Technically I suppose there are a small number of voters from Reddit whose votes are included from pre 2000 in the summary for Big Soccer only, but after 2000 only in the Big Soccer/Reddit summaries (the same as the rest of the Reddit voters who only voted from 2000 onwards). I guess it doesn't change much though, and it seems a bit pointless to do two separate summaries for pre 2000 - maybe the Big Soccer one can also be considered the Big Soccer/Reddit one if that makes sense for the 90s and before (but for most of the decades there is only one Reddit voter anyway!).

Besides, I wondered if the BigSoccer/Reddit vote could be considered more "credible" than BigSoccer only.
In the spirit of the Ballon d'Or, the more people who vote, the better.
By that I mean that by extending our voting panel to Reddit, we expose to other opinions but that's also the strength of a vote, to have more opinions to have a homogeneous version and avoid favoritism bias for example, although some communities can bias with their opinions too.
So, I was wondering what would be the best panel of voters to express the Ballon d'Or awards revisited.

Mbappé is seriously downgraded in these ranking compared to the real results which were fair so far, I believe (the real/official or whatever bdo rankings if ever this sentence was not clear enough; it may be the case).
In other times, pre-CL, and when not everything was over-scrutinized, perhaps he'd have already make a podium, that's what I believe anyway.

I guess there is no reason not to add the next couple of years/seasons now I think about it, and just reveal the 2022 one once we get into perhaps late January/early February (or at least until everyone who is due to vote has done so, surely after the World Cup and into the Christmas/New Year period, so that those who want to fully consider calendar year still can do so - I know that the actual Ballon d'Or is brought forwards and is in effect going to be purely a 2021/22 vote...which is maybe funny/interesting it happens now given this year is when the 2022 World Cup will be played in late 2022 and so will only affect the 2023 (22/23) actual Ballon d'Or!).

That's unless every voter here would want to also switch to seasons from 21/22 onwards I guess, but I'm assuming not (I could myself if everyone else did though of course).

Maybe early next year I can have a look at adding years before 1950 too, after having a look through to see what we have in terms of votes - it will be a small number but from specialist guys so worth adding it I'm sure - I guess the extra time can help allow some others to add or clarify votes too (for example Peru FC might go further back than 1950 when he lets us know his full set of votes, or Tom Stevens might possibly convert his choices into a seasonal format like he's done now for post 1950 or something). It seems reasonable to wait a bit longer (until 2022 is added) to do that anyway I think, and it suits me to have a break from it for a bit probably too.

So I'll show the Big Soccer voting for the first couple of 2020s years now and then add in Reddit votes again....

    3 Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium/Manchester City) - 29
    4 Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal/Juventus) - 13
    5 Serge Gnabry (Germany/Bayern Munich) - 10
    6 Kylian Mbappe (France/Paris St Germain) - 9
    7 Joshua Kimmich (Germany/Bayern Munich), Manuel Neuer (Germany/Bayern Munich) - 8
    9 Neymar (Brazil/Paris St Germain) - 5
    10 Sadio Mane (Senegal/Liverpool) - 4
    11 Thomas Muller (Germany/Bayern Munich), Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands/Liverpool) - 1

One vote had no 4th or 5th place allocated.

Golden Ball positioned Lewandowski has eleven 1st place votes, and Neuer has the other one. Bronze Ball positioned De Bruyne has four of the 2nd place votes, but is two points behind Messi who has the edge in the Silver Ball race but just three 2nd place votes (Gnabry has a couple, and Lewandowski, Kimmich and Neymar the others).

    10 Harry Kane (England/Tottenham Hotspur), Marco Verratti (Italy/Paris St Germain) - 2
    12 Ilkay Gundogan (Germany/Manchester City) - 1

All voters voted for 5 players.

Golden Ball positioned Messi has eight 1st place votes, Silver Ball positioned Lewandowski has two and De Bruyne has the other one (so in that case with 5 points per 1st place Jorginho would be in 5th alone and De Bruyne one point further back in a tie for 6th). Benzema is in Bronze Ball position with his highest placing being 3rd - he was voted in that place five times.

For the 2013 vote, between all Big Soccer and Reddit voters, I counted eleven 1st place votes to C.Ronaldo and ten to Messi (Ribery has close to as many as them too, and Robben has one), so with 5 points per 1st place instead of 6 the lead wouldn't change for the overall Big Soccer/Reddit vote, but would just reduce to 3 points and Ribery would just move a little bit closer to the top points total but stay in 3rd.

