I don't see how that can be a penalty. The ball's already out so there's no interference in the play. The contact is clearly just a follow through of both going for the ball.

That's justice. Messi's header was way off target already.

As for the pk, Messi telegraphed it w/ his body shape. Ronny would never...

It’s okay because it’s Messi, but when CP does it… we riot. :p

As a fan of computer chess, and god knows computers now are an order of magnitude better at chess than any human, something I notice is how alien the games often are: no one understands anything any more, since the machines are playing at a higher level.

Now with VAR being computerized, the ball having sensors, having machine-learning computers as ARs and what not, I can see it starts happening with soccer too. Expect it to get more and more alien to us, to see calls that you don't understand but make perfect sense to the computers. We still have human referees reviewing stuff, but once the machines take over completely, just understanding the calls will require a lot of thinking.

In the end, though, chances are they will be correct.

    This game is schizo.

Mexico continues to pile on and pile on and pile on pressure without really forcing the keeper to make a difficult save. How many shots and crosses have the Saudi's blocked?

    Saudi's bending, but not breaking.

Would Chicharito really not be of use for Mex?

You would think they could use a threat in the box.

Pretty much, its kind of like NBA purists who scoff at the NCAA Tournament compared to the NBA Playoffs, but the rest of us watching find the NBA Playoffs a bore, and the NCAA tournament thrilling, w/more than a thousand players hopes and dreams riding on every minute, knowing if they go out, their basketball dream is dead, for good. It just carries so much more weight, and has so much more volatility, the passion is so much greater w/the random exception w/a player like Jordan.

The World Cup feels like NCAA Tourney on roids because of the nationalist angle. It's so much more enjoyable than this giant franchise with gobs of money vs that giant franchise with gobs of money.

Senegal partying in the street yesterday, us consoling devastated Iranian players yesterday, it just means far, far, far more. It just does.

There are some handful of countries, generally European, where it doesn't seem to matter as much as club but those are the rare exceptions.

I like that Landon Donovan just mentioned that Saudi Arabia has to get a goal too.
At some point its gonna have to open up. So far they've just been in survival mode.

This is such an entertaining match for a neutral as it is.
    The crowd is insane.

Shit, this Mexico side would be better with Jared Borgetti starting. They (like us . . .) are in dire need of someone who can consistently score. The rest of their product is pretty good.

Still, they are dominating the game- they should get their goal and go through to the next round.

Its tempting to say he needs his "Pulisic moment," but he's already had it.

Mexico should have been begging.......BEGGING Vela and Chicha for the past four years to get back in the program. They would have been a much scarier and might have done some damage. Whot tf even are Mexico's forwards this cycle. I couldnt name one besides Jiminez
