If it's anything like the original, I don't think it matters.

The great thing about capitalism is that where one person sees tragedy, another person sees opportunity.

So sad that old Vova broke up a love affair founded on mutual xenophobia and homophobia. :cautious:

Things may start to pick up in Ukraine soon. The forecast is for below freezing temperatures for at least the next 2 weeks.

This could be enough to freeze the ground and open up the possibility of making advances that aren't impeded by the mud.

Downside... Below freezing temps is brutal for both humans and machines.. But considering Russians are basically just leaving their troops completely exposed to the weather, we could be looking at a lot of Russians dead and dying from exposure.

This is an update from Ursula on the war (unedited video)

  11. She also wanted to seize the frozen assets of the Russian central bank and the oligarchs (about 320 billion€€) to compensate the Ukrain.
Dunno if that's even possible from a legal pov.

Seizing the assets of a foreign governmental entity is a tricky proposition. Regarding the oligarchs, in the US at least, I don't see how the government could seize their property without compensation, as the US Constitution is very clear that the government can't just take peoples' property, no matter how odious the person might be.

That's another reason why so many Global South nations aren't eager to take the side we expect them to. They view this as "we could be next of we aren't doing what we're told". This explains the growth of the SCO, BRICS+ and talks about dedollarization that has multiplied like the Saudis dealing in other currencies to BRICS & South America wanting their own currency.

Kind of odd that those nations would take the side of one of the most prolific colonizers in human history.

And don't remind him of what the Wagner Group was founded to do (i.e., shoot people in Africa, mostly).

Even more odd that they would take the side of countries that don't ask and just tell. If they think they will take a back seat to the US, wait until they get a tap on the shoulder from China.

Claims that I've seen is that the 100,000 are total casualties (including WIA) and most of that is actually back on the front now.

I figured total casualties but you are saying most WIA are back in action?

Yes. From what I understand, Ukraine's KIA to WIA ratio is much closer to 1:3 or better, compared to Russia which may 1:1 or worse.

If we could go back to 1999 *and* Russia was humiliated enough to never engage in aggression (and publicly pledge to it), that would be the biggest foreign-policy win for NATO in its history. And would allow NATO states to pivot towards tackling China.

I don't think it's feasible in the near term. But once Russia loses this war, those are the concessions we will want to extract. We won't want to jeopardize the territorial integrity of Russia as that would involve committing thousands of troops in land wars across Asia for decades, so a stable, nominally-democratic Russia with zero offensive capability where the leaders can loot its natural resources sounds pretty damn good to me.

The alternatives are, of course, Russia winning in Ukraine OR Russia imploding into dozens of small states with chaotic outcomes.
