Something interesting to watch for this week: strong possibility that we end Sunday with a four-way tie for first place!
    8/17 - HOU def NJY
    8/19 - KC def LA
    8/20 - SD def HOU

(Apologies for my being quiet recently; still smarting from WAS 1-2 POR)

Possible but as a Angel City fan, we are known to surprise good teams with a win on the road. We will not be the favorites for our next 5 games on the road nor should we be. But our main goal as a club this first season is to at least make it in the top 6 teams and in order to do that, we need 3 points somewhere. We aren't a weak team that a top team can easily stomp on.

We beat the KC current at home and it wasn't easy, let's see how it goes on the road this time in front of their home fans.

WOW so current league leaders Portland Thorns lost to MEX #5th place Monterrey last nite for only their 2nd loss this year. To be sure they probably didn’t start a lot of their first tier player, but missing their PK’s in the shootout—Sinclair Weaver Beckie—-we should of been good enough. Thorns play Chelsea for 3rd place/first time NWSL didn’t make it into the ICC final

Happy that another Japanese player made an impact in NWSL :): Fuka Nagano posted a goal and an assist in NCC's 4-0 win vs Chicago that had the Courage finally leave the last position in the standings.

Good news for the Spirit: they earned points from a losing position for the first time in ages.

Bad news for the Spirit: they once again dropped points in stoppage time.

Washington Spirit never got out of their funk this season after being champions last year. Courage also having their worst season ever.

As for us, we’re chasing Chicago right now for that 6th spot. Hopefully we get 3 points today otherwise we are leaving a larger gap between 7th and 6th

Well I can definitely say the playoff push is gonna be interesting this year! The league has a clear and relatively even top 7 vying for the six playoff spots, (LA is 6pts back from first with two games in hand,) and that evenness means everything from first the first round away slots to the first round byes is gonna be in play.

The remaining five teams are in two tiers, with Orlando in the league middle tier, NC somewhere between middle and low tier, and the other three as definitely low tier. And that's mostly on table alone - if looking at skill, I think the top tier of seven could be split in two, and the Spirit aren't bottom tier based on most of their on-field play... But the table is the table

Pretty sure I've mentioned it in another thread, but just for some more perspective on the baffling season DC is having:

The whole "finding just one goal at the right time"/"leaking one goal at the wrong time" is nonetheless a carryover from last year. Normally you expect GD to be a good predictor of position on the table, but NWSL is always a bit chaotic and the Spirit seem to be masters of making things more extreme by the skin of their teeth. Last year, the Spirit were #3 on the table but behind 4 other teams in terms of GD; this year, they're second from the bottom but ahead of 3 other teams in terms of GD.

The biggest difference between last year, of course, is the defense's ability to close out games. The Spirit's front three aren't doing much worse than last year - currently 1.06 goals/game versus 1.21 last year. But the defense is leaking at a rate of 1.35 goals/game versus 1.08 last year, with 7 of their 23 goals against coming after the 80th minute. 7 out of 23 is more than average but doesn't feel like a lot on its own, until you realize they've dropped 10pts in 5 games from those 7 goals.

No. I don't think it's financially feasible at this point.

Well, we're getting VAR next year. As maligned as VAR is at the moment, it would certainly solve blatant errors like this.

Wonder if they can put two cameras in the goalpost or on it align to the goalie for VAR people to check it. Kind of like what we see in NFL where those cameras at the goal line boxes to make sure if their feet are inside or outside the end zone.

Well, yes, MLS has VAR. NWSL does not...yet. For VAR, you do have to pay not only for the cameras (not just 2), but the extra referees for each game (at minimum a VAR and AVAR and the tech guy who queues up what each need to see), plus the technology for instant replay in the booth and sending it down to the field.

Also two cameras on the goal line are NOT the minimum for goal line technology (and you can have VAR without GLT and vice versa. For example, MLS has VAR but not GLT). Most of the GLT systems have over 10 cameras pointed at the goal line from various angles for the sake of triangulation (think about the ball crossing the goal line in the air in the corner, then 2 cameras at the base of the goal/goal line are not enough). GLT technology also involves some way of alerting the referee when the ball crosses the line (usually a buzz on the watch). For leagues that have goal line technology and not VAR, it still has cost ~$200,000 to install the multiple high-speed cameras and the rest of the equipment. In systems like MLS, that have VAR but not GLT, then there's not that buzz when it crosses the line but the VAR is using the multiple cameras around the field to make the call...but that's still not as accurate as actual GLT.

Anyway, back to the original call: without VAR or GLT, it's pretty understandable how the referee and AR didn't see enough to call the goal...but in no way is it comprehensible where that becomes a corner kick. That was the major screw up.

I remember watching UNC have a camera overhead on the goal line to see if the ball was in or not. Can address that issue besides have two cameras facing only horizontally. Can have a temporary pole with camera align to see it.

I guess it's better than nothing, but one camera even from above still does not have the angle to tell for sure if any ball is fully across the line or not. Even VAR with all of its multiple camera angles covering the field is not as accurate as GLT with 14ish cameras focused on the goal line. It really does take that many.

Better than nothing considering that we can see the ball passing over the line clearly from our POV.

Best they can do is have even 5 cameras in goalpost with two lower, two in corners and one overhead. Or have 2 additional cameras set up in the stands or on temporary poles that are align to the goal line set up and see from distance.
