I seem to remember Mexico putting 5 or 6 past us in one of the Gold Cups. At the old Giants stadium.

Or go the opposite way and do what hockey does.....if any part of the body is onside, the player is onside. I think that would make it even more interesting as you will see attackers dragging the back legs to stay on.

Only team to score on England in the group stage. Played well. I dont want the team or the fans punished, but damn it, can't we topple that damn government already and have the people elect who they want, be it conservatives, centrists or liberals? Such a great historical culture and people, and to be run by such backward, disgusting, violent, thuggish, intellectual eunuch's. A country and culture with a heritage that predates Muhammad by thousands of years. So frustrating that people continue to be trampled and continue to die for those theocratic monsters (and though it may offend some, I'm fully cognizant of the fact that we have our own theocratic monsters too, and that they've already infected the judicial branch of our government with their irredeemable bull---- and our looking for more of the government to spread their poison into. The fact that they don't see themselves in the Ayatollah and his minions is beyond me.).

Okay, back on topic. I will say that I found it odd, and unfair to the players how some people reacted, these are just people playing soccer, simple as that. The regime may want to warp them into monsters of the religious state, but in truth, they're just people trying to live their dream like anyone, and it was just crushed, I wouldn't celebrate that, they aren't the theocrats. They fought for their teammates, for eachother, and for the people, the government, are just leeches trying to indulge in the soccer equivalent of stolen valor, pretending they had anything at all to do with the players accomplishments.

First, the current Law 11 doesn't say anything close to "influencing play."

Second, it has never been an offense simply to be in an OS position. (It is true that the modern interpretations have narrowed what counts to complete an OS offense, but it has always taken more than just OSP.)

A player in OSP at the time a teammate touches the ball is penalized if he interferes with play (which is defined as touching the ball), interferers with an opponent (in one of 4 specific ways), or "gains an advantage" (which is stupid language for historical reasons that really means doing one of the first two things after the ball rebounds from the goal frame or an opponent).

Google IFAB Laws of the game, and you can look at it in Law 11. (And there is more in the way of explanation in guidance at the end of the magic book.)

The irony is that a defensive, conservative system can absolutely win a World Cup with the right level of talent.

Didier Deschamps played an extremely conservative lineup and tactical plan in 2018 that was constantly criticized by French fans for not being aggressive enough, not letting their players play.

And they won the Cup. Jill Eliis got a lot of similar crap for her tactical plan with the US Women's team.

That said, it'd be absolutely ludicrous to try and play like a team with the talent to win a World Cup when, as you note, we don't have anywhere close to it.

The hardest part of the game is defending. It requires focus, selflessness, and strength. There's a reason why defensive players take longer to hit their peak, experience matters a lot for them.

Adams has played like a 30 year old in the body of a 23 year old. Remarkable.

Thanks for that educational guidance. I don't pretend to be a well-versed student of the laws.

However, I've been watching footy for many years and I have clear memories from decades ago, of players in OSP being called for OS, even if they're far from the play and questionably in maybe only a very marginal position to "gain advantage".

And in more recent years I've seen the opposite, which is what bugs me. Players who are in the 18 (sometimes in the 6) who are in OSP but deemed to not be interfering or gaining advantage (BTW this is what I meant by "influencing play") even though that judgment is VERY subjective, e.g. how the hell does the HR know if the GK was distracted by, or changed his reaction, due to a player close by?

I don't really want to hijack this thread into one about Rule 11. But I will just say that my previous sentiment hasn't changed: I think the offside law/interpretation is very ripe for revision.

I will leave it at that.

Your argument keeps changing. Your initial argument on Berhalter is that this team isn't performing to its level of talent. So what is it? Does the talent level of the team matter in evaluating a coach?

As for Top 10, we've played one Top 10 team in a competitive match in the Berhalter era and tied them in the World Cup. We've played Uruguay twice, I think, tying both, though I don't think they are Top 10.

Sampson beat Argentina, Bradley beat Spain, Arena beat Portugal (who I don't know if they were close to Top 10). So are they all good?

You have a moving target for what a good coach is, and you just basically blame everything on the coach and think everyone who simply plays in Europe is awesome.

Can't wait for your lineup with Ben Lederman.

Let’s be honest, these past 3 games have been the best 2 first halves and 1 complete game during Gregs tenure. We literally had to 1-0 our way through concacaf competitions. If you think 3 games is enough to say this guy needs to stay then you are apart of what’s wrong with US soccer and that’s a weak mentality. Maybe it took 3 and a half years for the boys to get the tactics down or maybe it’s the world stage and players are stepping up. We can out possess teams so some view that as a win in itself. No plan B plus not having to mental fortitude to kill off games like the last 20 minutes against Iran and the last free kick against England. The difference is posters expressing their gripes with GGG vs posters being mad at those expressing views different from their own. The herd mentality that’s being pushed in this forum is nauseating.

Kerr is like a 9 time NBA champion or something. You're some dude behind a keyboard that doesn't even seem to understand the sport he's talking about.

You've just told me talent doesn't matter in evaluating coaching.

