TheCup.us @usopencup Jun 19 National Amateur Cup: Northern Virginia FC defeated Newtown Pride FC (CT), 2-2 (5:4 in pks) to win the #USASA Region I Amateur Cup last night. NoVa will join Beaman FC (TN) in Chicago, IL for the national finals on August 5-6. The other regional champs are TBD.
Thank you for this. As a result, it led me to poking around and discovering that Round Rock has a team that's been in USL2 since 2020!
Lamar Hunt US Open Cup - TheCup.us BREAKING National Amateur Cup Update: USASA Region III Amateur Cup champion Beaman United FC (TN) has been disqualified from national contention. Runner-up ASC New Stars (TX) will move on to August's national finals in Chicago. It was found that players on Beaman United maintained professional status while competing in the amateur cup. Following an appeal, this has been confirmed by U.S. Soccer. ASC New Stars will now compete for it's 2nd ever #USOpenCup berth. Read up on that here: https://thecup.us/.../2011-meet-the-usasa-asc-new-stars.../

The U.S. Open Cup Open Division handbook and overall schedule are out for 2023: https://www.ussoccer.com/2023-open-...2K5ppDOguilKrIV9avqN0t1rTytVusELFYcZ78mh30buo 2023 Qualifying Tournament First Round - September 17-18, 2022 Second Round - October 15-16, 2022 Third Round - November 19-20, 2022 Fourth Round - December 17-18, 2022 2023 U.S. Open Cup First Round: March 21-23 = Amateur teams enter Second Round: April 4-6 = Division II teams enter Third Round: April 18-19 - most Division I teams enter Round of 32: May 9-10 - Seeded Division 1 teams enter Round of 16: May 23-24 Quarterfinals: June 6 Semifinals: August 23 Final: September 27 Round of entry for Division III teams will be determined by total number of teams qualified. Seeded teams are CCL entrants and next best based on MLS 2022 East (2) and West (2) standings. Specific games can be held outside the scheduled dates with approval by Tournament Commissioner.
Let's look at possible numbers in the pro division for 2023. MLS: 25 eligible teams now + St. Louis in 2023 = 26 USL-C: 23 eligible teams now + OKC and Queensboro in 2023 = 25 USL-1: 11 eligible teams now + Lexington and Spokane in 2023 = 13 MLS-NP: Rochester is the only one we know of now = 1 NISA: 9/10 eligible teams now + ? in 2023 = 10 or 12, maybe That's around 75-77 pro teams. If we work backward: Round of 32: 8 MLS seeds + 24 winners 3rd Round: 18 MLS teams + 30 winners 2nd Round: 25 USLC teams + 35 winners 1st Round: 13 USL1 + 1 MLSNP + 12 NISA + 44 Open Division teams That could be a total of 121 teams in the tournament. Obviously if they have some DIII teams start in the 2nd round that changes the number of Open Division teams. Anyone have other numbers?
2022 tournament: 103 teams total, 71 pro division 2021: 102 total, 65 pro CANCELLED 2020: 100 total, 62 pro CANCELLED 2019: 84 total, 52 pro 2018: 97 total, 42 pro 2017: 99 total, 43 pro Things really jumped in the last couple of years as far as pro teams.
An interesting consequence if Sacramento wins the 2022 Open Cup. Commissioner sent us a message, so we have to make a small correction. If @SacRepublicFC does win the cup on September 7, they would qualify for @TheChampions and thus be one of the seeded teams, getting slotted 2 rounds ahead of the rest of the @USLChampionship teams next year. https://t.co/prMZ3PHI5s— TheCup.us (@usopencup) July 29, 2022 If that happens, then the round by round breakdown could look like this: Round of 32: 7 MLS + Sacramento seeds + 24 winners 3rd Round: 19 MLS teams + 29 winners 2nd Round: 25 USLC teams + 33 winners 1st Round: 13 USL1 + 1 MLSNP + 12 NISA + 42 Open Division teams That could be a total of 119 teams in the tournament. Obviously if they have some DIII teams start in the 2nd round that changes the number of Open Division teams. So Sacramento could possibly knock out a couple of Open Division teams. If they win the Cup. We'll see what happens.
Lamar Hunt US Open Cup - TheCup.us update for National Premier Soccer League for #USOC2023. We are expecting the league to receive 8 slots for the cup, but should the league receive fewer slots, this is the order the teams would be invited to the competition. 1. FC Motown / Crossfire Premier Soccer winner (national champion) 2. FC Motown / Crossfire Premier Soccer loser (national runner-up) 3. Muskegon Risers (national semifinalist, 2.6 PPG) 4. Tulsa Athletic (national semifinalist, 2.42 PPG) 5. Jacksonville Armada FC U-23 (regional finalist, 2.83 PPG) 6. El Farolito Academy (regional finalist, 2.4 PPG) 7. Appalachian FC (regional finalist, 2.1 PPG) 8. Cleveland SC (regional finalist, 2.08 PPG) Should any of these teams decline their invitation or become ineligible to take it, they would be replaced by the next best team in regular season points per game in their region. The full regional rankings can be found here: https://thecup.us/.../2023-us-open-cup-which-npsl-teams.../

I didn't take the time to break this down yesterday. There are 21 matchups in the first round for the East and 23 teams on bye so after the first round it will be down to 44 teams. The West has 14 first round games and 14 teams on bye for a total of 28 left after the first round. The 2nd and 3rd round will get us down to 18 teams left after the 3rd round: 11 East and 7 West. I guess the regions will sort of go away for the 4th round and they'll match teams up as geographically as they can at that point to get to 9 finalists. Looking at the map that might be a team from Texas meeting up with a team from the Midwest or Southeast. We shall see.
