He conceded that Maddison goal at least a half-dozen times last season. It's a clear weakness for him. Passing is great, but his command of his area...isn't, which makes everyone a little bit nervous and more mistake-prone. I don't mean to be negative; it was a very fun game and pretty good performance overall. I just think this team can do very well this season, so silly mistakes like the ones Ramsdale is prone to are more frustrating than they would have been in seasons past.
Sure. But I'd just add, he's still very young in goalkeeper years. I think he'll improve as he gains more experience.
Also just want to say I didn’t see what some of y’all watched re: Leicester limiting us or threatening us. I watched a domination by Arsenal that had a couple weird moments. But make no mistake we dominated that side all day. Also, Tielemans is a no for me.
Yeah, not writing him off or anything. I am concerned about the decline in performance throughout last season though. Hope he turns it around.
The "foul" on Vardy that was overturned (he didn't need to be out there), the nutmeg, the miscommunication on the OG... He didn't exactly cover himself in glory today. He does need to improve; though I do not think Turner is up to taking the starting spot.
On his reputation, I was a little worried about him joining Chelsea, but after what Martinelli did to him today, I’m more than happy for Chelsea to spend £70m+ on him.
I completely agree on all counts. Arsenal had 19 shots, 7 on target, while Leicester had 7 shots with just 2 on target. Re Tielemans, I’ve been skeptical of that transfer rumor for a while and off today’s performances, if you have Xhaka and Tielemans in the same team vying for the same starting spot, I think you have to choose Xhaka.
Still need to see him maintain this for more than a couple of games. Getting a brace, a goal the next game, and then disappearing for 9-10 games is the kind of form I was worried about.
As opposed to Laca who would have scored or created fvck all in these two matches? I understand your concern, but it’s just not even remotely a valid comparison.
I’m not on Twitter and I generally only come on the game day thread at halftime or after the game. I like to focus on the game without the influence of other opinions, including TV commentators, who I mostly take with a grain of salt, and express my views on the game and player performances after the fact.
Exactly lol I’m gonna try to dig this up, but I remember seeing an analysis done last year, before the transfer, by a goalkeeping blogger who said that losing one on ones between the legs was a specific noticeable technical flaw of Ramsdale’s despite him being an otherwise exceptional one on one shot stopper. Actually it was from this Latte Firm interview with John Harrison: I disagree with you on area command though, especially regarding crosses and aerial balls. It’s hard to remember now but the switch between him and Leno was like night and day in this regard. Leno was a wet hen when it came to aerial balls (the culminating point of this being the throw-in goal away at Brentford) whereas Ramsdale at least effectively communicates with his defenders and has decent instincts. I distinctly remember the vibe of the backline with Leno being very nervous for years while all of them seem much more assured now.
leno is a good goalkeeper and a terrific shot stopper but i never felt much area command from him. at all. i mean, i guess you can attribute it to him being the quiet type but i still feel like you need some vocal commands or directions to your defenders. not comparing them qualitatively but leno felt like a better almunia where they are very good shotstoppers who didn't command their area and, man, i was always nervous on crosses with them.
The switch was notable. Ramsdale has gotten significantly worse since then, like he got too confident and now pursues everything a little bit recklessly. Ramsdale in October 2021 was a better goalkeeper than Ramsdale in August 2022, and the decline is pretty uniform in all facets of the game except distribution. Leno was a wet noodle in the air.
That’s fair but I still don’t think Ramsdale has ever been as bad as Leno in the air. Of note is our pristine record on defensive corners, for which I would contend Ramsdale is partly responsible.
Martinelli's strength has been a sight to behold. That, coupled with his pressing and work rate which has always been good is a wonderful recipe. Sky's the limit for him it feels like. Zinchenko was pretty much perfect in this game. What a wonderful addition. It's like having Tomas Rosicky play fullback. I found myself irritated with Saka on multiple occasions. Primarily in the first half he was playing at a walking pace in possession, standing on the ball. He brought me back to our time with David Luiz. Jesus and Martinelli are such a headache for defenders because they're immediately on the move when they receive the ball. Unimpressed with Tielemans today.
In the interest of perspective on this match, City beat Leicester at the Etihad last season 6-3, going up 4-0. Leicerster cut it to 4-3, and then City put it away. Roughly comparable to this result, and a reminder that Leicester are capable of scoring goals against high-level opposition.

I just heard about how the fans were cheering Saliba every time he touched the ball after his unfortunate OG. Sounds like pure class from the Clock End. The way I watch a game live isn’t the best for hearing all of the crowd noise. Just now on YouTube all I found was his touches compilation. Anyone got a good video of the fans repeatedly cheering him?
Whole game, no, but this from late on is a great example. Standing ovation for winning the ball off Daka: https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunners/comments/wo3k10/the_crowd_rise_to_their_feet_as_saliba_wins_the/
That’s the kind of defensive action which would get a cheer regardless. What Elliot seemed to be saying on AV was that after the OG, every time he touched the ball the crowd would cheer him.
On the Arsecast Extra Andrew plays audio (from a Spanish language broadcast, naturally) of his very first touch after the og and there is a very obvious ovation. Can’t speak to more than that as I also watched it without audio.
I don't have a video but I watched the match on normal TV and the crowd definitely upped the volume on applause/cheering on Saliba's first touches after the OG. It was unmistakable.
Easy, easy now. It's 47h45m until KO. And my excuse for missing that target by 15mins is a good one... had to be a hospital chaffeur this morning . In any case, ask and ye shall receive... https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/bournemouth-vs-arsenal-epl-20-aug-2022.2122201/
