Ah, so Poland was "leading" on fair play. Landon and Ian Dark didn't seem to know and somehow couldn't figure out "the math" about who would go thru - at one point Landon saying that some "nerd at home" is probably figuring it out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's actually not that hard. That was pretty poor of them to not know the situation. They don't even have a crew telling them what's up?

The Saudi goal did have impact in a way as at that point Mexico needed 2 goals and not just one to go thru, though obviously there was little time left to do so. It was still a pretty good dagger.

Landon stated the correct situation pretty quickly after the Saudi goal, but Darke was still confused.

No, they still needed one goal. If Mexico had scored in the small amount of time after the Saudi goal, they would have won 3-1 and advanced on the goals scored tiebreaker.

True but previously Landon stated that the situation was so mathematically difficult ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

Ah yes, that's right, they would have gone on via goals scored.

It's been a great two days. US through. Bale (out of the World Cup) and Mexico out.

It would have been more fitting if Mexico got knocked out because they are dirty hacks (fair play rules)... but I'll take goals against.

They actually went out on GD I think.

Even in the group stage, "crap shoot" is still pretty solidly in play. One goal often makes the difference. Even Argentina was sweating a bit. The US played well throughout but w/o that one goal against Iran, would have gone out undefeated (and unvictorious). I think Argentina and Mexico are the best teams in Group C, but Mexico didn't get it done.

I am very sad for Mexico, they have such great fans and the players tried so hard. But concacaf is making such a poor showing. USMNT likely to play only one more game than Mexico. Funny how both berhalter and Tata don’t seem to pick the right forwards.

Saw a tweet that xG should be used as a tie-breaker. Must have been a @JazzyJ burner account. :)

    World Cup Elimination

Following Mexico's elimination from the World Cup group stage on Wednesday, the team and head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino have parted ways….

Haha, even I would think that’s dumb. I mean it is a measure of the amount of “danger created” but then there are different methodologies for finding the number and which one would you use, etc. Fair play is pretty lame too but it gives teams a slight incentive to avoid hacking too much, though it’s unlikely you’d get to that tiebreaker. I think it did send Japan thru one time, not sure if it was last WC.

Good chance we get thru this WC w/o a forward scoring. Yeh? Not sure what's going on with Gio Reyna, but I'd just put him in there even though he's technically not a forward. Just give up on the #9 thing, it's not working. I see some positive ratings for Sargent, because he held up the ball a few times?? Pretty low bar. Fairly early in the game someone (Dest?) dropped a long ball in his lap. He brought it down with one foot, then it hit the other foot - CLANG!, and the ball made a beeline to the end line - the chance wasted.

Good call, although it wasn't really a back and forth tactical game where each team is trying to hold possession like say a Spain-Argentina match might be. Japan used the same tactics they used against Germany. That is, sit back and cede lots of possession to your opponent and try to minimize damage. In the 2nd half - completely different, high press. Worked like a charm both times.

Anyone know why MLS is going back so far? Seems like LAFC had to be breaking rules in 2022.
