Was watching highlights of different games of that quarter finals and notice they are using different game time format. One going counting down and the other counting up to 90 mins.
At ND, they bossed us. In the ACCT, it was more evenly played, but I did not feel we were definitely stronger, just evenly matched. UNC and FSU will always be a dogfight. A fortunate or bad bounce here or there will likely determine the outcome. Given the rash of injuries UNC has had to endure, I'm amazed they are here with a legit chance to win another natty!
The UCLA games right? I think that's a west coast thing. I'm not sure of the rules on it but the host chooses how the clock runs.
Really folks? Official time in college soccer is the scoreboard clock so that timekeeper needs to pay attention and obey the referee signals carefully. There is also a "1 minute" announcement required and a audible countdown the last 10 seconds of each period, and the horn sounding on "zero" ends the game (unless there isn't one). It can count up or down but most count down as they are programmed that way by default (as are US fans generally). Rule book quote below - I've always preferred the count up to 90 method. Not for any 'traditional' reason but so that it then matches the scorebook log and the video counter on playback. Not that this is another silly rules thing that is debated ad nauseam by coaches and US officials. The clock may count up or down; however, it is recommended that it count down.
Just wondering if the countdown time clock stops when a player is injured. Don’t pay attention to that but feel like they do stop. Since there is no additional injury time.
Ok, it’s a week until the CC and the Heels are in! For fun, where does UNC rank among teams in the seasons since the last title in 2012? Clearly FSU and Stanford are the top 2, but where do other teams rank? Count everything up to right now with no assumptions about what happens next weekend. Describe your methods. My guess based on close to nothing is UNC would be #4.
Not sure your question? you mean ranking UNC teams over the years or this year's final 4 teams? I do not pretend to be a hardcore fan enough to have that 10 years sorted at all. But for this year, UNC has losses to 2 of the Final4 teams and is the only #2 seed. I'm sure this will be mentioned in the run up to make UNC seem like the underdog but they are not. They could likely play both of those teams in order to win it though. Revenge factor is big and an easy button to push. Bama is clearly the longest shot at this point as they are the only team truly breaking new ground as a program. I love underdogs but don't like the SEC much since they have ruined college sports with their greed over football money and don't even support men's soccer but... UNC wins with an OT Goal over UCLA. (but a rookie coach at UCLA winning over UNC would be quite a story....)
Ha, ha: Don't be naive: the ACC would LOVE to have the SEC's football money, if they could get it. The league isn't strong enough in football to get it. The whole American/global sports-entertainment system, centered on TV and streaming, is bloated and greedy--college, pros, every sport, all of it.
Looking only at NCAA Tournament results, with numbers going back to 2010 (rather than your 2012), here is my scoring system (the points accumulate from one round to round): In the tournament: 1 In the second round: 2 In the round of 16: 3 In the quarterfinals: 4 In the semifinals: 5 In the finals: 6 Champion: 7 Here are the results: FloridaState 200 Stanford 175 NorthCarolinaU 149 Duke 128 UCLA 128 VirginiaU 121 PennState 112 SantaClara 93 TexasA&M 74 NotreDame 72 SouthernCalifornia 72 SouthCarolinaU 71 WestVirginiaU 66 Georgetown 65 BYU 61 FloridaU 56 Rutgers 53 ArkansasU 42 VirginiaTech 42 MichiganU 40 OhioState 40 WakeForest 39 WashingtonState 38 BostonCollege 36 Clemson 36 OklahomaState 35 WisconsinU 34 Baylor 33 Auburn 31 TexasTech 28 NCState 27 UCF 27 WashingtonU 27 MississippiU 24 TennesseeU 24 Pepperdine 23 TCU 22 SouthFlorida 21 CaliforniaU 20 Princeton 20 ColoradoU 19 ArizonaU 18 Marquette 18 Hofstra 17 MinnesotaU 16 KentuckyU 15 LongBeachState 15 MarylandU 15 PortlandU 15 BostonU 14 KansasU 14 Milwaukee 14 NorthwesternU 14 TexasU 14 ConnecticutU 13 IllinoisU 13 Louisville 13 Denver 12 SouthAlabama 12 UCIrvine 12 Vanderbilt 12 IllinoisState 11 Memphis 11 CentralConnecticut 10 Seattle 10 StJohns 10 Dayton 9 SanDiegoState 9 ArizonaState 8 FloridaGulfCoast 8 Monmouth 8 Rice 8 SanDiegoU 8 SIUEdwardsville 8 StLouis 8 UtahU 8 CalStateFullerton 7 Harvard 7 LoyolaMarymount 7 MissouriU 7 SouthDakotaState 7 LSU 6 MiamiFL 6 NebraskaU 6 NewMexicoU 6 OregonState 6 Samford 6 AlabamaU 5 Butler 5 IowaU 5 LaSalle 5 Lipscomb 5 NorthTexas 5 Oakland 5 OklahomaU 5 UtahValley 5 BowlingGreen 4 Brown 4 ColoradoCollege 4 GeorgiaU 4 HighPoint 4 JamesMadison 4 Liberty 4 LoyolaChicago 4 MontanaU 4 Northeastern 4 Radford 4 SMU 4 StFrancis 4 StonyBrook 4 WesternMichigan 4 William&Mary 4 Xavier 4 AlabamaState 3 Albany 3 Bucknell 3 Furman 3 IndianaU 3 MiamiOH 3 MissouriState 3 MurrayState 3 NorthDakotaState 3 PrairieViewA&M 3 Purdue 3 SELouisiana 3 Siena 3 UNCGreensboro 3 UNCWilmington 3 CentralMichigan 2 DePaul 2 EasternWashington 2 HoustonBaptist 2 Howard 2 JacksonState 2 Lamar 2 LongIsland 2 Mercer 2 Morehead 2 Navy 2 NorthernColorado 2 SanJoseState 2 TennesseeMartin 2 Toledo 2 UtahState 2 AbileneChristian 1 ArkansasPineBluff 1 Army 1 Belmont 1 BoiseState 1 Buffalo 1 CalStateNorthridge 1 Campbell 1 Charlotte 1 Cincinnati 1 Colgate 1 Creighton 1 Duquesne 1 Elon 1 Evansville 1 FairleighDickinson 1 FIU 1 FresnoState 1 GeorgiaSouthern 1 GrandCanyon 1 IdahoState 1 IUPUI 1 JacksonvilleU 1 KentState 1 Lehigh 1 Marist 1 MiddleTennessee 1 MississippiState 1 MississippiValley 1 NewHampshireU 1 NorthernArizona 1 NorthernKentucky 1 NorthwesternState 1 OldDominion 1 PennsylvaniaU 1 Providence 1 Rider 1 SacramentoState 1 StephenFAustin 1 TexasState 1 UALR 1 UMBC 1 UNLV 1 UTSA 1 Valparaiso 1 VermontU 1 WeberState 1
