Good thing then because I didn't say that. I said his performances at the MLS level are not yet good. I think by almost any measure of full performance they are not quite good yet. He has ability and potential. He's young and has things to work on, so the performance level isn't there yet. Very understandable, but let's pump the brakes on the hype when the player isn't performing well yet at a relatively low level. No, that makes him a good prospect. I was responding to who is better now. The idea that Wiley is currently better than Gomez is highly highly questionable, in my opinion. I think we have a pretty good idea of if thats currently true. Thats something we can currently assess. Who becomes better, I didn't actually give an opinion on that, yet you've seemingly assigned me one. I think my opinion on who will be better is that it's very likely Gomez, but thats a lot more up for debate, as predicting the future is a lot harder to do and a lot more is variable. Anything is theoretically possible. Assessing the current situation is a lot easier. Thats what I opined on, yet you've assigned me an opinion for the future. Why is that?
Oh come on, the guy's in the 86th percentile for expected goals + assists in MLS. He's useful in progressing the ball. Gets on the ball in the penalty area. He's plainly a very strong player on offense. Get outta here.
So does defense not matter for a defender? You are bringing up something that is certainly a good thing, but doesn’t actually get to the full picture of the overall impact of the player.
I personally don't have a very strong opinion on whose better between Gomez and Wiley (my current view is that Gomez is probably the better player), but I'm mostly happy both are in camp and we're going to get to see them both play with the U20s which should give us some more data from which to further inform where each player stands.
Both sides with a lot of simple errors. Peru seems to be trying to pass. USA is looking for the long ball, very uncharacteristic for our team
One note. Some of our stronger players are not playing. I guess they are being saved for the Mexico game.
This field plays really fast. The ball is flying around and it’s made for a really sloppy start. Not sure I’ve seen 2 midfielders connect on a pass yet. Mostly NFL kickoff style long passes from the back.
where's the lineup?? Today's starting XI: 12 - Alexander Borto (GK), 2 - Mauricio Cuevas (Capt.), 3 - Justin Che, 5 - Brandan Craig, 8 - Jack McGylnn, 9 - Caden Clark, 13 - Jonathan Gomez, 16 - Rokas Pukstas, 17 - Brian Gutierrez, 18 - Alejandro Alvarado, 19 - Jackson Hopkins— U.S. Soccer YNT (@USYNT) September 21, 2022
This USA team is very disjoined. Hardly can make 2 passes together. Peru just scored on a simple over the top. It was JOJGO's man
Cuevas did well to jump that lazy ball in the center of the field, but couldn't find a lane and hit the only player in red within 20 yards.
They are playing very poorly. Time to wake up. Not playing Belize. We can barely cross midfield against Peru. They aren't a bad team, but certainly shouldn't be outplaying us to this level.
That was after what seemed like 3-4 horrible possessions by Cuevas, bad touches, give aways, lost possession. Then that play where he does great to jump it but he had 3 options better and much easier then the one he chose. And he's captain? oooof.
Wow this is bad, playing with lead boots. Slow moving, slow thinking, bad decisions, just bad passing. Peru isn't very good. Every player is playing below their basic skill level. TV shot of Varas, he's like 'am I being punk'd' ?
Never been impressed by Pukstas, and it’s probably been 2 years since been impressed by Clark. He’s like a sluggish shell of his former self.