For the 2018 vote it is Modric with nine 1st place votes, and C.Ronaldo and Messi with six each (in addition to three for Salah and two for Neymar from Big Soccer voters there is one for Griezmann from Reddit too), so again the overall lead from Big Soccer/Reddit votes doesn't change if using five points per 1st place.

Messi was top from just Big Soccer voters for those years, but not when adding in the Reddit votes therefore.

For 2021 Lewandowski has thirteen 1st places between Big Soccer and Reddit voters, and Messi has eleven (only De Bruyne has one still otherwise), so again that is a similar case where with either five or six points for 1st places Messi was ahead from just Big Soccer votes (though with a smaller gap with 5 points per 1st place), but when adding Reddit votes Lewandowski is ahead either way too (but with the points lead reduced to five if giving 5 points to 1st places).

I think I'm right in saying that for the Big Soccer only voting Eusebio and Charlton might still have the same number of 1st places each for 1966, but I am including one Reddit voter in that (if taking away the vote from that one Reddit voter who voted for years that far back Charlton would lose more points and a 1st place vote though, so if that was considered the tie breaker I guess Eusebio could be placed ahead...but it's a bit dubious to do it that way maybe, especially for an overall Big Soccer/Reddit vote - Eusebio was 3rd in the Reddit voters vote anyway with Artime 2nd, Moore 4th and Tostao 5th).

For the 2002 Big Soccer vote I think Ronaldo has more 1st places than Zidane so with five points per 1st place Zidane would be ahead. If that was the tie breaker Zidane could be placed 1st for the Big Soccer vote, but Ronaldo is ahead anyway in the Big Soccer/Reddit vote overall.

Sorry for taking so long to cast my votes, but it was not easy for me to choose in this decade. I really think it's a slightly overrated decade. I think there was more talent in other decades.

Thanks mate, I'll update the 90s standings later.

I'm not really sure I'd agree but like I said before maybe this thread shouldn't be for arguing lol....although perhaps a wider discussion about which decade was the most stacked would be interesting and add something, I don't know (on the other hand it could open a can of worms...and lead to discussion of the game inherantly improving, moving on, including in terms of developing 'talent', or not and perhaps even declining...and maybe we had too many of those discussions on the forum already). I feel like if talent refers to technical skills then the 90s was pretty well off though myself with various players, moreso than in terms of overall effectiveness of players perhaps even, but I would say that there probably weren't very many players who were consistently very good through the whole decade, so in that sense other decades would have more candidates.... - obviously when we talk of players with technical skills and also consistency/longevity then there is always overlap from one decade to another though and especially with the 90s (from the 80s, and into the 00s) maybe?

Nice to get your continued votes anyway; I'm sure IceBlood agrees and is happy to see them.

Thanks mate, I'll update the 00s and 2010s standings this morning probably, and also the pair of years using your 2020 and 2021 lists (2022 will be done early in the New Year probably, as both on Big Soccer and Reddit it is a mixture of some people waiting longer to consider the full calendar year and some already sending votes based on the 21/22 season only).

It probably makes sense to do it chronologically (and is better for IceBlood I guess, doing the summaries after my posts), and also it's good I think to re-post the complete set of 90s voting summaries now with an update, since they had become a bit fragmented (one update for 1990 and 1991 after Carlito voted on those years; another one for 1998 and 1999 after Danko voted on those years) so it's good to get them all in one post again. So I'll do the 90s update first (factoring in the new votes of anamnesis) - these include two or three votes from Reddit voters (three from 1997 onwards), but I've not started doing any separate lists yet anyway (just to clarify - there are quite a lot more Reddit voters for the 00s and especially the 2010s, so for those decades and the next years, there is one update for purely Big Soccer votes and another including all the Reddit ones too):

I think, with 5 points per 1st place (traditional system), Litmanen would still be ahead (with a slightly bigger gap even) of Weah in 1995, but Sammer would be ahead of Ronaldo in 1996 btw. Interestingly, going in the middle and valuing 1st places at 5.5 points would put them level by my calculations now (but Ronaldo having more 1st places might be seen as the tie breaker anyway in that case...and nobody is suggesting 5.5 points for 1st places for that matter!).

I guess it's decided we use 6 points primarily now though - maybe in reality going forwards in the real Ballon d'Or 1st places would still be a tie breaker (in favour of those with more 1st places) even with 6 points per 1st place, but I'm not sure - we'll see when it ever occurs I guess.

