I'd love to see Metro make a move. That would also facilitate a future move to Salzburg in the future for him.

And a loan to a lower tier Eredivisie team... Salary is too high vs. his level for a team to buy him at his current wage.

Good news is his injury seems not to be nagging him anymore. It's a long shot, but with Blind's age and Ajax always active transfer department it's still not beyond imagination he plays his way back into the squad, but I think it's more likely he goes somewhere else over the summer, especially if he has a decent rest of the season.

  4. Given how he was treated by Ajax from the moment they signed him I would let the contract expire and move on after that.
They literally killed his ambition and joy of play by putting him with a successful long string of Eredivisie matches for sc Heerenveen by putting him immediately in the second tier league, where he literally has nothing to learn from given his Eredivisie pedigree.
I got the suspicion they only bought him to prevent Feyenoord/PSV/AZ to strengthen their back line with him at that moment. It's the only explanation that makes sense. I at that moment already wondered why they bought him, given they then had ample supply of defenders.

It's odd, because Ajax had him on the bench for a couple of Ered games and a UEFA match right off the bat in 2019, while playing him regularly in the Jong side and he was getting games with the Oranje U20 for the 2nd half of the year. I think he just didn't live up to expectations - then injuries really knocked him off course while at Twente. But yeah, Ajax would need to be put in a real spot to feel like they should give him another shot. But I do think Pierie would take it - seems like he wanted to be an Ajacied.

I don't think there's any chance he ever plays for Ajax. They've had Magallan on benches this year over him. They've had giant needs for left footed defenders and bought several players over promoting him.

I think they bought him with the idea that 'hey, X% of guys who start at a very young age in the Eredivisie so this is a smart buy.' Then they had him train/play and thought he wasn't good enough for Ajax. One thing I do like about Ajax for young players: when someone isn't good enough, they try to move on quickly vs. hold onto them.

From what I read on various Ajax forums, he did start at a very young age for Heerenveen but wasn't exactly good. Kik was starting because of a crisis of defenders.

Excelsior is a very low level. I hope he considers coming to MLS vs. play for lower tier Eredivisie teams. But that's a personal choice.

I think that analysis of his play is not correct - or at least incomplete. He got a lot of games for Jong Oranje treams - esp U17 and U19 as well as a ton of games for 'veen as well as Twente. I think it's a combo of a kid who physically matured earlier than some, but whose game didn't continue to advance as quickly once he peaked physically, the obvious injury issues at Twente, and Ajax just being really hard to crack, esp with them married to Blind in that spot. But given the fact that he's just 22, he already has nearly 100 Ered games, and another 70 youth/Eereste games under his belt and almost 50 Dutch youth caps. Assuming his back issues are behind him, and given Defenders tend to have a later maturation date, I think he's likely to end up as a solid Ered pro who makes his way to Germany or England, but I think he's missed the Ajax/National team boat, barring something very unexpected happening to Ajax' bench.

I don't think the bench of Ajax this season is at all hard to make for a left footed defender: Magallan is going to be given away this winter. Wijndal/Kaplan have been out for significant periods. If there was a year to break through, this would have been it.

I agree he's had a weird career... going from Eredivise regular to playing for Jong Ajax was strange. His last Dutch YNT game was 3+ years ago-- clearly his star has fallen quickly.

I don't see some regular in a big league. If he was that, at 22, he would've been scooped up by now by a team at a much higher level than Excelsior on a loan. But I would like to see him play every week and I'm very happy to be wrong about his level.

Really depends on how much the Twente injuries set him back. I don't think as much as some might think, but I do think his desire to be an Ajax/Oranje player burned a year in the Eerste, but showing he's solid doesn't hurt. Time will tell if he's more Kasanwirjo or Martinez in a few years... lol

  10. Incorrect. He has a string of selections for Team of the Week from several media, including leading footy magazine Voetbal International. On top of that he was playing for the young orange squads.

JAjax - and probably Kik - return to action v JUtrecht tomorrow. Be surprising if he didn't get his usual start.

Stumbled on an article dated yesterday: Wonder what the dates of the loan are, since the Eerste is still going but the Ered is officially dark till Jan (but teams are playing friendlies.) I'm now guessing maybe he's already with Excelsior? Not sure. (did a quick google-aided translation below.)