Appreciate your response, disagree about the particulars, but if that's your read on players, than it is sound. I just think Scally is clearly better than the other two RB options, period, not arguing he's elite, but he's a legit solid option who can play with these guys, no problem. Moore clearly was not, Yedlin is very, very up and down, with a low ceiling and only moderately high floor, so I wouldn't have wanted him either. If LDLT is so hurt he can't be the 8 anytime Musah or McKennie are subbed off, he shouldn't have been on the roster, and we should've used other options, even Roldan, who I wouldn't have taken either, or a Tillman who I would've and plenty of others.

To me the subs came on w/better timing this match, but for the third straight match I generally disagreed w/a working majority of them. You may be right that it wasn't enough, probably wasn't, but it was better than what we did have, which was a traffic cone in Moore, and a general surrender of possession at every level of the field. We need a different second half approach in terms of how to boss the game out if we're winning and to find a goal if we're losing, because this won't work against the path likely to unfold before us:
    R16: Netherlands
QF: Argentina if they win today
    SF: Brazil

I'd like to be more ambitious, than simply doing a Gandalf impression when faced with the Balrog. Looks great in movies, but will get you killed if you're playing the Dutch, Argentina or the winner of that Spain vs Brazil match. I don't expect us to be on the level of 3 or 4 of those teams, but I'd really like to have a fighting chance, and we won't if we try that again.

They shouldn't get personal, but the guy you are quoting there, in the post you are quoting, literally tells the person he is quoting to "f off" - which is quite personal.

The person you quote also lumps everyone who disagrees with him into the category of berhalter lovers. Doesn't seem fair and balanced.

    Life is simple.

Berhalter, so far, has done a good job.

It doesn't mean he will keep doing a good job.

    It doesn't mean he's a great manager.

It doesn't mean we wouldn't win the World Cup if we had Tata Martino.

It doesn't mean Putin is paying me to type this.

If only means that, so far, Berhalter has done a good job.

This is just amazing to watch from the outside.

"Hey, all of our players have technical issues in the final third, especially at the end of World Cup games after 3 in 8 days."

"Could I be wrong about their talent level, even though everyone I named is not goal productive at their club level and commonly exhibits these issues at club?"

"No! The coach must be telling them to commit heavy touches and make technical mistakes!"

If there's a research psychologist on here, there's a study for you.

The saddest thing about this is Moore is fine. He was fine at the Gold Cup in '21, he was less fine in window 2 of qualifying, but he's "okay". The problem is, he and Yedlin for that matter, are not at Scally or Dest's level and not close, and the only reason I believe they're seeing minutes is that Berhalter lacks a comfort level with Scally's reps in the system. He's seen Yedlin at a billion trainings, and loads of starts and sub on's, he started Moore in much of the Gold Cup and for a horrible game against Panama in the fall and a much better one in March, so he's seen him start around 8 matches in the last 15 months, subbed him a bunch too. Scally's got 1 camp w/no minutes in qualifying, a rough run out against powerhouse sides in June, and then a brief run out where he was good in the disastrous september friendlies. He just doesn't have the reps to trust him despite the patently obvious fact that Scally is better. This aint Moore's fault, but at this point even Dempsey is making fun of Berhalter's choice. It is ridiculous. Moore is being put in bad positions, playing ahead of a player he shouldn't, being called in when he shouldn't have been, and it sucks. Guy was fine at the gold cup, won us the game against Canada, less fine (okay horrid, on the road in Panama) but bounced back in window 5. He's perfectly adequate, but we're playing England at the World Cup, do or die against Ireland, and you've got a guy whose played and shined against teams like Bayern Munich, Dortmund, RBL, and the like. I don't know? Maybe, use him?!?!

The good thing about a bone contusion in a place like the pelvis is there is little risk of increasing the severity of injury. It's not like a sprained ligament. It is unlikely to get worse by playing with it.

It's more dealing with pain and inflammation. Well he's gonna have a team of doctors working on reducing the inflammation around the clock and increasing blood flow.

I would say it's very likely Puli starts on Sat. How long it takes a bone bruise to heal doesn't really matter here. As that's not the threshold to being able to play with this injury. It's more reducing the inflammation and not losing mobility. Especially when it's not on his ankle/knee where he'd be far more likely to get it hit repeatedly. Another shot at his pelvis is pretty unlikely.

    We only bunkered at 82'+stoppage.

Why are people acting like this was a full game gameplan? We didn't even bunker in the second half. The loss of Pulisic, changes in Iranian aggression, and then fatigue slowly shifted the game.

Furthermore, we weren't playing any of those teams. I have no idea why people think the gameplan and choices aren't made in the context of the actual game.

Moore + Wright are put there as a sort of final weapon: they have a 10% chance of firing, but if they do, it can be devastating. Moore can cross a ball better than anyone in our pool, but he needs time, space, the right wind, and for it to be a Sunday the 17th so it can happen. Haji can score from a cross, rising up for the occasion.

If this were a movie, those two would score the winning goal against the Dutch in the 89'. But since it's not, I already jinxed it happening by mentioning it here.

You should probably stop watching then. Our talent is nowhere near Brazil's cup-winning teams or the current one. There's not a coach in the world who would make us favorites to win the cup.
