I suspect that by the end of the 2022-2023 season, folks are going to be suggesting Tomkinson for a callup. He was literally turned away from the FCD academy as they already had two USYNTers at centerback in his age group. He may turn out to be better than both of them (Both of them are in Germany. Carrera at Holstein Kiel and Che at Hoffenheim).
Tillman goal Malik Tillman rises up high and dunks on the keeper to give Rangers a 3-0 lead (3-2 on aggregate).[🎥: @LeFootballenV16] https://t.co/veXhouGKa8— USMNT Otaku 🇺🇸 (@USMNTOtaku) August 9, 2022 Not a bad debut goal to endear yourself to Rangers fans… MALIK’S GOT BUNNIES 🐰 https://t.co/OUPXo0ccXj— U.S. Soccer Men's National Team (@USMNT) August 9, 2022 Also probably a good sign for Tillman that it was immediately tweeted out by US Soccer… reminder they never posted a video or even mentioned Sargent’s brace in the Premier League… guessing we will see MT in September. (Posting two because some of these have been getting taken down)
holy crap those hops........that was some Ike Opara levels of air. Thats a great aggregate turnaround for Rangers against the Belgian champions. Henry Wingo-less Ferencvaros went down to Qarabag 3-1, so they wont replicate their "almost" story of last year to the champions league group stages. Did he pick up an injury? Is he in the shopping window? Josh Cohen and Haifa lost 2-0 to their opposition but they probably had their foot off the gas pedal after running up the aggregate score 4-0 last time.
Rangers continue to be on a roll in Europe. Impressive result to eliminate the champions of Belgium. Great news for Tillman and Sands.
The SPL is ranked higher than the Belgian Jupiler League in UEFA coefficients. This isn't an upset. Rangers actually should beat USG. Those "Belgian Champions" were pretty weak sauce. USG is a rinky-dink club. Stadium capacity of ~9500. Average attendance that would make ChivasUSA blush. To be fair, European nights at Rangers and Celtic are pretty special. I've heard a lot of players say at European night at Ibrox was the best atmosphere they've ever played in.
I’m somewhat of a cynic but I feel like one of the stipulations for him to choose the USMNT is that he would be on the plane in November (barring injury). However, I dont see him as anything more than a sub given how crowded our midfield is.

Sands made 3 crucial interventions playing last man back in high line for Rangers who won their qualifier for UCL against Belgian champs today. Additionally I liked how he pushed the game in front of him. He isn't boring/"safe" enough for Berhalter which is too bad. He was very alert on his reads. There will be criticism of some nervy passing but this is only a matter of improving consistency (consistency which one gets from p.t., which Berhlater doesn't give him because he isn't consistent....) Sands would have made a great addition as depth for the Adams dmid/3rd cb position, imo. Gio Van Bronckhorst is showing a lot of faith in him. I guess Reyna's godfather got a tip from Claudio who knew Sands from NYCFC. Who knows, maybe Vieira, who also liked him at NYCFC, picks him up eventually for Palace after Sands improves his game at Rangers !!
Awesome goal by Tillman to put Rangers through. They looked dire in first leg but I guess nothing like playing at home.
Sands saved many asses today. Even though Tillman is the MOTM (winning goal), Sands also is right there. Some of our players are pushing hard for tickets right now. Tillman, Sands, Ream, Pefok etc are all in full speed now.
There were a lot of people who not only noted that Tillman looked a bit rusty in June (he did) but also seemed to think he was completely outclassed (he wasn't). He has a ton of talent, and while the position he plays is stacked, it's a 26 man roster on a team that can't seem to stay healthy.
Its a shame Tilman did not have 6 months more at Rangers to get the waste out of his game and add some tools to his belt because he looks like somebody with a good eye for where goals can come from.
It was pretty amusing when some wrote off Tillman based on like two bad plays in his debut, wasn't someone still complaining about him being called up in June just a few days ago? We've got some real Einsteins around here when it comes to talent evaluation... 🏡 Tillman taking it all in.💙 What a night at Ibrox, thank you for your support. pic.twitter.com/JpKc3trgOk— Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) August 9, 2022 USMNT midfielder Malik Tillman emotional post-game after scoring the winner to send Rangers to the next round of Champions League Qualifying. I can tell Rangers fans will love him. https://t.co/BbBRaQUM7g pic.twitter.com/ZGCQ8G2lyN— project mbappe (@starboysfc) August 9, 2022 Under just about every Rangers tweet that mentions Tillman there are scores of fans demanding that Rangers buy Tillman... and I think pretty much every US fan probably hopes that doesn't happen lol Malik Tillman (1 G) vs Union Saint-Gilloise pic.twitter.com/nezLnUNDwq— Jack Stephen 🇺🇸🇮🇳 (@USMNTZ) August 9, 2022 These accounts are really pumping out the comp videos at record speed these days...
To be fair, he has a full 3 months left assuming he is going to Qatar - which is good enough time to polish off a few skills. He is not a finished product yet
Right, he just got there, these are some of the first meaningful games of his career. Which is why I said US fans' hopes are obviously that he not stay with Rangers, but that he ends up on a decent team in a top five league... that's clearly where he belongs and what would be best for him and the USMNT.
psv scored a very similar late equalizer today, difference being there was a cb involved who was completely asleep at the wheel. i dont want to take away from the incredible hops excitement but the keeper didnt get a jump at all. it was more saving an overhit ball than a dominant attack, but a winner is a winner.
Yes, but that is what we do...that is who we are. I have done it, and I am not alone.... A player that hasn't done anything, scores a brace and he should be called up. A player makes a mistake and we should dump him and never call him again...until he scores a brace or goes on a good 3 game run.
Hoppe tomorrow USMNT striker Matthew Hoppe is in England in order to be unveiled as new Middlesbrough player. Deal was signed on Tuesday and medical also completed - done and sealed. 🔴🇺🇸 #BoroOfficial statement now expected on Wednesday. pic.twitter.com/Oa6KU4Ys3G— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 10, 2022
If anyone can play like a house on fire out of the gate, it's Hoppe. He's still an outside shot at making the squad but of the plethora of options outside Ferreira, Pefok, Vasquez, and Pepi, Hoppe's the one most likely to do so especially if one of the wingers is unavailable too.
You never know. With a few injuries here and there, we might even need him for what he does and not worry all that much about what's missing. McK and Reyna could both be out. If Aaronson were to catch a virus, who exactly would be as good a creator and scorer anyway? Pulisic can't do it all. It's not far fetched to think Malik could punch his ticket.
Now the real competitions start: 1. MLS—Ferreira, Vasquez and Zardes (in the theory, he can score hat tricks for 3-4 weeks to bypass Vasquez, LOL) 2. Bundesliga — Pepi and Pefok 3. English Championships— Sargent, Dike (maybe done) and Hoppe.
He can and has played striker as well in Germany, I know Berhalter thinks he's a CM/WF, but he can play striker, without question, at least at the youth level. Double checking, and yep, transfermarkt lists 109 or so appearances the past five years at various levels and 29 of them were as striker (21 goals), and 6 of them were as 2nd forward. He also logged 57 games as an AM/CM, and an additional 17 games as a Right or Left Wing or Mid. So he's definitely played more midfield than anything, but it's not like he lacks experience as a striker, basically more than 1/3 of his career has been as a striker or a second forward. Considering our woes at striker, I don't see the issue w/rolling him out there, 24 goals in 35 games as a forward aint half bad, even if it was at rinky dink levels in most cases.
