So no Villarreal on Elfath's game tells you what FIFA really think of the penalty kick? No?

I'm guessing they wanted VAR intervention there?

Sometimes I'm wrong. But I only get to share how spectacularly so by writing out my thought process.

Bit of an Occam's Razor situation here.

Well Looks like I was wrong about Elfath!

Elfath's VAR will be Hernandez Hernandez, who was Mateu Lahoz's VAR for that first match between Qatar and Senegal, which of course also involved a penalty decision (or non-decision).

All three Spanish VMOs are on the Cameroon vs Brazil match. Maybe the committee wants them to observe Brazil.

    So referees with 1 match...

    Frappart
    Conger
    Gassama
    Sikazwe
    Matonte
    Beath
    Al-Jassim
    Escobar
    Valenzuela
    Marciniak

Marciniak's name sticks out with big flashing lights. I can't imagine anything from his game that would put him in danger. So I suspect FIFA kept him clean, particularly if Poland went through, so they can have more options in which to use him. Particularly so given the fact so many other Europeans were needed for today and tomorrow.

I also suspect one of Valenzuela/Matonte will work again. You can't just have Brazilians and Argentinians doing the KO matches and you need other South Americans. Presume Valenzuela is in pole position there.

So I'll say Valenzuela and Marciniak both break the trend of only getting KO matches if you did two group matches. Everyone else is done. But I've been wrong before and expect to be so, to some extent, here (I keep wavering on Beath--particularly if Faghani is in any trouble).

But that probably does seal his fate for the KO stages, especially with the US advancing. If Morocco goes through, too, the options for him might be quite limited given he probably can't touch the Group H teams again either. So even if they wanted to use him on merit, there are challenges!

But I think, on merit, Barton deserves it.

Love this assignment. Was wondering if they'd do something like this but I was focused more on Croatia-Belgium because of rest issues.

I think Matonte will be the non Brazilian and Argentine to get a KO match.

On a lighter note, with 15 minutes to go in Group C, Poland are advancing to the last 16, and Mexico are going home simply by virtue of having had fewer Yellow cards - 5 plays 7!

Points, goal difference and goals scored all equal.

    :)

So we know Argentina-Australia and then Netherlands-United States on Saturday. We can look at rest days and who's worked whom.

If Marciniak is palatable for Argentina-Australia, seems like he fits. If not... Turpin?

None of the CONMEBOL referees easily fit on the Netherlands-USA match other than Matonte, unless someone is repeated for a team. So maybe it's him. I don't know what the alternative looks like. I can come up with strong arguments against every specific referee from CAF and AFC.

Are you surprised then to see both Argentinian refs used on MD3, especially Rapallini on Serbia-Switzerland? Wouldn't it have made more sense to use Marciniak on Serbia-Switzerland and Rapallini on USA-Netherlands?

I would think Ghorbal would have worked the US vs. Netherlands match, but I don't think there is enough rest for him.

Maybe Marciniak if they choose to break confederation neutrality?

I'd be thrilled with Marciniak. Of course the US fan on BS who would complain about a European ref on this game but also complain if a CAF or AFC ref got assigned so.....

    My 'tuppence' worth:

    1) Too much focus on appointments regarding Frappart. I know it was a different era, but Peter Mikkelsen was sent straight into W Germany vs. Yugoslavia in 1990 with a vaguely comparable resume as her in men's competitions, and did an absolutely superb job. Appointments should ≈ ability, but of course the real assessment of ability, is ability. The simple fact is that Frappart isn't that good. UEFA/FIFA have been wise keeping her out of focus but, with all respect, she can't really properly handle games like Malta vs. Faroe Islands (as a specific example). Many people will look at 'our' discussions and think "they are ***ist, why not give 'them' a chance?". In general, I agree - it is worth compensating for the difficulties these (brave) women face by giving them a better hand. I don't think how far off the pace of their male colleagues Frappart is, is completely understood by many of 'us' (it is verrryyyyy far IMO).

    2) 'The' above comments are absolutely disgusting. We've all reffed and cut our teeth on tough, hard grasroots games - I genuinely can't imagine how hard is to do that as a female and stick to it through the thick and thin (when there are such views as 'above' etc).

For that they will always have my deep, deep respect.

I'd take Marciniak in a heartbeat on Saturday. I would imagine that there would not be a lot of pushback, if any, from the US if FIFA said that they'd put a top European on that game. I know I wouldn't have an issue. I'd probably take Makkelie over some of the refs that could work the game even though he's Dutch.

She could mess up the match tomorrow, as could many referees. But it is absolutely hilarious to see you guys losing your minds about an all-female crew. :ROFLMAO:

My hunch was that they'd go with either Gomes or Ghorbal - check a box and use a CAF referee in the Round of 16 where you're probably safe (here's hoping only one of those two!). I would agree with Matonte too, except that I think Valenzuela is more likely to go forward than Matonte and I don't think they'd reuse him. I'm curious as to your (or others') strong argument against either of them. (I guess you could argue against Gomes b/c of Dutch/SA history.)

The three non Europeans that make the most sense to me based on rest and performance are Sampaio, Valenzuela and Ghorbal. The issue is all three have had one of these teams. Maybe it doesn’t matter, though.

Rizzoli even had Argentina three times in 2014: group stage MD3, QF, and Final.
