He's about 9 cm taller than Timber and faster than Blind.

On a very hot day in Amsterdam, Ajax took their scoring chances well winning 5-1. It could have been worse for Groningen had it not been for some very fine saves from the keeper. Bergwijn with a hat trick was MOTM. Solid play from everyone other than getting caught out and conceding a cheap goal.

    Player Ratings:

Passveer (6) - really had nothing to do and tried his best to cut down the angle on the goal
Rensch (6) - better game today but still is getting beat a little too easily
Timber (6) - didn't have much defending to do and got free deep in the box but could not put the header on frame
Blind (6) - good passing but his lack of quickness hurt when everyone was caught up field
Wijndal (6.5) - really did some good attacking down the left side
Alvarez (7.5) - disrupted everything in his area and had a great cross pass to Antony who cut in and scored
Taylor (7) - nice game with the ball at his feet and took good shot for his goal
Tadic (7) - solid game at 10 which is where he is likely to play going forward
Antony (7)- caused trouble for Groningen defenders all match long
Brobbey (6.5) - still a little clumsy when the ball is in at his feet in the box but was decent with his passing
Bergwihn (8) - wonderful game with three great goals
Klaassen (5) - on in the second half and hardly saw the ball
Berghuis (5.5) - took a nice PK following a hand ball
Lucca (5.5) - unleashed a wicked shot that was saved and seems to have good quickness for someone so tall
Schuurs (NR) - on late in what could be his last appearance in an Ajax shirt
Kudus (NR) - on late but had some good moments with the ball

    Sparta away next weekend.

I think Bassey for Blind and this is probably our best XI... I've been an Alvarez hater but the difference between him and Blind at DM is massive. Daley is probably best suited right now to be back up at 3 positions and rotate based on match-ups, suspensions, injuries, etc. His days of starting have to be over.

Tadic centrally I think will be very good. Just a little concerned about lack of pressing/defense from him with the midfield. But I guess Alvarez will balance that out.

Also Schreuder has already proven to be better than ten Hag with pulling guys in and out. Subbing. The true test IMO will be what he does with Blind.

    --

Didn't see anyone post about it but getting 9.5+ bonus + sell on for Schuurs is downright insane. Maybe he'll be like Botman and prove Ajax wrong/be sold for 4x what we sold him for. I just don't see it with him.

Very close to the optimal starting XI. IMO Schreuder should give playing time to Pierie, seemed more than decent as CD during preseason games. Just in case Bassey fails to deliver. He can also experiment with swapping Timber and Alvarez positions.

Bassey must be a starter plain and simple considering what they paid for him, and obviously he’s highly regarded by Ajax to pursued to begin with.

I haven't watch Jong Ajax yet this year but the consensus I've read is that Pierie is beyond awful. The handball gaffe was bad enough but just he has no shot to play for Ajax 1.

I agree on Timber/Alvarez switching and have said a few times here that I would flip them. Timber is a lot better passer.
Agreed-- no way we paid 20+ million euro for a non-starter. Rangers fans love him. I'm excited to watch him play (once I get a VPN!).

That was a fascinating discussion. I hadn't heard Sneijder speak in a long time and I found his point of view interesting. Ihattaren's situation is a very common one, unfortunately.

Sneijder is not happy with the KNVB Coaching License course and would prefer Coaching in the future at Galatasaray but to my knowledge he would rather Manage then “Coach/Train?

lol, that’s pretty funny. What opposite ends of the spectrum… was just in Sittard with Ajax where they have his face on the wall of the stadium.. to that. Hope it works out for him but I’m not terribly optimistic.

…and there is the story that we sell Antony for stupid money and get back Ziyech on a loan to buy? Yes to all of this.

I've been saying it all summer in this thread... But Antony situation has all been set up for him refusing to train/play and force a transfer.

If he sells for like 90+15 or something similar AND we can get Ziyech, Ajax will make out like bandits.

Wow. That is a ridiculous amount… highway robbery. Ajax should take the money, and call it a day! Darwin Nunez went for, reportedly, between 90-100m Euro. He is arguably more established (proven). Same age bracket. Nunez bagged thirty-six goals last year, including six in the Champions League. City getting Haaland for 60m feels like bargain of the century :eek:

Nunez also got the goal that knocked Ajax out of the CL.

EDIT: I also cannot believe any of this stuff about Antony to ManU. that team has been linked to 100 other players in the last month.

If this happens it will not be good. He was a decent back up for Taylor/Tadic in MF, instead we keep low value (footballwise) players like Klaasen and Berghujs.

Evidently Ajax turned down 80, Man U came back with 80+20. I'm thinking they split the difference something like 85+10. Who knows.... But Ajax would be downright insane to turn that down.

Haaland was release clause so artificially low.

I'm guessing we buy a deeper MF now that Kudus is (evidently) gone. Hopefully an upgrade over Klaassen who I just don't want to see in big matches. If we don't, we are relying very heavily on Alvarez + Taylor to be excellent.

We have some nice MFs coming up through the academy. Also Timber can move up to holding MF if need be.

Kudus is a nice player but I’m not heart broken if he leaves.

  23. Too early, he hasnot been long enough in the Eredivisie/UEFA cup matches to make the jump already.

Ordered the away kit with no player name, ended up getting Tadic and I’m actually pretty happy about that. So pumped we are back on ESPN  let’s go baby.
