How does it all work? There will be 53 teams drawn into 10 groups: seven groups of five teams (Groups A-G) and three groups of six teams (Groups H-J) with the six seeding pots having already been confirmed after the recent UEFA Nations League phase. Teams play each other home and away in a round-robin system. The qualifiers will take place from March to November 2023, with the top two in each of the 10 groups progressing to the finals in June and July 2024. Meanwhile, the three remaining spots will be completed with the teams that qualify through the play-offs in March 2024. Who are the hosts? Germany, the team of the EURO 2024 host association, qualify automatically for the final tournament and are therefore not taking part in the qualifying draw. Who is seeded in what pot? UEFA Nations League pot (4):Netherlands*, Croatia*, Italy*, Spain* Pot 1 (6): Denmark, Portugal, Belgium, Hungary, Switzerland, Poland Pot 2 (10): France, Austria, Czech Republic, England, Wales, Israel*, Bosnia and Herzegovina*, Serbia*, Scotland*, Finland. Been a good long time since we were in the second pot. All the better motivation to have a better NL campaign next time.
We in Group C which means England and Italy again. And also Ukraine and Notrh Macedonia who who are good teams. At least both Malta matches should be winnable. I have a bad feeling we not going to make the Euro’s no matter who the manager is - it’s a bit of a nightmare draw. If Southgate goes his successor could be the next McLaren out after one qualifying group ( Particularly as the recruitment process feels like that era as well.) At least by drawing Ukraine we can’t get Belarus where a report the other week suggested we were going to forfit any games against them in protest at them not being banned. Some of those groups are way easier than others. A couple only have 1 team from the last euros others have four.
Group A: Spain, Scotland, Norway, Georgia, Cyprus Group B: Netherlands, France, Republic of Ireland, Greece, Gibraltar Group C: Italy, England, Ukraine, North Macedonia, Malta Group D: Croatia, Wales, Armenia, Turkey, Latvia Group E: Poland, Czech Rep, Albania, Faroe Islands, Moldova Group F: Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Estonia
Some of those groups are rough enough that even if we finish third we might not get a Play off place.
I am amazed at how negative you can be at future events. Creating negative scenarios on top of things to make situations look worse. Its just absurd and really feels like trolling for reactions.
Well it’s possible. Italy will likely win it but Matches against Ukraine and North Macedonia are risky but will always be winnable.
I just have a bad feeling. Ukraine and North Macedonia were both only one match away from the World Cup.
But when have you ever not? Another way to look at it is England are the only team in the group to even have qualified for the world cup.
I wonder how the Italians feel about group. North Macedonia knocked them out the world cup and we're rated higher then them.
Whilst Italy obviously deserve respect given their record against us, I do think we need to stop approaching games against them with such a negative mentality. All of the last 3 games against them were exceptionally close even though we were below par in all of them. They are still a solid side obviously but they are not world beaters and have no real superstars. Even their best feature, the defence, is suffering a vacuum in quality, leadership and experience with the loss of Chiellini. I repeat that we obviously need to respect them given our record against them, particularly in the last decade, is woeful. However, I think that’s as much down to us as it is them. We should definitely be aiming to beat them at home. The players, and Southgate if he is still here, should surely be hungry for it as well given the heartache we’ve suffered at their hands in recent years.
Probably a bit concerned. Their form is inconsistent at the moment. But as a result of winning the Nations League group they are assured of a playoff place not matter what. We have a decent chance of making one if we fall out of top 2 but not certain. The fixture list will be released later today.
Yeah Italy really aren't up to much. They do have a bit of a curse over England though. Still, they haven't managed to fail to qualify for consecutive World Cup's by being an almighty side. They have a lot of issues also, namely their talent just isn't that good. What they do still have is very good managers but England really need to stop approaching good opposition with inferiority complexes. Against Italy we consistently give up the midfield and don't even try to compete.
Scotland showed Ukraine for what they are. Average. Italy can be beaten if we have a more progressive manager. I don't think we are up against any outstanding sides in this group
It’s a tough and competitive group which I actually welcome compared to the relatively easy groups in the past few qualifying campaigns but Southgate should negotiate us to at least second place even though like others have said, if he/we can get out of this safety first and negative mindset that Southgate seems to have unconsciously installed we really should be fine, no excuses.
