This one could be very interesting as a Poland draw might send Argentina home provide Saudi Arabia defeat Mexico.
I can very much see Saudi Arabia defeating Mexico and I can very much see Poland drawing/winning Argentina.
Man this is absolute BS. The header goes a mile wide but because the keepers hand touched the face after it, it’s a penalty BALL DONT LIE
For what it's worth, that's not a clear and obvious penalty for me. But once Makkelie is at the monitor, how on earth does he turn it away given the actors on-field and precedent to date with VAR?
No way. There is no way that is enough contact for a penalty kick. I get if he cleans him out after or if he attempts to punch the ball and then hits him with punch/closed fist. That's a careless challenge by the goal keeper. It has to rise to a degree of reckless to justify a PK. That's just the reality.
I think you see something like it called regularly now. And that's a good thing. Because it's taken awhile to get there. But just not quite that.
This is right for me. Or at least for it to rise to a VAR penalty kick. I cannot believe that was sent down. That was never getting sent down in UCL or at EURO.
Pre-VAR, it's obviously a goal kick. Keeper grazes his head and Messi goes down holding his eyes. Justice prevails as the PK is saved.
I just don't know what the two of the most experienced people on the planet with VAR just saw there. Truly shocking. This is a tournament where the red card has become extinct, yet we are giving penalties for this?
I hate that contact that is routinely seen and ignored by officials now pretty much has to be called when VAR sends it down. ITOOTR is all but gone.
If we're going to criticize Faghani for not rejecting the penalty in his game (which many, including myself, did), I don't think we can make excuses for Makkelie. If he doesn't want a penalty there, he shouldn't give it.
I think this is way worse from a philosophical and practical level. If a professional referee think this is level of contact rises to a penalty kick on replay, then essentially any contact with an attacker after he gets a shot off is a foul. If this was done in MLS, the VAR and referee are being removed form assignments.
