I would say this if she hadn't scored today. One of the goals was pretty nice too. It definitely doesn't make up for all her wasted opportunities the past few years. She's been decent everywhere but in front of goal today.(Edit: by today I mean in the first half.)
I had to delete that post because I felt it was unfair to her after she scored twice. Maybe she is finally coming around; or it is a coincident. Next games will tell.
By the way, does anyone know about the almost-white player in Nigeria's team? Is she some American of Nigerian descent?
F.T....International friendly Japan 2 Nigeria 0....(Tanaka 2) My player of the match (for what its worth).....Hina Sugita...hard work...skill...lot of hard running to gain position and great attitude
And she won the PK to boot! I didn't watch enough of the game to judge, but just based on Sugita's usual quality I suppose she's a fair choice of MVP.
Agreed. She’s the only international player that played the full game too I think. Just 2 nights after her flight. I was scared she’d get injured.
Do you have a name. While there are at least three American born players on the team, they are not of light complexion. I had no time to go through all of them.
As I repeatedly said, I wasn't really watching the game and listening to the comment all time: I was busy with some work commitments and I only noticed that there was a player on the pitch (a DF, I seem to remember, from the part of the picth where I was seeing her most often) that looked quite different from your typical Nigerian player, but I didn't follow the game close enough to tell more.
I think all 4 “newer” players under Ikeda (Seike, Inoue, Hamano, Fujino) played well today. They were very enthusiastic if anything. Maybe Hamano was a bit too energetic. A few moments of play where I think her feet moved before she had an idea of what she wanted to do.
It might have been Ashley Plumtre from England. She has a Nigerian grandfather, played for England and now for Nigeria (since February) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashleigh_Plumptre Quite impressive resume, actually.

Hamano on the verge of tears for her post match interview. Not her best game but not bad enough to cry about…this interview almost made me cry she denies she’s crying though. What a promising player. 18-year-old Maika Hamano a little emotional after making her Nadeshiko Japan debut."I was a little nervous ... I want to train hard and become better. I want to become a forward who will turn her chances into results." pic.twitter.com/v8emehHGJh— Dan Orlowitz (@aishiterutokyo) October 6, 2022
Watching the replays...I'm not sure if the second goal was a penalty. Sugita really sold it with the way she fell down but I don't see enough contact. Maybe a bit of a hand on her shoulder. In the 2019 world cup the pen would've been given but I wonder how the regulations have changed. Definitely not a yellow card though.
That was an incredibly soft penalty and she looked like she was offside. In the WE League I doubt that would have been given. The Tanaka goal was nice. I have not watched the game yet, so I will have to see tomorrow how bad the finishing was from Nadeshiko.
Yes, I seem to recognize her from the Wikipedia's picture. If she's Nigerian by her paternal grandfather only, no surprise that she looks less "Nigerian" than her team-mates.
Poor thing! She just has to be proud to have debuted in Senior National Team so early: these are not the days when a player could debut even way younger than that, like Sawa; having made the Senior Team already makes Maika special and I hope she realizes that!
Interesting perspective from the Nigerian side in these highlights. In some scenes it looks like Nadeshiko has learned to play less clean than we are used to.

I have watched this guys videos before and he is pretty fair. I agree with him with the foul that led to the goal. I do not know how Sugita got the free. The penalty was soft, but the defender has to do better. Also the ref has to do better. I do not like it when forwards start looking for contact as opposed to just playing the ball. Anyway, I watched the game and it was a mediocre performance by Nadeshiko. The only highlight was that they were only troubled defensively for about five minutes at the end of the first half. I thought they defended well. But you know it is against the 46th ranked team in the world. The back three works given that he will play a back five against the better teams with possibly four in midfield. Kumagai since moving to Bayern has looked much better for Nadeshiko. I do not know why, but she is playing better. The midfield was fine with Nagano and Naomoto. Naomoto for me was the best on ground making the key pass to put Tanaka through and linking up quite well with defence and attack. Nagano was okay, but she was better than Hayashi who replaced her. Hayashi did not seem to do a lot. I imagine he will persist with her. Obviously Sugita was good too. Where you play Sugita is a tricky one because she is good almost anywhere, but on the left makes sense because she can track back and help out whoever is playing at wing back. Shimizu had a shocker and he was right to have her replaced. I like the idea of Seike coming on late in games. Miyazawa was solid but I hope we can see a bit more link up with Shimizu. And Tanaka was good despite the miss early in the game. If she scores that chance the game probably would have been very different. But her shot was composed and I could see what she was trying to do, but she just mistimed her shot. There was quite a bit of back passing in the first half. I imagine he wanted them to only move forward if there was numbers in attack. I get this due to wanting to keep possession but fast teams can put your own defence under pressure. The good run of play in extra time of the first half from Nigeria was a result of some good pressure that created mistakes from Nadeshiko's defence. The thing is though, it started from a back pass from Sugita on the half-way line to Kitamura. I do not know why Sugita in a lot of space did not go for a gallop with the ball. I am probably being a little too negative, because Nadeshiko did create some opportunities to score and perhaps with better touches would have resulted in a few more goals. Part of me worries when Nadeshiko cannot score from open play, but under Ikeda with Naomoto taking free-kicks they look a lot more dangerous from dead balls.
