The final score is: 4 - 1 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G P.S. = Please don't post results of other soccer (including MLS) games and other sports' games in this thread until at least 24 hours after they've ended.
Danny Hoesen with the game tying goal, Austin wins (4-3 over SKC) to keep us out of the basement (for now).
Glad to see Danny Hoesen still playing (and scoring) after all his setbacks..... mean while back to the Quakes game......got nothing worth mentioning....
Just got back and saw the other goals. Jebo had a nice one but other than that, the Quakes are pretty much a disgrace of a team. Honestly, I see no signs of improvement on the horizon. Unless a miracle happens and they magically get better between now and next February or March, I think we are in store for more of the same for the 2023 season. This club needs at least 8-10 good players If they want to be competitive.
We can keep talking about GK, LB, RB, CB, DM, CM LM, RM, ACM, CF, the coach, mistakes, errors or whatever every game. I don't even want to comment on individual game any more. It's just a very bad team as bad teams find ways to lose. You get what you put together. That's their level.
Just got back from the Giants game. I peeked at the in-game thread between innings so I knew I wasn't missing anything. Watched the highlights and it was worse than I thought it would be. Next week won't be any better...
Next week might be better because they will be motivated and not playing in a blast furnace. If the refs aren’t on the take (big if), the Quakes can get a result at home.
Watching the Aftershock post game show and thinking “Matias Almeyda would not have come out after that game”. Props to Covelo for facing the uncomfortable questions.
That first Dallas goal. JT lobs a sacrifice fly to Little Tommy. Tommy should have signaled for a fair catch, or maybe the infield fly rule should have taken effect. Because Tommy would be hard pressed to out jump Gimli, let alone an opponent in that situation. Then Nathan looked like a U-12 player misjudging the flight of the ball. More shambolic defending.
TT is short but he actually has some hops. The ball was a little short and the Dallas player came up and kind of bumped TT off it it. But the Nathan misjudge was the big problem there. And then Beason chose to more or less ignore Ferreira when I believe Nathan was pointing, trying to get him on Ferreira. When Beason moved into mark the ball instead, Nathan kind of started heading towards Ferreira but it was way late by then. A lot of our goals conceded recently have been due to failure to pick up runners coming out of midfield. Second goal, ball went through our right side, TT went to mark the ball in the corner, we had good numbers, not an emergency, but then the runner came out of midfield and Yueill didn't pick him up, and JT got beat near post. Not JT's best game. Not sure if he was really 100%. But Yueill needed to pick go that runner and mark him. Third goal I'm going to put Nathan at primary fault again. Dallas is countering, Quakes line is there - TT, Nathan and Beason and in position to defend but Nathan breaks ranks to try to pressure Ferreira, who has the ball. Ferreira easily passes and then goes on a run. Nathan initially non-chalants his turn and run, and then high-tails it but he's too late at that point. Jebo hit a couple of really good long shots in this game - one with his left that almost caught the keeper out and then the goal which he hit with his right foot. Man if he can add that to his game - usually he shanks those, that's going to be huge.
A tie and a loss on a Tx road trip is not the worst thing in the world. MLS teams don't usually win road games. The killer was the home losses to Houston and Montreal, and that last second tie to RSL(?). Really it's that Houston game that set up the downward spiral, being up 1-0 late and then ending up with a 2-1 loss.
Hot take analysis: Dallas is good, we are not. Nathan had his weekly his ill-advised overly-aggressive step into midfield, and it cost us a goal this time. Maybe one day when our academy is rolling and selling players, we will reinvest $7m in some future Alan Velasco, but I doubt it.
