The thing of it is that should Vanney have 3 or 4 years. Nothing is written that he will be successful. We could very well see this team be in 2024 and missing playoff again or barely making it with another swift exit. Nothing is guaranteed by pulling a Benny Olsen on this dude Vanney.

Tack on to that the same FO could be there pulling jackass moves on available personnel like with Costa and a slew of other players now gone and all it is , is a coin flip.

Having to wait years more for Vanney to get the people he wants does not mean his tactics will work on the field then.

The future of this team is so complicated.

I don’t get the “Vanney needs more time” or “Vanney just needs the right players for his system” arguments. They all ignore the absolutely clear evidence that Vanney just isn’t very bright when it comes to coaching the game of soccer. No smart coach would be playing Cabral month after month and only letting Joveljic off the bench because his repeated scoring forced the coach’ hand. No smart coach would not recognize and fix the massive errors our back line continues to make. Their disorganization and failure to do the basics is laughable if it weren’t so sad. How f’king hard is it to teach defenders to mark players!
Need I go on? No smart coach would have rubber stamped the acquisition of Costa. And I predict Puig wll be another disappointment that Vanney gave a thumbs up to. No smart coach would have started crappy outside backs at must win SKC. And they certainly wouldn’t be calmly spouting soccer jargon after giving up 3 soft goals by halftime. Bruce would refused to come out of the locker room because of all the yelling that needed to take place. If he did grant an interview it would be terse and seething: “It’s not rocket scuence - the players just need to mark their men! If they can’t do the basics they need to find another club to play for.”
Bad decision piled on top of bad decision on top of bad decision. How much more proof do you guys need?

I fear who the new coach would be that Klein hires, but yes. Vanney should be fired if he we miss the playoffs because he can’t do the job.

Not that it would affect anything with the Galaxy (or Donovan's job security with San Diego), but the Loyal have lost 3 in a row and 4 out of the last 5 (and two of their losses have been to bottom feeders). They're still in 2d place in the Western Conference, but they've kind of been limping to the finish line this season. Not sure what's going on there.

I wouldn’t fire him at this point unless we were replacing him with a known upgrade. I’m a massive fan of both Donovan and Keane as players and as people. But have either one proven they are good coaches? I don’t want us to bring in someone just because we liked them as players.

Now if Vanney had approved another crappy roster addition this past summer I would want him out now. But - and I can’t believe I am saying this - our club did a good job recruiting Brugman, Puig and so far it looks like Cereres as well. Since acquiring Puig we are improving as a team and starting to gel. So I would optimistically hope Vanney isn’t learn-proof and next season he finally will flip-flop the amount of playing time he is giving to Cabral and Dejan and we start on a Cup winning binge.

I say give him one more year if he doesn’t do anything too egregious in the next few games.

I'd take Ante Razov back before LD or Keane.

Klein and the FO need to go. Then I'd pull a Moneyball move and trade/cut Cabral and Costa whether Vanney wants them or not. You can't play people who aren't on the roster.

I think Vanney has made some great additions to the club, I also think his starting lineup has cost us games. There has to be some accountability....

I agree the player signings were huge successes to offset the huge failures; however, even with that Vanney continues to squander points - running out Vasquez in the heat - shown limited ability to direct key on the field decisions (like get someone other than Chich to take a PK), damaging relations with Arraujo, Alvarez (and these are just the ones we know about). If we don’t make the playoffs, he will completely lose the locker room - and he’ll have to go, and it will be deserved. That doesn’t get Klein off the hook, but Vanney has done enough/ not done enough on his own to warrant his exit.

Let's revisit shall we? I think we've seen enough. Post-WC we might even be able to bring in a top coach if we cut bait after this season. However, we MUST make changes at the top or it won't really matter what coach we bring in.

Only fire Vanney if we also broom out Klein at the same time. If we don't remove Klein, then why bother....

When the pandemic hit I put all my money into fixer cars. Otherwise I would have literally hundreds of dollars to contribute.

I voted yes because he has been bad unfortunately. He doesn’t have a hold of the team. It seems like they walk all over him or he doesn’t give enough direction. Seems like he just lets them out there and figures they know what to do.

Seeing Javier miss another PK after that panenka solidified it for me. There should have been a clear directive that Javier doesn’t take them anymore.

