With the Tour starting in Denmark and the Vuelta in the Netherlands, it feels like the Giro should have started in Belgium this year.
This guy will be missed. TADEJ POGACAR TO SKIP VUELTA A ESPANA TO FOCUS ON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND ONE-DAY CLASSICS Pogacar had been due to compete at the Vuelta, but UAE Team Emirates have now confirmed that the Slovenian will not be at the Spanish Grand Tour. The 23-year-old finished second at the Tour de France behind Jonas Vingegaard. Along with a tilt at a world title in Geelong, Pogacar will defend his Il Lombardia crown with a classics-focussed end-of-season schedule.
The rumor 5-6 days ago was that Roglič cracked two vertebrae at the Tour and that it might jeopardize his participation in the Vuelta. Has anyone heard anything beyond the rumor stage about this? It's nice to see his name on that list, but I know he was in pretty bad shape when he ended his '22 Tour effort.
I haven’t heard anything about that yet. I know he took some stick when he quit the tour. Perhaps there is a backstory.
Evidently, it was Jumbo Visma sent that sent him home. https://www.eurosport.com/cycling/t...ury-which-saw-saw-him-_sto9040601/story.shtml
Probably not. I think they all put their names up hoping that they’ll be fit and the teams work out. My guess is those published names are probably part of the advertising for the fans.
Plus, teams can take 8 riders each, and only INEOS shows that number. The other teams range from 0 to 12 names. So, yeah, lots of decisions to be made, on to who to add and who to subtract.
Subscribed. I'm bummed I missed the reinvigorated Tour thread (I was backpacking in the Rockies) but I'm happy to be a part of these threads in the future.
Backpacking in the Rockies is a good excuse. I did a lot of backpacking in “my” days. Well just nine days to go. Rodlic called the TdF a good warm up for the Vuelta.
This could/will be a big factor. “…… with a wide-open start list that likely might not include any of cycling’s “Big Four.” Roglič is part of that rarified company, along with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers).”
I think it's kind of a stretch to put Bernal in that category, but I guess if none of the other three guys were there, then his chances would have been pretty good.
It was reported that Roglic returned to training a few days ago. Whether he’ll be fit for the Vuelta is anyone’s guess. Does anyone know when teams must submit their official riders list? We may not know Roglic’s true status until then.
I always assumed that a shoulder/collarbone injury wouldn't set cyclists back all that much due to the fact that they can still do cardio training, but I've also read that his injury was worse than initially reported. He would certainly be a wildcard if he ends up competing.

Second stage, a long flat stage, with all the excitement in the last 10 miles. Jumbo-Visna nowhere in sight, while INEOS pushed to the end. An frantic sprint win for Sam Bennett the Irish rider. From VeloNews: “Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) ended a long wait for another grand tour stage victory, clocking up success on the first sprint stage of the Vuelta a España on Saturday. The Irishman had a perfect leadout from his Bora-Hansgrohe team and finished half a length clear of Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segefredo) and Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Deceuninck) in Utrecht.”
