He’s not playing in the World Cup unless we have a rash of injuries. Turner will almost certainly start if he’s healthy. He’s not likely to play enough at Arsenal to have an extended poor stretch, and the two games in September are not enough to drop him on the depth chart. even if you really don’t like Steffen or Horvath (and I would put myself in that category), Sean Johnson would be a very justifiable and comfortable pick for GB. I think he would need to be pretty bad in the fall to justify letting Slonina past him. With that said, injuries do happen, and it’s not crazy to think that the other two might not be available. Turner, Slonina, and Johnson would be my call-ins for September if I were berhalter. If Slonina clearly outshines Johnson in camp, he could make it a tough call for berhalter. Not entirely relevant, but I want to clarify that I think Turner is closer in quality to our greats than he is the other keepers in the pool. That’s not to say he is great. But I do think he has been very consistent for the US, and that his ball skills are underrated. I don’t see there being any controversy as long as he is healthy unless he has an extended period of poor play (not just riding the bench).
I think the GK position is wide open between Steffen, Turner and Horvath. A lot is predicated on how Steffen and Horvaths loan go. We’re just too far away from November. But unless something drastic happens to Steffen, Horvath and Turner and maybe even Sean Johnson, Gaga is not going to start at the WC, no matter how well he plays over the rest of the MLS season.
Not sure if it's so wide open for Horvath. He'd need to play balls out with Turner and Steffen sinking to have a legit chance.
12-15 injured keepers and Slonina would be in the conversation. https://www.mlssoccer.com/stats/pla...=all&statType=goalkeeping&position=goalkeeper Saving percentage is the only half relevant stats. Clean sheets is a total nonsense invented for baseball fans.
Save percentage isn't that great of a stat either, of course. I played keeper as a kid and I had a great save percentage because I stayed on my line and had stone hands. Not necessarily great keeping.
Looks like the deal is done: Excl: Gaga Slonina to Chelsea, here we go! Agreement with Chicago Fire for $15m, add-ons included. Talented GK and his agent will fly to London on Sunday to complete medical and sign. 🚨🔵🇺🇸 #CFCSlonina will finish the season with Chicago before joining Chelsea on January 1. pic.twitter.com/g2l4Ksbsoj— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) July 30, 2022
Exactly the same as every conversation that goes on here in situations like this. The exact same routine. The same views. No different. It never is anywhere.

Hopefully his hair starts thinning soon. Then we'll know if we have a keeper or not. Sadly given modern hair restoration and the wealth of players our run of bald keepers might be over
The Fire have played twice and he has conceded 6 goals from an xG of about 4. Philly's second was entirely his fault, and he didn't look great on their third either. Should've done better with Charlotte's second a week ago also.
He didn't exactly cover himself in glory with this one. Jack Elliott doubles the lead for @PhilaUnion! pic.twitter.com/bQfvWOFEOr— Major League Soccer (@MLS) August 14, 2022
No big deal. Steffen has done this type of thing his entire career and he will probably start for us in the WC.
He went to tip a similar ball over the bar later in the game but ending up pulling his hands away at the last minute as it was narrowly over the bar. Thought he showed a lot of awareness, growth and maturity there. That's why it is important imo that he keeps playing, because he shows the aptitude and willingness to keep learning. He has also really impressed me as a shop stopper, ton of natural ability. No wonder he is one of the most expensive teenage goalies ever. If he keeps playing I think he is our starter in 2 years.
Brother you said it. He needs to just keep playing. That is a worry when these kids go to these Euro teams of course. He just needs to keep playing. So important. A starting18 year old keeper in MLS is not a bad place to be. I‘m holding my breathe on this one.
Interview: https://www.90min.com/posts/gabriel...ea-transfer-winning-mls-cup-with-chicago-fire The negotiation process for Slonina was a long one and it ultimately took a lot of work from all parties to get the deal over the line. As reported by 90min, the likes of Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Bayern Munich all showed interest, as did clubs from Serie A.
The CIES Football Observatory ranked Gaga Slonina as the second best player in the world born in 2004 or later. 🔥🇺🇸📈#cf97 #usmnt pic.twitter.com/TT0TEb0yR7— Alex Calabrese (@amcalabrese12) September 24, 2022