With all that said we are in the same terrible situation if we still have the same shitty FO. I want them all gone and our DPs gone too.

after seeing expansion teams having some success the past couple of years, it feels like it would be easier to build an expansion team, then clean up this mess

I think we have most of the pieces, they are just being misused. If Cabrals minutes went to Dejan and we played three cb's we would be a good team. Hell we were a good team last Sunday due to the three cb's being impenetrable. Replace our two DP's with real DP's and add a competent coach and we would be a top of the table team, imo.

I was thinking bigger picture, you have sunk money on useless DPs, a disgruntled fanbase and having to bring those two things up to standards seems like it would take a lot of effort and extra money as you're working from a negative and when you have the same people in the organization getting do over after do over my remark was more tongue in cheek that starting from scratch seems like an easier proposition

and if the ifs, woulds and replacing incompetence with competence ever happens, yes this an upper table team

We agree the organization has a stench that will only be erased with the firing of Klein and his cronies. I also think Vanney is likely fatally flawed. I’m just saying there are 10-12 really good players on this team that I’m fine with keeping. Those 10-12 aren’t losers - they just aren’t being put in a position to succeed. In my opinion.

What do people think of hiring Berhalter after the WC? I think he will be angling for the 2026 US job but it remains to be seen what US Soccer/fan base think of that when we see how he does in Qatar.

Personally, i prefer the way Vanney thinks about the game of soccer in general but there's planning and then there's execution. The execution of the plan has been unsatisfactory. Not his fault? Dunno.

In the meantime, Berhalter has gained a lot of experience with higher level players on the US team playing at big clubs in Europe and is thinking a lot differently about the game than he did with Columbus Crew.

    Saw this on Twitter:

When the Galaxy have 62% or higher possession in a game:

    2-7-1

When the Galaxy have 50% or lower possession in a game:

    7-0-0

These stats are pretty clear: Greg Vanney wants a possession team but he has counterattacking players. He is trying to cram the square peg in the round hole....

He's built a crab and wonders why it doesn't go forwards. That's our Vanney.

I wouldn’t want Landon or Keane. They may turn in to great managers one day but thus far there’s not a lot of evidence to say they’re anything other than fine. But most importantly I wouldn’t want to watch them fail here due to the incompetence of the front office and mar their legendary status.

If they were smart they’d stay far away from this shit show.

That is an amazing stat. Just a couple if dats agi I was reading an article or post about another team doing significantly better with less possession but it wasn’t as lopsided as this.

Proof jf thus concept came last night when the whole game changed when we had everyone pushed up flat across the final 3rd, Gasper gets stripped with no cover in sight and after a 70 yard breakaway they score, completely against the run of play. This not only cost us the goal, the ease and rapidity of their score also knocked the wind out of the team and fans alike.

We’ve been giving up these soft counterattack goals for several seasons now. It’s infuriating because such soft counters are 95% preventable simply by the team keeping it’s shape. By keeping shape I mean never having the whole team in a flat line across the top; there has to be depth as well as width, players providing cover to slow down or foul our opponents if we get dispossessed.

In general the “win much more often when we have less possession” stat is another way of saying “create your own counterattacks while denying them to your opponent.” And this is why building a team around a solid defensive base is so successful, more so than building around possession. Which in turn is an argument for playing 3 cb’s. I promise you that if Vanney had started a back 3 of Williams-Segsa-Caceres we would not have given up 3 goals to VAN.

And I think our offense also would have been better - couldn’t have been worse. Playing 3 cb’s and two real wingers would have helped us flip the tables, creatong our own dangerous counterattack scoring opportunities.

One final point - on that goal after Gaspers turnover I noticed that Caceres was outrun and then just gave up before the end of the play. This is consistent with the picture painted from his career stats - he likes to go forward, a lot. He has neither the speed nor the defense-first mindset to be an anchoring last man on D. Sega, otoh, is speedy and is happy to stay back 95% of the time.

In the previous game, against a superior opponent, Caceres looked quite comfortable and effective as the right cb in a 3 cb lineup. That us because Sega providing cover freed Caceres up to join the attack more often. in fact in that game when Caceres pushed up, Sega smoothly shifted a bit to the right and Williams dropped more to the center, keeping our nice shape and our defense secure.