"I went to Ajax with high expectations, but needed a little longer

Pierie is on loan from Ajax to Excelsior for the second half of the season. The 22-year-old defender arrived in Amsterdam with high expectations more than three years ago, but has recently disappeared from view for the general public. He has yet to have an official debut with Ajax 1. Pierie hopes to be important again in the Van Donge & De Roo Stadium. “I need that very much myself.”

Injuries and the almost always cut-throat competition in the heart of the Amsterdam defense meant Pierie never fully lived up to expectations. He was loaned to FC Twente for two seasons in the summer of 2020, but only played 27 games in Enschede. Last summer, when Excelsior was already set, Pierie chose to play for six months at Young Ajax in the Eereste in order to gain rhythm. In the second half of the season, he will play on loan in Rotterdam.

“Some things happened that have affected my development. That means I haven't played at the level I wanted for a while and that 's why I'm taking this step," KP was approached by clubs from the Netherlands and abroad, but soon opted for Excelsior. “I wanted to play in the Eredivisie again. The chances of that were a lot higher here. Also, I immediately clicked with the technical staff. They showed that they really wanted me. Since I arrived here, I really feel at home.”

Summer 19, Ajax paid five million euros to sc Heerenveen for Pierie. “I went there with high expectations, but it turned out that I needed a little longer. Of course I would have preferred to continue (playing time) like at Heerenveen, but my time in Amsterdam has made me a different professional. I've seen what it takes to reach Ajax 1 level. That is a matter of talent, but also hard work. There are guys who are now playing in the top of England, you have been on the field with them and learned from them. That is very valuable.”

    Future at Ajax
It's now important for Pierie to (get time) with Excelsior in the Eredivisie. Dijkhuizen's team is fourteenth, but lost four of the last five league games before the break. Kik hopes to contribute. “I hope to be important for the team. I need that very much myself.” The contract of the American-born defender with Ajax will continue until mid-2024. Pierie does not know exactly what his future looks like. “I focus on this step right now. Everything will be open again next summer. For now I want to make a lot of minutes and enjoy playing in the Eredivisie, because I really missed that.”

No Pierie (or Booth) in the Jong game today (JUtrecht win 2-1 despite a RC and the fact they're bottom of the table in the Eereste. I'm guessing KP is already over with Excelsior or Ajax at least agreed to put him on ice till he's allowed to join - which makes sense.

Excelsior beat Brugge in a friendly yesterday, and while I haven't seen a full squad list for Excelsior it doesn't look like Pierie figured... haven't seen any confirmation if he's training with them yet.

according to this he joined them immediately:

How Kik Pierie came as a comet, but in recent years unexpectedly disappeared from the radar
With Kik Pierie on loan from Ajax, Excelsior brings in a wealth of experience despite his young age. After difficult years, the 22-year-old left-footed player in Rotterdam wants to regain the upward trend with which he impressed at a very young age. I haven't seen anything to indicate that. He's played a full 90+ in literally all but one of JAjax' games this season. He played to the whistle on Nov. 14. The loan was just recently announced. May take him a minute to catch up to them in Portugal (After all, he's got to move all his stuff the long 74 k from Amsterdam to Rotterdam.)

At the very least, he's healthy enough to hold a bowling ball.

Excelsior played a friendly against Portimonense. Kik Pierie didn't play the 1st or 2nd half.

Is it possible Kik can train now but can't 'play' until January?

  22. Wonder if Ajax would have allowed him to go on loan to Feyenoord.
We're in trouble as our rock solid central defender Trauner is out for months after injuring his knee in training.

Just saw an article (in Dutch) that mentions Pierie was struggling with "physical issues" but it was kind of in general about the transfer (and my Dutch is terrible) so I can't tell if they mean in general (ie. his time at Twente) or currently (ie. since his last Jong Ajax game.) I've not seen it reported elsewhere (but haven't really looked.)

For anyone more Dutch than I: Na het aantrekken van Kik Pierie, die tot het einde van het seizoen wordt gehuurd van Ajax en momenteel met fysieke klachten kampt...
