I mean the obvious theoretical reason for him to switch now would be the World Cup, if he believes or has reason to think Berhalter sees him as a serious candidate. Otherwise, yeah, there's no particular rush that I can see.
I remember something, probably here, which said GB and crew have followed and reached out to him. Everything I know says FB said he was not interested now, and it makes sense from his point of view. Fans trying to hard. Same way fans ignore our players issues and blame everything else out there, but certainly not the player!
I think he ultimately will switch even if it's not now and I think he'll want to play in the Euro U21 Championships (as Fabian Johnson once did). But the Olympics won't be a consideration as the UK doesn't compete in them except in 2012 when they were hosting. England wanted to field in a team in both 2016 and 2020 but Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales blocked it (they did allow it for the women though).
Any predictions? There’s good dual-nat news coming within the next week for the US program. No hints. Place your predictions.— USMNTProspects (@ProspectsUsmnt) August 15, 2022
Jonathan Gomez will be the best news. Since I'm in the mood for good news, I'll go with that. Jonathan Gomez will be at September camp.
I'll change my guess. That tweeter (who we know ) would be going a lot crazier if it was Balogun or Gomez. Notice he says US program and not USMNT. So I'm going to go with a U20. Tony Leone. Tony Leone will be at the next U20 camp. There's my refined guess.
It would seem notable, in a general way, if someone like Leone were to show up at a U.S. U20 camp -- even though Mexico's cycle is over and he's ineligible for ours. It's certainly possible; there's little to lose on his side and if the U.S. program likes they player, why not invite him, plus our U23 cycle likely won't start for a while. It would be the kind of thing that fires up the banter, for sure, and especially if he turns out to be a consequential player. Just for fun I'll SWAG that it's Anrie Chase. Seems safe to guess that someone with his bio has been at least contacted. I'm fairly certain he's not cap-tied to Japan at YNT level, though I could be mistaken.
Oh you're right. It wouldn't necessarily make sense for him to be at the U20 camp. Have we found out for sure that guys like Leone will be eligible our Olympic team? After all, the U20 CONCACAF Championships were the qualifiers for the Olympics. So maybe my refined guess isn't so good.
I mean, I don't think it's a crazy guess. It would be a mild surprise given the circumstances, but why not? As for the eligibility thing, I'm not aware of a ruling. It's just my guess that guys capped at U20 level will be "freed" for the U23s, which seems logical to me, for what little that's worth.
I know this is a joke but is it even possible? Afaik India doesn't allow for dual citizens so English-Indian players who expressed interest would have walked straight in their team (Michael Chopra, Danny Baath, Yann Dhanda) never got capped.
I'm not an expert on Indian issues but my read on this is that it wouldn't be. I read about Japanese-born player who eventually played for India after giving up his Japanese passport but apparently it's still all fantasy land. (There is an interesting Indian rule around what's called Overseas Citizenship of India but I suspect that the country doesn't consider such people eligible for the team as they are not actually considered citizens despite the name, and I'm guessing FIFA wouldn't go with it either.)
A few thoughts on Folarin Balogun:-Should be in the convo for the USMNT but much more work to do to earn a top 3 spot-USSF has long been in contact-Can't force a player to switch-Players can turn down the WC to go with the U21s of another nation. Happened with Giuseppe Rossi— ChuckMe92 Soccer (@ChuckMe92Soccer) August 18, 2022
I don't have the slightest clue how good Balogun is -- I've only ever seen highlights. But it is worth noting that we are already qualified for the Paris Olympics, if he is thinking U21.
And he has already played in the UEFA U21 tourney that qualifies them for the Olympics. That usually means he won't be eligible for the US in that tourney.
Though the UK is also extremely unlikely to compete in the Olympics even if England were to qualify through the UEFA U21 tourney. I wonder if there’s some loophole that would allow him to exploit.
The dawn of a new kind of multi eligible player recruitment? MLS homegrown player rules will loosen, with fewer territorial restrictions - The Athletic
The thing about this, though, is that it is looser restrictions but the 9 players tagged must feel like chattel.
This seems like the first in a 10 step 10 year process to basically get rid of the HGP territories, but this iteration seems to change little. You can basically lock down every 3-Star and above prospect in your academy and every 4-5 Star prospect that is in you territory but not in your academy. Next iteration the cap lowers.
