I'm pretty sure I'll be enrolling within the next couple weeks. What's the neighborhood like (W 103rd St)? Who here, and in general, lives there? What are some noteworthy things to see close to the school (particularly food related)? Add in anything else you have to say. Thanks!
Irish neighborhood. Best food is Chi tungs, the best Chinese, Korean, or sushi place. Kegans pub on 106th and western for pints and music. Decent Mexican places close by. Other than that it is a wilderness.
Perhaps overstated. Depends on your tastes and politics. The Beverly neighborhood, close by, has coffee shops and a Boarders Bookstore but there is a lack of cultural venues, music, ethnic food. On the bright side you will be close to the new Fire stadium and the school itself is fine. Best of luck
The area is surrounded on three sides by suburbs & doesn't really have a lot to offer other than it's a real nice place to raise up your kids. You might try the place across 99th St. from Murtaugh's favorite high school, I think it's called Wojo's. I've never been there, but they serve a lot of exotic things like bronto burgers & such. Some of the locals can fill you in about Wojo's a little more.
I live only a few minutes from St. Xavier... in the aforementioned Beverly neighborhood. I think there's a lot more to it than people think... though it _is_ a great place to raise a kid. This area really is the last point south and west that you can actually call the city. However, you ARE in the city... and if you can't find it in your own neighborhood, there is public transportation that can get you anywhere. Is it as good as DC's? No... but it'll get you there. I don't actually know what you're into... but you're not going to be far from downtown. It takes me about 15 minutes to get to the loop on the weekends. There's so much around though. You're really quite close to Hyde Park. There's the Beverly Arts Center nearby (111th and Western). Chi Tung is supposed to have very good food, but there's always a wait. I'll have to try it eventually. What are you into? I know the neighborhood you're going to be in pretty well. Reply or PM... up to you. P.S. Ever do any babysitting? Hehe. College students always need money! I want to go to the movies again!!!!!!!
I was a Hall Director there in grad school. It was ok, but it didn't really have that liberal arts feel. Take it with agrain of salt though as I was a grad student at the time. It's still a great campus to live on, althouh they did can me for being too lenient, so if the place seems too strict its not my fault
Sent you the list but I'll post it here for others as well. The more comments from others, the better. -soccer (not a problem with the new stadium) -Any sort of art is appreciated (the normal painting, sculpture, etc stuff along with dance, theater, orchestras, etc) I'll go watch/see just about anything -The aforementioned interest in food (my favorite restaurants here are a source of comfort for me, esp. my favorite Italian place and Eli's with my New York pizza). I know I'll be deprived of the pizza I've grown up with but there's a new kind to try and I'm sure there's tiramisu somewhere. -I need to be in the sun quite a bit or I'll go insane. Parks are nice, all we really have is the beach which isn't quite the same thing as a park but I'll take what I can get. (don't try to tell me that you guys have a beach b/c we all know it isn't really the right kind for me ) -A place with real sweet tea. This is a big one since I won't be able to do my sun tea thing in the middle of winter. -Shopping isn't a big issue with me b/c I don't really enjoy it most of the time. Bookstores are a big deal esp. ones that aren't chain bookstores. I have two little sisters and a bunch of cousins. I babysit nowhere near as much as before but I love kids and will be willing to babysit for the BigSoccer family.
Well, you'll be able to take public transportation to the city, so you'll be able to do basically anything. If you like theatre, you'll love Chicago as we have one of the best local theatre scenes in the world. Everything from Steppenwolf to Second City, for what ever mood you're in. If you're into independent films and such, I can give you some of my favorite places. Also, the food is second to none, seriously. It seems like every other store front in the city is a restaurant, which partially explains why Chicago is one of the fatter cities in America. About the beach, well, who cares when the lake front is as beautiful as it is.
HISS. At least it's not Winnetka. it's near the new stadium, and my best friend lives a few blocks away. Downtown sure isn't far. You're all good. As far as tea I have some suggestions but they might have to wait till you actually get to town. Oh, and a condition of you moving here is declaring your support and undying devotion for the Fire. of course.
The school has done a lot of expansion. The immediate neighborhood is the far southwestern edge of Chicago, made up of many city workers. Western Avenue in the Beverly avenue offers a lot of eating and drinking establishments, Oak Lawn, the Town immediately to the west is a first ring suburb and extensive commercial areas. They have been putting a lot of money into their 95th street district. Your only a few miles from Midway airport. The school has a very good NAIA sports programs, the Football team is very good, the soccer program on the rebound. Immediately adjacent are Brother Rice and McAuley HS. The largest all boy and all girl HS in the state. Wojo's at the corner of 99th and Pulaski is an interesting burger/dog joint. Some of the pest Pizza is at Barraco's on 95th Street in Evergreen Park and Palermos at 95th just west of Cicero. A little further to the south and west in to the Palos Area has extensive forest preserves.
Good lord, I haven't posted in forever. But I felt moved to do so. I remember playing the women's soccer team in college. Complete bitches who's defense was kicking at our heels and breaking ribs. Ugh. I hated that team. But.................have a great time! Just stay away from the field and you should be safe.
This I can probably do. I should clarify and say that I'll be there in I guess late August/very early September since no one starts school until after Labor Day.
100th and Western is Fox's Pizza. Best pizza in town. Chicken, shrimp, beef sandwiches all good. As someone stated Western is the mecca of the corner bar. They have all kinds.
It will be difficult for this area to compete with FLA in the beach dept - but, don't be so hasty as to dismiss the prospect. Once the weather turns - and I mean summer, not spring - we get glorious days with moderate heat and no humidity. Plus, the breeze coming off the lake acts like natural air-conditioning - very pleasant. Now - about beaches - being on the southside you will have a good jumping off point to go south around the lake and into Michigan. Make the drive in the morning before the traffic builds and you can be in New Buffalo or Union Pier in an hour. There you find broad sandy beaches with beautiful swimming areas - dunes for hiking - fresh water, no salt. Quaint little towns with gallaries and antique shops (not my bag, not that there's anything wrong with that...) Anyway - take friends and it's a nice day. Peak season, July through September - but after the long winter, it looks pretty good on a sunny day in May/June.
You love the sun and you're moving to Chicago? In summer you might see that yellow orb but it will be tough to find in the winter.Welcome and good luck.
I dunno. I have been getting mine from Milano's at 109th and Western. I've been very impressed. Really, really good and not skimpy on topics. Someone recommended a place called Rosangela's on 95th. I tried it and didn't like it at all. But Milano's... wow.
Giggio's on Clark Street in Evanston. Nothing special about the pizza, but it's the best ever (besides deep dish spinach pizza at Giordano's). Anyone here from Evanston? Seems so close to most Chicago fans, but still no one seems to be from there or ever go there. Cool town, I live right by there.
I went to Buffalo Joe's all the time in high school. Clarke's too. Still go up there for movies occasionally. Oh, my 21st birthday was also in Evanston. no comment.
