played their 4 matches, they spent the energy for 1 match sofar;)

Its amazing because they dont even look like they have gotten into 2nd gear yet. Its all just very slow but effective football

  10. It is so slow, even Danny can keep up with it.
When you watch him "run" in this match, it looks like a geriatric jogging like a geriatric. Man, I'm 72 but I run at least twice as fast as I've seen Danny do this WC.

  11. In low gear you get over steep hills to conquer. High gears are good for level surfaces.

  13. Before their fifth knockout appearance at football's most prestigious international tournament, Biden sent a message of good luck to the national team on social media. After clever editing made it look as though the president had caught a ball launched by midfielder Tyler Adams, he said: "It's called soccer! Go USA. You guys can do it."

In response to the video, Dutch PM Rutte couldn't resist a cheeky dig as he wrote on Twitter: "Sorry Joe, football won."

Netherlands 3-1 USA: World Cup last-16 player ratings
Denzel Dumfries and Frenkie De Jong excelled against a USA side for whom Christian Pulisic was a rare bright spark

    Netherlands (3-4-1-2)
Andries Noppert (GK) Was brave to deny Tim Ream three minutes into the second half and made a couple of decent first-half saves. 7/10

Jurriën Timber (CB) A decent night’s work for the 21-year-old Ajax defender. Unruffled but never truly tested. 6

Virgil van Dijk (CB) Arguably started the move for Depay’s slick opener inside his own 18-yard box. Will surely face a tougher test in the quarter-finals. 6

Nathan Aké (CB) Made a couple of typically smart interventions, including a sprawling headed clearance when under the cosh early on. 7

Denzel Dumfries (RWB) The most dangerous player on the pitch. Was alert to sniff danger and set up two goals before volleying in. 9

Marten De Roon (CM) Quietly efficient without doing anything remarkable as the Netherlands coasted into a two-goal lead. Withdrawn at the break. 7

Frenkie De Jong (CM) His poise calmed things down after a nervy start and his class soon told. Was at the heart of everything for the Dutch. 8

Daley Blind (LWB) The 32-year-old arrived on cue at the penalty spot to convert Dumfries’s cross and register his first Netherlands goal since 2014. 7

Davy Klaassen (AM) Involved in the first two goals; in the intricate passing for Depay’s opener and slipped in Dumfries in buildup to the second. 7

Cody Gakpo (ST) Showed a couple of neat touches and slid the ball through Ream’s legs in search of Depay. Is having a superb tournament. 7

Memphis Depay (ST) Fine first-time finish to sweep home Dumfries’s cross was his first goal in Qatar and 43rd for his country. Only Robin van Persie has more. 8

Substitutes: Steven Bergwijn Missed chance to open up a three-goal advantage; 6. Teun Koopmeiners Booked for chopping down Pulisic; 5. Xavi Simons PSV teenager entered for his World Cup debut; 5. Wout Weghorst On too late to make a difference; 5. Matthijs de Ligt Another late replacement; 5.

He’s executing a tactic that’s working well though. They’re stifling the games in a very non-Dutch way. It’s dangerous, they have as big a chance to win this WC as anyone. Netherlands has never had to go all out so far this tourney.

Frenkie De Jong's overlooked role as Netherlands stun USA with one of goals of World Cup
The Netherlands scored one of the goals of the World Cup as they defeated the United States to progress into the quarter-finals, with Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong playing a key role

The Netherlands have reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup after scoring one of the goals of the tournament, with Frenkie de Jong playing a key role in Memphis Depay's strike.

Louis van Gaal's side ultimately ran out comfortable 3-1 winners over the United States and will now face Argentina or Australia in the next round. Christian Pulisic spurned a glorious chance for the United States three minutes in, but after Depay's goal, the Netherlands never looked back.

A total of 20 passes were played as Van Gaal's side went from one end of the pitch to the other before Depay fired past Matt Turner. It was the role of De Jong that proved to be crucial, though the Barcelona star may not get the credit he deserves.
The move started when De Jong picked the ball up from Virgil van Dijk deep in his own half. After the ball was recycled back to keeper Andries Noppert before he passed it back to De Jong, who by now had dropped to the edge of the box.

De Jong then went into the box, dropped a shoulder to fake to go left, before turning right, cutting back to his left and sprinting across the box before passing on Jurrien Timber, all with a United States player harrying him.

He then moved in to take up the position Timber vacated as he ran forwards up the line. As Timber's run was blocked off, he passed the ball back to De Jong, who played it on to Van Dijk.

That pass was the last time De Jong touched the ball in the move as the Netherlands played it forwards through their midfielders. Denzel Dumfries then picked the ball up on the right wing, before he cut it back to Depay to fire in.

While De Jong may not receive many plaudits, his role in the goal was critical, with his courage in possession in his own box pulling the United States out of position and opening things up for his teammates.

The goal was lauded by viewers, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher writing on Twitter: "Total football! What a goal from Holland." Broadcaster Piers Morgan also hailed the Dutch move, writing: "What a goal by the Netherlands.. best of the World Cup so far."

Not many of the big teams are playing great this tourney though. Only France really. Everyone is beatable and this Dutch team is hard to beat. Not saying we’re def gonna win, tourneys aren’t tough and you have to be really lucky. But I do believe this team is capable of winning and that’s a nice thing we shouldn’t take for granted!

I actually believe this is the hardest Dutch team to beat since I can remember.

The 2010 team with Ooijer/Gio/Heitinga/Mathijssen/Vd. Wiel had a lot of weaknesses that had to be covered. This team has a super solid foundation.

Not the best team, but the hardest one to beat.

The idea was correct... as USA chased for goals, huge space opened for Oranje players to run fast and incisive counter-attacks against USA's tired defenders. However, the execution was severely lacking. Bergwijn played with no confidence what-so-ever. There was one moment that he should have continued to run, instead he paused and looked around in confusion. Then, his (only) shot on goal was completely wasteful, he was closed down and he should have held the ball or pass. I think he'd be hard pressed to get minutes on the next match given his performance today.

That said, I thought bringing Simons in was a correct decision, and he did quite well. He was slippery and played with intents.

Berghuis is not exactly fast... he's running counter-attacks would have not gone pretty. Nor Janssen or Luuk De Jong  Maybe Lang? Whelp, this is exactly why LVG should have brought in Danjuma. He could be yet another fast attacking option from the bench.

    I disagree completely.
He’s a much better option then Janssen or having Klaassen as the 10.
Bergwijn works hard, has pace, and combines with Memphis well.
At Ajax which obviously has been a mess he has not been getting much service and he and Berghuis are the only guys doing much.

Danjuma would certainly have been nice or even Brobbey but it is what it is now.
As game opened up there was some opportunities to inflict more damage and there was some disconnect by a few Oranje players that was unfortunate.
Nice to see Simons get a run out too.

It is very pragmatic of LVG. Far from sexy but it is like a trap system that spring into action the final third. Then they are very clinical in front of goal.

One proper goal. The second goal was a fluke and they gave up a fluke goal. The Argies team did play a younger lineup and sit DiMaria and the like but as you saw against KSA, if your team is defensively sound and communication is strong, you got a chance.

Bergwijn was really good in WC qualifying, but he's been so awful in this tournament. It's really baffling.
