Who is saying this??? Shaq Moore and Yedlin were playing in Europe up until this year. Who were the better options at their positions in the past 4 years??? The reason our top players don't have a ton of minutes together is because of injuries. Reyna, Pulisic, Dest (late commit too), McKennie (suspensions too), Weah all missed lots of time due to injuries. Acosta didn't get called back in until 2021. Prior to that he'd made 7 appearances between 2018-2021, most of which came when Sarachan was the coach. Let's not let facts get in the way of narrative though. Now, could Berhalter have done better bringing in more options at forward/striker??? Absolutely. The FACTS are that the top 11-13 players on the roster are very talented and can compete on their day with most teams in the world. After those players there is a steep, steep drop off. And no matter how many players the coach brings in, that's not changing. Merely playing different players isn't going to bring them up to that level. It doesn't matter if that player plays in Denmark, Australia, England, Mexico or god forbid MLS.
I’ve never heard any MLS fan argue that MLS players should be given preference versus overseas American players. But the Danish league is a weird league to use as a comparison. The Danish league is pretty good, but there’s no real reason to expect someone playing there to be better than an MLS player, generally speaking.
LVG used to coach at Bayern, Manchester United, Barcelona. Ours got fired by a second division Swedish club Enough said
Greg got the team to about our level. Who can take us to the next level…they will have a stronger squad.
Watching the Canadian stream and even TSN is taking Gregg to task for not using his roster correctly, not using his subs correctly, and gassing his players for this game. No idea what the American commentators are saying, but this stuff seems plainly obvious to pretty much everyone.
They are going to protect him so he gets a decent next gig. Taylor Twellman might make a twitter post but won't say anything noteworthy on air.
Same mistakes, same flaws, over and over and over again. This team has so much potential, Berhalter has no ability to get them to that level. He showed it at Hammarby, he showed it when he was a mediocre manager at Columbus, he's shown it for the last 3 years. Time to move on.
My prediction: Gregg stays on because US Soccer is, if nothing else, a dumpster fire. The team will also improve because this is the most talented team in US history and Gregg stans will predictably point to the results as evidence that Gregg is actually good. But we will never reach the full potential of the team and the offense will continue to be an issue.
What results though? We have nothing to make judgments on besides the Gold Cup, which any idiot could win at the moment given the state of Concacaf.
I think he was an ok coach for this cycle. He's a little more progressive and flexible than given credit for. He's shown a willingness to make in-game adjustments and to make big meta decisions (dropping Pepi, Steffen). Seems like a good man manager too. Team played hard. You can argue that a top manager might have had this side in the semis. Netherlands-Argentina is a tough gauntlet though, and we have some roster limitations (specifically depth). I think he did a commendable job for this cycle. Got a few things wrong with his subs and selection, but overall put the team in position to be competitive. I'm with others in wanting a more experienced tactician moving forward though. One area where I think he made a mistake was not gambling on upside with some of his backup selections. You know what guys like Shaq, Acosta, and Morris bring, and it's really not enough for this level. I understand maybe wanting veteran presence for training and off-field vibes, but you might think those spots would've been better used on some of our high ceiling youth. Watching Morris lumber down the pitch on fresh legs in the 85th+ minute cemented my belief that it should've been someone like Cade Cowell in that spot if we wanted an athlete for super sub duty to run at tired legs. And in midfield it would've been great to have a credible alternative to MMA so we could at least think about giving them some rest. I don't know who that would be. Busio? Booth? Someone else? I just know that the dropoff from our top three CMs to the next guy is massive.
This is exactly what the Gregg stans point to. Even though it is a meaningless tournament that most countries bring their B/C squads too. But I do think we get better results in qualification next cycle. The team is just too talented.
no way. Dont want Jesse, either. need to get away from rigid "system" coaches....all Marsch can coach is the gegenpress red bull style
being an "MLS player" is not a blanket statement on a player's level. Being a domestic MLSer is MUCH MUCH MUCH easier than being a high-priced DP MLSer. You can't use league quality to parse that difference. Simply being an American playing in a European First division team automatically means that you are basically in the top 10% of all Americans in the US player pool, basically. ...even in the Danish league. A player like Sabbi or Cappis likely compares favorably to morris or roldan, for example. Europe knows the sport and buys the best players. Can anyone dispute that? An American in Europe is almost always going to be better than an American in MLS...and in 2022 and moving forward there will ALWAYS be at least 23/ or 26 Americans in euro first divisions....the entire roster in any future world cup must be EUROPEAN PLAYERS.
GGG needed to take a page out of Juergen's playbook and left Pulisic or Reyna home and called up Maximilian Dietz so the players would be out of their comfort zone. That was really what did GGG in.
I think Gregg went with team vibes when creating the roster, which is somewhat important. I think Jozy Altidore would have helped this team.
Overall I think Gregg did well and am proud of the result from this cycle. But 2-cycle coaches are a mistake for the US. We shouldn’t make it again. I know the argument will be that the core of the team for 26 is already set, but it’s a mistake to believe that argument. No one is guaranteed a spot on that roster - if someone better comes along, we need to bring them in. A new coach with no pre-conceived favorites and willing to make hard decisions to make this team better is necessary. Gregg has been through a lot with this squad and he knows them and owes them for all that they gave to the shirt. I respect that, but we have to have fresh, un-biased eyes in order to get even better.
