Shouldn't matter whether it's the defense or not - a corner in the air is essentially a contested ball. With the way that TT moved I wouldn't call it a "little shove" even if we can wring hands about him being 5'7" and 140 pounds. If TT had gone to ground - and he stumbled a bit as it was, most likely the foul would have been called. That's usually what it takes to get a foul called on a set piece like that. Either that, or the goal scorer did the shoving or the guy who might have otherwise scored got shoved. Those are the things that are usually required to get the ref's attention so that he/she calls those fouls on set pieces.

I'm not arguing whether or not MLS will call these fouls. I'm arguing that it's a foul.

Vote for Paul Marie for GOTW. He has a chance to win!

The summary you've all been waiting for:
Two cool goals plus one fortuitous goal plus strangely lethargic Austin second half equaled a welcome away point against a favored team.

What was Austin dong? Trying just to sit on its 3-2 lead?

Great shot by Paul Marie for goal number 2. I confess to being a fan of shots from soccer's analog to the 3-point line, i.e., outside the penalty area. I think players should work more on developing the skill and reading the opportunities.

Exquisite combination of service from Spinoza and timing of leap by Ebobisse for goal number 3. 'taint often either of them gets it as right as they both did, and it was a pleasure to watch again and again.

All that to make up for play that at times seemed like no one knew who was supposed to be doing what.

Still remember 45 years on the Kaiser scoring a similar goal to Marie’s, for the Cosmos at the Meadowlands.

Short and to the point, with zingers applied equally to both teams. I think the Quake deserve at least a little credit for keeping Austin from adding to their lead in the 2nd half.

The last few years with the Quake I often found that the only joy to be had was to root for a Wondo goal. That way, (with lowered expectations) there was always something to make the game worthwhile. This year I have been doing the same thing except now my guy is Jebo. The game was worth it for me when he got #13. Ten games to go, maybe he can get 16? Classy guy, deserves much more, I am hoping he will be able to get enough service to keep it up.

Bale's goal was pedestrian in comparison.

Mostly the result of bad / dumb defending.

Looks like the overnight numbers favored Bale (probably got a small boost from Europeans).

Paul Marie's goal was much more awe inspiring, but Bale's goal was some nice work through horrific defending. I kind of wish goal of the week stuff was voted on by soccer writers or by the players or something, but it's also on of those things that really doesn't matter at all so it's not really important who wins it.

I have to say I was surprised by the result of the game. I thought, for sure, Austin would destroy San Jose and they really should have. But I'm glad the Quakes managed to find their scoring form again. After failing to score at home, I feared the team would implode and we'd see some really lopsided results, but that did not happen...yet.

I feel confident that Marie's goal was a fluke, but it was a beautiful one. Ebobisse's goal was exactly the type of goal he's been scoring this season, and was great. Kikanovic's goal was a bit fortuitous, but hey, those kinds of breaks happen for you when you're pressing in the box and actually willing to shoot. Hopefully that lesson will stick with the Quakes for the remainder of the season.

The defending was atrocious yet again, but it's hardly worth pointing out at this point as it's the same every game.

Watched the game last night. Fun game to watch in general (at least the first half). PM went from GOTY Candidate to almost Goat of the Game with the stupid foul towards the end of the game. Amazing cross by Esponiza on the third goal. He was my MOTM for the Quakes. Benji had a better game than the past 2-3 games, but otherwise, kind of more of the same.

Judson seems to be a shell of his former self. He seems to have lost a step and is always arriving late. Had a chance to get goal side on the third goal, but didn't make the effort. Still better than Remedi.

Beason and Yuell were fighting for the worst player of the game. I really don't want to see either of them starting at this point. At times, Yuell seemed to be the effort, and at other times, he was just floating with no care in the world. Totally agree with Danielle's in game comment about his speed of play and lack of aggressiveness. Beason is simply not starting material in this league.

TT is TT. He is good moving forward, but is suspect in defense and in the air. Need better in that right back position.

Bersano was average. He made one or two nice stops, but his foot work on the first goal (ended up in the goal) and decision making showed his lack of experience. JT should not be worried about him taking his spot.

While the subs were 10-15 minutes late, they actually did well (even Gregus) this game.

That's pretty harsh on Bersano but I do agree he's not going to supplant Marcinkowski. For one, he's four years older. But I don't think he bears much responsibility for the goals against. He's playing behind the worst defense in the league and has had very little time with the first team.

Grey Goose is cooked I think, unfortunately. Too bad, seems like a good guy, but Covelo just doesn't seem to feel like the team needs Goose all that often, and I think he's right. I think his contract was just for this year and I doubt he would be re-signed. Maybe a good time for him to return to Europe for the twilight of his career. He's 31.

Not really. On the first goal, he should know that his corner defense is suspect and come out to punch any ball in the goal box area. Second goal was no chance. On the third goal, my wife (who played GK) commented that he didn't get up quick enough. A little harsh and Judson was primarily at fault for his coverage and slide.

Also, is average harsh? Are you saying he played well?

Saying he was average isn't harsh, but I wouldn't have even bothered to comment on his play at all, initially. Marcinkowski has shown to make plenty of mistakes as well, so I consider it a wash in who plays back there so long as the defense in front of the keeper is what it is. To put it another way, I don't know that the outcome of the game would have been any different were Marcinkowski in goal in that game. Maybe he would have. His blocking numbers are very good considering he's facing so many shots this season. Bersano has had so little first team minutes during his time with the Quakes that I wouldn't put much stock in what we do get from him yet, unfortunately. We just don't have much to go off of.