I always found this part about these kind of arguments weird ... 10 is a solid round number and it doesn't have to have anything to do with it being 10 years being the last time UNC won a championship. Why go back 12 years? Why not 14? 16? What is the motivation of 12? Are you using the last time that UNC won back to back championships as a "break" on purpose or ...? Perhaps it's some belief that everything that happened before 2010 doesn't count because UNC dominated the sport and the field wasn't as competitive? What was the metric of when things became competitive? Who is to say that UNC didn't win in 2008 and 2009 or in any of the 2000's championships in a field that was just as competitive as the 2010's and 2020's?
UNC's social media team just posted a link to buy tickets for a game that was already sold out. Apparently it sold out before any team even knew if they were going to be in the College Cup.
TICKETS!!!!???? OK... who is in the know about getting tickets to the semi finals on Friday evening?? I have gone on line to the NCAA ticket office and there is no mention at all about Friday evening...not even a note about being sold out or when the tickets will be on sale. (All that is listed is the championship game on Monday evening.) So I called the NCAA ticket office and there was confusion at first as the operator didn't see any for Friday either and then after a pause, she told me that all of the Friday tickets were sold out by last week, but that there may be some available later in this week as some might turned back. (And another note, when logging into the NCAA website, they prominently post a "promo code" and recommend that it is used when purchasing tickets. I did so, and the price went from $20.00 to $10.00 for the Championship game.) So what's the deal? Have the scalpers grabbed up all of the tickets??
so yea I was waiting with notifications on for when UNC posted on twitter so I wouldn't miss or be late to the ticket announcement. I went right away to try and buy them and Friday's game were not available. Tried logging in and the whole event gave me the "Access is Denied" ... though I think that's a seperate issue. I asked the UNC account if tickets for Friday's game are sold out and they responded right away and said tickets were still available. I would be shocked if the NCAA allowed the event to become sold out before anybody even knew what teams were going and the teams themselves had a chance to post ticket links for the event. I think there's something going on here and we'll just have to keep trying until they sort it out.
NCAA had an early sale of tickets, back in September I think, for those on their mailing list, mostly I would think people who had bought tickets in previous years. Would be surprised that that resulted in a sell-out, however. Large groups of girl soccer teams are brought to the games -- in connection with a tournament in Raleigh? -- each year, seems like that is were majority of tickets go. Would guess that those are bought in bulk and at a discount as part of some arrangement with the NCAA.
I have no nefarious agenda. I set up the workbook that I used for this in 2019 and at that time wanted to include 10 years, which is why it starts with year 2010. I simply updated through 2021 in response to the post, which is why my current numbers cover 12 years. If 10 years are really important, I can come up with those numbers too.
UNC has deleted its twitter link for tickets as they seemed as surprised as we are that there are no tickets for the semi final. Seems like the semi-finals did in fact sell out even before the big eight games that decided who was going to be playing. That's ... broken.
So your counter to disdain for the SEC is "everyone's greedy"?? At least the ACC has a strong tradition of supporting soccer. As much as any p5 conference could have. Thankfully, in the current environment, the P5/Flagship schools Do have money and Do have to spend it on women's soccer. But I've always thought the SEC and Big12 are worse without men's soccer. The Bama story might be a good one this year, but can't root for them.
Clarification- rank all teams over the past 10 years since the last UNC title in 2012. Not just college cup teams this year. All teams.
I was curious because even though UNC has not won a title in since 2012, they’ve still been really strong. So, I wondered how they rank in the 10 years since their last title in 2012, including this season so far.
The last time I was as impressed about UNC holding a team scoreless was Stanford 2019 final. ND had so many chances. Not a PK , right?
No PKs in last night's game. The Golden Goal method for deciding games with even scores after 90 minutes was tossed last summer when the NCAA decided to eliminate all overtimes in regularly scheduled season games. For determining which team gets to advance in tournaments, the NCAA decided to go with 2 ten minute extra periods and which ever team was ahead in the score after those 20 minutes would advance. If still tied, then the well known "shots from the spot" would be used to decide who gets to advance. The NCAA rules also say that the games ending in shots from the spot are not to be recorded by identifying a winner and loser but are recorded for posterity as a draw. The single exception to this rule is that only in the national championship game decided by shots from the spot following two overtimes, the score is recorded as a tie but the team which was successful from the spot is named the winner and can put the "W" by the tie score and the other team gets to put a "L" by the tie score in its records. (This is what happened in 2019 with Stanford/UNC.)
