They did show more gears today, but I think their tactics remain the same from what we have seen. That Ecuador game was bad, really bad. They have the quality, but will their tactics match it as the tournament gets more difficult.
Yeah tactics are definitely the same but that's the LVG way. He's not changing. It's not pleasant to watch but it definitely works. The pragmatism works for them. I think if Argentina goes through, they will struggle with the Dutch ways
They may have overcompensated the Senegal win and went into cruise control. Ecuador surprised them and they were in the wrong spot mentally expecting an easy game.
Looking at the paths I think this is what will happen. Brazil is heads above anyone in their quadrant and Holland just looks too good for Argentina (but of course this could happen). The other bracket is much more unpredictable.
What a pathetic display by CONCACAF. 3 wins in 13 matches, 10 goals for & 24 against, 75% of teams out in the group stage and everyone out by the R16. Safe to say it's currently the weakest confederation in the world.
Not surprising. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/match-34-iran-v-usa.2123252/page-7#post-40996060 But this US side is young and talented. With better coaching and experience they might even reach the quarter finals in 2026, also with home advantage.
Aaaand it went about as well as I thought it would once the Dutch scored. Uphill from there. Congrats to all the Holland fans here. Your team was better organized and more opportunistic.
Good game to start the knockout stage. Best NED game so far; solid defense and extremely efficient attack. First Half NED had 5 shots, 2 shots on goal and 2 goals! First NED goal was pure class; among the most beautiful of this Cup. Qatar 2022 is turning into a WC we all will remember. Lots of questions about human rights and workers right, true. But the infrastructure and play have been very good. Lots of upsets and fantastic goals. US leaves the cup with heads high IMO; Best team from C'CAF by a mile. The first half they took the game to NED with high intensity and were very accurate on passing (several one touch build up passing). Unlucky to not have scored. The first two NED goals were world class not many team would be able to defend them. The only thing US lacked in the first half was experience. Second half with many substitution saw a dip in quality; US still isn't deep enough to maintain first team quality. US of A can look forward to 2026.
Soccer is played on a giant field w/22 players over 90+ minutes BUT the most critical parts are the minute details that change the course of a match ie; tight marking in the box, communication(including listening), mentality in start/finish of halves, technical ability on goal— Brandi Chastain (@brandichastain) December 3, 2022 1️⃣ Goal 💥2️⃣ Assists 🅰️🅰️3️⃣ Goal Contributions 🤩🤩🤩That’s how you make a statement at the #FIFAWorldCup! As a Guardian reporter aptly put it, The Netherlands had more of a "professional edge" than the U.S. You could see it in the match. The Dutch futzed away at least 2/3 promising opportunities to score the 3rd goal earlish in the 2nd half. Nice tourney by the U.S. but I feel like I've been hearing Alexi Lalas bellow about the U.S. showing progress for at least 20 years. They are, but it's been slow.
personally think Colombia could play like this too and it would work, I don't personally have a problem with it but as a neutral I understand @HomietheClown
random question here but do you think Dest would have made this dutch squad? Must have been kinda weird for him to play the country he was born in
It was a good effort by my USA team. I watched the game at Cheesecake Factory (seriously) at a mall while waiting to attend the Argentina v Australia game. Yeah, this is Qatar so 2 of the 8 stadiums are literally attached to shopping centers. Anyway, I actually think we could have won this tournament if we'd just had a world class goalkeeper, an elite back 4, a handful of ballon do'r winning-caliber midfielders, and a front 3 of Mbappe, Messi, and Ronaldo at their peak + a Champions League winning manager and about half a dozen equally great substitutes and yeah, I think we could have won this match and maybe the whole thing... Anyway, congrats to the Netherlands. The quarterfinal vs Argentina is going to one hell of a game. When people ask me who I think is going to win this, I say Brazil or France. But when I think about who I'd like to win it, I always say Messi or a new champion. So Holland is definitely in that category, as of course is Portugal. For USA the round of 16 was always where I saw us finishing. Disappointed we only won 1 game and scored only 3 goals but it was a learning experience all in all. Even if we'd won this, with Argentina and potentially Brazil awaiting later it was only a matter of time. All in all, I'd say our tournament was....
Before their fifth knockout appearance at football's most prestigious international tournament, Biden sent a message of good luck to the national team on social media. After clever editing made it look as though the president had caught a ball launched by midfielder Tyler Adams, he said: "It's called soccer! Go USA. You guys can do it." In response to the video, Dutch PM Rutte couldn't resist a cheeky dig as he wrote on Twitter: "Sorry Joe, football won."
