Jozy made his debut for Puebla. Guess the Mexican immigration officials don't need weeks to get a footballer on the pitch.
Howard got hurt in the Mexico game early in the cycle and was never the same again for club or country. I actually think Steffen's back has created a lot of his issues as well. But yeah, Howard's drop from all-world to mediocre MLS GK was one huge element. Bruce made a couple of late tactical errors, IMO. We had no room to move because JK stopped coaching at some point. Brooks had stinkers and then got hurt. Cameron had a stinker. Lletget looked great and got hurt. There was just a lot of blame to go around, but Jozy and Bradley -- not blameless -- seem to shoulder it all. Even in the T&T debacle, it's weird Bradley gets blasted for jogging to a corner flag more than Omar for the OG or Nagbe/Howard's terrible work on the second T&T goal.
Omar and Nagbe / Howard were bad but mistakes. At the end of a game that knocks you out of the WC when someone is jogging they are going to catch heat. It's not a mistake it's effort. Anyway Howard shouldn't have been starting as that's on Arena for not realizing he was past it. Arena gets a lot of blame also because he didn't really rotate as he should have.
The relative level of heat is odd. And Jozy as well. These are guys a bunch of people never liked, and have just rallied behind it.
I liked Bradley up until that moment. I don't hate him but he lost a lot of respect. He'd always been prickly and expected teammates to defer to him especially newbies but one of the best attributes of US men's players has always been hustle. No matter how talented our players become I hope they never lose that.
I assumed he was exhausted and wanted to get his breathing under control for the corner. He should have enough credit in the bank IMO.
Cap’em Jozy Altidore scores on his debut for Puebla in Liga MX. The USMNT’s last undisputed No. 9 still grinding away. May it be the first of many. 🇺🇸❤️pic.twitter.com/AnefEWD5rt— Men in Blazers (@MenInBlazers) August 13, 2022
Apparently he almost got another in stoppage time. I don't think he's going to Qatar but I hope he makes Gregg think about it.
Gregg's not thinking about it. Altidore isn't going to Qatar. We'll all be thrilled if he gets on a roll here in Mexico, but he's out of the USMNT picture. Seriously, can we get over this trend of suggesting guys for the upcoming World Cup squad because they've scored one goal? Please?
If he were to get on a roll between now and the September camp I think he’d definitely be in contention for a call up for that camp. Berhalter referred to him recently as a hall of famer and one of the best ever. I wouldn’t write him off, but I think it’s unlikely he’ll play well enough between now and then to make his inclusion a likely scenario.
I only posted the goal in here because I couldn’t find the Yank Broad thread. He’d have to go on an absolute tear to get a sniff at this point. I don’t have any problem imagining our current crop of strikers having extreme issues scoring come Qatar, however.
Jozy would be a very high risk move even with 26 roster spots. Too high a chance of injury. And as I always ask in these discussions ...the other part of the equation....who do you leave home to bring him?
not gonna lie- im a little interested in this "yank broad" thread as well is there/has there ever been a place for mexico/south american based players? is that in ya and ive just never noticed?
Not sure if he ever scored against Mexico but if he scores a bunch of goals in Mexico, that's the next best thing
With a 26 man roster you can afford to take the risk and I feel like the guy you leave home would be Pefok. Realistically though Altidore isn’t likely going to play at the level that warrants his inclusion.
Well we’re also talking about a hypothetical Jozy who is healthy and tearing up Liga MX. One we are unlikely to see but who would almost certainly get a shot if we do.
