The Guardian had story on this a few years ago. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...g-moments-clive-thomas-denies-zico-and-brazil The video is on YouTube as well if you search Clive Thomas.
Two very, very tight offside decisions in a row. Flag goes up, a goal that would have been Mexico's third is denied.
'58- That's an interesting play on the slide leading to the corner. He gets a lot of leg before reaching the ball there. It should never be a foul, but after seeing the VAR intervention in the POL/ARG game, it's really confusing what is and isn't trifling contact in the post-VAR world.
64' Oliver says the ball hit above the bottom of the armpit, but it sure looked like a handball in my live view. Should be a Saudi FK.
It'll be interesting if fair play points decides this one, though I never really thought this was a "fair" tie breaker given how inconsistent this can be from match to match.
Meh, it's apparently a 7-4 Mexico "lead" in yellow cards right now, so really only if Makkelie finds a ton of stuff in his match suddenly. But that non 2CT on Matty Cash is looking even more consequential right now.
Do you have any idea if the CRs are made aware of the situation? Since messages can get to players, sure would be nice if the refs also knew what was going on to anticipate events.
My idea is that everyone would know at HT what the situation is. I don't think anything formal would come during the second half, though it wouldn't be hard for Makkelie or Oliver to learn the updated score since everyone else on the field would learn it. But would someone be piping in information about the card count? No. And honestly, why would they? I don't see how that information would be good for a referee--all it could do is get him in trouble.
To me it seems pretty simple: there's one decision that would be clearly correct by the book and by common sense, and a different decision that would be popular. A referee should never put his own popularity ahead of getting the call right on the field. Oh, and by the way. Currently Poland is only holding onto 2nd place because they are ahead of Mexico on fair play points. Technical accuracy isn't everything, but it is intrinsically important. And we should be able to trust the referee's committee will value correctness more than public perception. Getting a critical match decision right should be absolutely the first priority. Looking good getting it wrong shouldn't excuse the mistake. I like a lot of what I see from Oliver today. But assuming the player pushed him (I haven't rewatched the video yet), that's gotta be a second yellow card, at least. Which puts Oliver's second game in the same category of Sampaio's to me: a very well refereed match spoilt by a missed 2CT.
81' Oliver gives a FK from 19 yards, and I felt it was a flop. However, gives a correct YC fir SPA-F if you're giving that.
85' Two legged tackle by Mex. Ball first then rolls in. Good foul. Risking another yc point, lol, not given.
