Way too soon to give up on minutes for Richards. He will not see the pitch against the top of the EPL that seems likely. FA Cup games early on and if he delivers he'll get some games against the bottom third of the league later on in the season. Depends on how fast the mental part clicks.
Correct. He's only been with the team a few weeks, and you don't just recklessly throw a young CB into the fray. Of course, a 2-0 loss at home won't hurt his chances for PT.
I hear you. It is early, I agree. I was hoping he'd get a few cleanup minutes, but Viera is playing it safe. What's the worse that could happen? A 3-0 loss?
Started with the U21s today: https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/match-r...n-the-premier-league-2-division-1/2022-08-08/ Crystal Palace: Goodman, D. Boateng (Phillips, 74), O’Brien, Richards (Watson, 65), Wells-Morrison, Hughes, Riedewald, Rak-Sakyi, Ebiowei (Street, 80), Mateta (Gordon, 80), Plange.
Minutes. Fitness. Richards barely had any pre-season matches. And whether you like it or not Andersen started 32 of their 38 league games last year. He's their guy till he proves otherwise. Which isn't to say that Chris won't get chances, he will, but expecting him to unseat a starter while he's only been at the club for less than 3 weeks is absurd.
He was a late transfer the last two seasons on loan and made due. Having a previous coach at Hoff helped but Palace paid quite a bit for him. The schedule is tough in the EPL especially when you are still in 3 domestic comps. So he should get time even if they don’t move to 3 CBs. Also, moving to 5 subs might help his chances.
Richards needs to beat out Marc Guehi, who was the worst player on the field against Arsenal last match. He had an own goal. Palace are away at Liverpool. I think Richards will get minutes off the bench.
Yea Richards really lucked out at Hoffenheim with a coach who was fairly committed to keep playing him even through some of the “learning moments” he had defensively as a young CB. Especially given that he was on loan. I felt like the coach was confident he would get Richards on a permanent deal. We know he can provide better passing out of the back than some of his competition, the question is if he can handle the pace and physicality of the PL defensively better than his competition.
On the bench for 1st game.. Our starting XI to take on Liverpool tonight ❤️💙#CPFC | #LIVCRY— Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) August 15, 2022
Kind of happy his 1st start didn't come against an/a angry/motivated Liverpool. Perhaps Palace pulls off the upset but it seems like the kind of game that could turn ugly.
Not super thrilled. Playing 3ATB today would have liked to see him in there, but my guess is they are still easing him in to it/getting up to match fitness.
Still 1-0 Palace approaching minute 50. Liverpool with almost a 3-1 advantage in possession, not that that necessarily means much. But it could mean Palace are going to get tired and that multiple substitutions, including defensively would be needed which may mean our guy gets in the game. We shall see.
Right after I say that, Nunez is red carded but somehow Liverpool ties it up in minute 61. Maybe still good for CR to get in (unless Palace go behind; now I have for sure jinxed them to go behind ;().