The two Reddit voters who voted for those years gave equal points to Weah and Litmanen for the 95 Ballon d'Or too (one 1st place each, and one 2nd place each).

They gave Ronaldo two more 1st places between them, and Sammer a 2nd and 3rd though, so in theory on purely Big Soccer votes Sammer would be ahead too (but only by a point if using 6 points per 1st place). So like with Eusebio in 1966 he'd be the leader for purely 'Big Soccer only voting' if separating out the few (one for 1966) Reddit votes into a Big Soccer/Reddit results list (and in that list Charlton/Eusebio would be tied for 1966's standings, and Ronaldo would lead the 1996 standings).

Hopefully that's not too difficult to follow! I'm not really saying two separate lists should be shown for pre-2000 years though, unless you think so IceBlood, but just adding some more detail and info....

For pure technique it is too generous to say the 90s was the best IMO
A portion of it was the other portion had better athletes id argue

The period between world cup 1990 and world cup 1994 had the highest concentration of world class technicians performing at top level at any one time in football history

There were roughly 10 Zidane level technicians in this period
    Amongst them
    Roberto baggio
    Gheorge Hagi
    Dennis bergkamp
    Dejan savecevic
    Rai
    Dragan stojkovic
    Romario de souza
    Enzo francescoli
    Micheal laudrup
    Marco van basten

Were all 8 or 9 out of 10 in football technique

Another 10 or so not that far behind in technique
    Amongst them
    Chris waddle
    Eric cantona
    John Barnes
    Ruud gullit
    Robert Prosinečki
    George weah
    Zola
    Ryan giggs

    Etc

For the purist it should be the best level of football

1995 to 2000 had some clones of the previous mini era(Del piero vs baggio there is a difference to the trained eye) but football was already moving towards a more physical as opposed to technically based endeavour

The most balanced era id argue between technique and physicality was the period between world cup 2006 and world cup 2010
    Amongst them being
    Ricardo Kaka
    Cristiano Ronaldo
    Lionel Messi
    Andres iniesta
    Arjen robben
    Zlatan ibrahimovic
    Cesc Fabregas
    Xavi Hernandez
    Wesley sneidjer

It already had the super tier 1 athletes and also players with shades of the 1990-1994 era

This was also the last ever football era that wasn't stat based

    Today(2022) there is Messi/Neymar

Players who are past it/recently retired

    Great athletes

    Pretenders

And others who flatter to deceive

That's probably mostly fair, and I know you have become pretty familiar with many early 90s players now (hence voting on 1990 and 1991 in this thread), although I suppose there is always a mix of technical and athletic players in any era, and some of those players were also quick and to an extent athletic (Van Basten although maybe moreso in the 80s, young Bergkamp, Savicevic, Michael Laudrup that you listed there; and then there is the impressive athlete, when not injured, Gullit, powerful runner Matthaus, powerful shooter/runner Batistuta, powerful shooter Shearer etc).

Among the top notch players at least I guess the mid 60s would come into it for a mix of both - Pele, Eusebio, Bobby Charlton, the speed and skill of young Cruyff and Beckenbauer etc, the technically adroit Rivera, the talented and quick Best and suchlike too....

EDIT - Being fair, Matthaus, at least as a powerful runner, might be more suitable as an 80s player in general maybe I should add (Baresi and to some extent Gullit similarly in terms of decline from peak athleticism and energetic running), or with 1990 as the 'end' anyway pretty much in terms of that rather than carrying on into virtually mid 90s - Matthaus did score some quality goals back at Bayern Munich though after he left Inter so still could offer something as a footballer and hadn't become completely immobile or something obviously (and with dribbling agility maybe as good as ever), or really slow. Being fair too (another edit lol!) maybe the same should be said about Stojkovic in general as a player - 1990 being the end of the peak period perhaps, for various reasons, although he retained his technical excellence in terms of ball playing at least I think pretty much and did very well still in the mid 90s albeit at club level playing in Japan. But yeah, probably fair to classify him more as late 80s to 1990 as a top level player who was a great technician, a bit like Matthaus as a top level player who was a great athlete around the same time.

    I agree

But stretching this to Cruyff and best is too much

Its like saying Platini and Maradona were of the same generation
    Or Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo

Contemporaries yes but same era not so much

Platini is actually of the generation of rivelino who was an idol to Maradona growing up

It's complicated even for me making the distinction between contemporaries and players of the same generation
