While Garland/DOJ/FBI deserves praise for the way they handled this week….at some point we’re going to have to discuss how it took them 18 months to recover TS nuclear documents stored in an unsecure location by a man they were at best..:unable to prove was not conspiring with the Russians in the lead up to the 2016 election, and of whom one of their own investigators stated had obstructed their investigation into the Russian interference. 18 months.
Ya know what, I think the Post was duped here. No way the federal gov't played with kid gloves to get nuclear secrets back from Trump for over a year. This was planted to make what ever really was in boxes look like small potatoes.
The whole point is laws exist to stop people with clearance stealing top secret or sensitive government info - and they cover precisely the kind of scenario where a corrupt elected or government official tries to run off with evidence or valuable content. He should be arrested and in jail right now.
Meh, this is more regional and personal, and associated with performance. People will like "fighting" tweets, FB posts, etc. But in person is a different story. Around here, people get uncomfortable when the conversation is too direct, which is associated with "fighting." Usually. In Memphis, if you were not direct enough, you were considered weak. I would say American's like underdogs who fight. This is one of the reasons that Trump is successful. He presents himself as an underdog who fights. It's performance, and if you look at him in person, he is fundamentally weak and a coward.
Considering what they were, I'm going with some counterintel operation. Even as Garland/Justice seems to be moving slow, I would expect that they knew there were nuclear documents in those boxes. Did Trump? He might not. He might have been selling boxes like baseball card companies do. That said, I would suspect he was selling something, and the FBI/Justice knew that and were monitoring what was being discussed, and who was discussing what with whom. Trump Co. are idiots. But whom they are dealing with are not. At least in this area.
I wonder if Liddle Marco will defend Trump Adding this link for absolutely no reason : https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/...e-trusted-with-americas-nuclear-weapons-codes
I don't have much to add other than bringing up that we don't have a sense what "nuclear documents" refer to. We're aware - and I read recently, specifically related to this situation - that Trump's intelligence reports and briefings were, shall we say, different from other presidents'. He doesn't read, so he wasn't given detailed documents to pour over in the WH residence (that could have been kept and spirited away to Florida). Lots of his briefings were verbal. Or content was dumbed down to bullet points on a single page. Then, of course, intelligence grew to distrust him and kept certain confidential information away from him altogether. The implication being that documents that he would already have had in his possession might be very confidential, but perhaps less so - or less comprehensive and complete - than would have been the case with a normal, less treasonous president. Anyway, we know there was a subpoena to get back documents, and that clearly wasn't entirely successful. So the process of confirming what's in Florida and getting it back has been taking place for some months. We also know that this "raid" was, in fact, a very low profile affair by the FBI, not structured to create any public knowledge that would embarrass Trump. A lot has been said about Citizen Trump, like any other citizen, has to obey the law. But it seems obvious that the FBI has been giving Trump far, far more leeway in this situation than any other private citizen would have benefitted from. Had Trump not gone public about this, we'd not have known anything about it.
I think it is counterintel as well, slow play to see what he is going to do with them. He just hosted a golf tourney at one of his clubs that was attended by some high ranking Saudi officials....
This is Marcys argument and why trump won't release the warrant copy he has It lists an espionage crime
Fruits of crime nonetheless... “fruits of crime”...”illegally possessed” https://t.co/y02awpVbTI— Laura Rozen (@lrozen) August 12, 2022 P.S. Garland has the receipts. Which thread are we using for the Bigly nuclear document theft? It seems to be in three threads Insurrection Tweet thread This thread
Guys - Trump didn't pack the boxes! Some coffee boy did it. This can all be explained! Day 1: It's a Deep State conspiracyDay 2: It's all a hoaxDay 3: The evidence was plantedDay 4: Yeah, but Obama did it tooDay 5: Trump did it, but it was an accident https://t.co/TxbDq09gmW— Dan Pfeiffer (@danpfeiffer) August 12, 2022
Dbag released details to favorite Wingnut sites like Breitbart who published agents names. Awesome. He released it with FBI agents names, which @BreitbartNews published. You know the DOJ/court wouldn't do that. He knew @WSJ would not publish their names. Fox? Give Watters half a minute to get art on them or photoshop something...— Sue "Russian warship go F yourself!" 🇺🇦 (@Sue99339007) August 12, 2022
Sorry to link to a tweet citing Breitbart…but they’re as likely as anyone to have direct access to primary sources within trumps orbit 1558160302260162560 is not a valid tweet id Obstruction of justice, removal of records….and….espionage are the statutes cited in the warrant. yeah…this is pretty ********ing big. my advice…but corn futures…cause I’m gonna be eating popcorn by the truckload in the next two years.
Malice or incompetence…the result really should be the same. I expect trump et al to start arguing that if the documents were really that big of a deal…the FBI would have raided MAL on January 21. not sure that’s going to work well for them. My best guess is that the whitehouse did such a shitty job with record keeping…it was a lot more difficult than normal to track who ended up with what classified material…and what classified material went to the WH only to disappear. So it’s possible it took that long to identify everything shared with trump..:and what was not returned. But still…18 months
So based on the public info we have, there would seem to be enough to indict trump for espionage under 793 for possessing the documents and not giving them back after the subpoena process That is even before a question of whether he gave the content to any 3rd party Obviously if a normal person with access did this (run off with top secret nuclear info) they'd be arrested in about 2 seconds 1557920321411350529 is not a valid tweet id
There's understandably a lot of buzz around the presence of the Espionage Act in the warrant, but I think the obstruction statute may be equally significant. Probable cause that Trump and his cronies were concealing documents in order to obstruct an investigation - that seems like a very big deal.
