Since Keizer, in my opinion, deserves a place in this top XI, that is the only, minimal, variation to the position each player occupied that season. Banks; Vogts, Beckenbauer, McLintock, Cooper; Pastoriza, Netzer, Mazzola; Best, Cruyff, Keizer.

I forgot to delete Krol from joint 11th, so this is the correct version below: 1978 Ballon d'Or Revisited Big Soccer panel consensus 1 Mario Kempes (Argentina/Valencia) - 102 2 Rob Rensenbrink (Netherlands/Anderlecht) - 49 3 Kenny Dalglish (Scotland/Liverpool) - 24 4 Paolo Rossi (Italy/Vicenza) - 23 5 Daniel Passarella (Argentina/River Plate) - 14 6 Hans Krankl (Austria/Rapid Vienna/Barcelona) - 11 7 Kevin Keegan (England/Hamburg) - 7 8 Johan Cruyff (Netherlands/Barcelona/New York Cosmos/LA Aztecs) - 6 9 Ruud Krol (Netherlands/Ajax) - 5 10 Michel Platini (France/Nancy) - 4 11 Peter Shilton (England/Nottingham Forest) - 3 12 Roberto Bettega (Italy/Juventus) - 2 13 Teofilo Cubillas (Peru/Alianza Lima), Dirceu (Brazil/Vasco da Gama/Club America), Johnny Rep (Netherlands/Bastia) - 1 I'll get started on the 80s sometime later today probably, including Lasha's votes he just posted too....
Correction on this one too, as I'd given Breitner the 3rd place points that should have gone to Schuster for one vote (Breitner gets them for the 1981 vote): 1980 Ballon d'Or Revisited Big Soccer panel consensus 1 Diego Maradona (Argentina/Argentinos Juniors) - 80 2 Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (W.Germany/Bayern Munich) - 70.5 3 Zico (Brazil/Flamengo) - 44.5 4 Bernd Schuster (W.Germany/Cologne/Barcelona) - 15 5 Michel Platini (France/St Etienne) - 10 6 Jan Ceulemans (Belgium/Club Brugge) - 9 7 Waldemar Victorino (Uruguay/Nacional) - 3 8 Paul Breitner (W.Germany/Bayern Munich), Toninho Cerezo (Brazil/Atletico Mineiro), Kenny Dalglish (Scotland/Liverpool) - 2 11 Paulo Roberto Falcao (Brazil/Internacional/Roma), Socrates (Brazil/Corinthians) - 1

Four votes have no 4th or 5th places awarded, and another has no 5th place awarded. One vote has two players allocated 5 points each for joint 1st place, and three players allocated a point each, sharing the points available for 4th/5th. Zico, in Golden Ball position, has twelve outright 1st place votes, and a shared 1st place too. Rummenigge in Silver Ball position has two 1st place votes, and Maradona in Bronze Ball position has one plus a share of another. Four votes have no 4th or 5th places awarded. Zico is again in Golden Ball position, with twelve 1st place votes. Despite Falcao being in Silver Ball position (receiving a 2nd place vote eight times, so from half of the voters), the other 1st place votes are shared, two each, between Bronze Ball positioned Rossi, and Rummenigge the 4th placed player in the standings as things are now.
I don't think I'd added any analysis on this one so I'll do that now too: Five votes contained no 4th or 5th placings (one of them had two players tied in 2nd/3rd), and another had no 5th placing. Maradona, in Golden Ball position, has nine of the 1st place votes. Rummenigge in Silver Ball position has six of them, and Zico in Bronze Ball position has the other one.

1983 Ballon d'Or Revisited Big Soccer panel consensus 1 Michel Platini (France/Juventus) - 84 2 Zico (Brazil/Flamengo/Udinese) - 54 3 Paulo Roberto Falcao (Brazil/Roma) - 51 4 Socrates (Brazil/Corinthians) - 21 5 Kenny Dalglish (Scotland/Liverpool) - 20 6 Felix Magath (W.Germany/Hamburg), Diego Maradona (Argentina/Barcelona) - 4 8 Renato Gaucho (Brazil/Gremio), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (W.Germany/Bayern Munich) - 2 10 Bryan Robson (England/Manchester United) - 1 Four votes had no 4th or 5th places allocated, and another vote had no 4th place allocated. One vote has three players sharing a point each from the points available for 4th/5th. Platini, in Golden Ball position, has ten 1st place votes. Zico in Silver Ball position, and Falcao close behind him in Bronze Ball position, both have three 1st place votes.
I don't know a lot really, but probably Hamm could win some more in the previous century I'm thinking. I read some suggestions Harder might have been hard done by (no pun intended) in recent votes I think (maybe that she'd have won the Ballon d'Or vote in 2020 a la Lewandowski on the men's side too), but I'm not sure how widespread those opinions would be.
And another question that bothered me too, I am addressing myself especially to specialists of ancient times (@peterhrt @elegos7 @Ariaga II @Tom Stevens ) but do you know well-known players who could have been the best of their time, before the first years of "modern soccer" (I mean before the 1869-1870 season) ? I know that for example soccer had started to exist among the Greeks and then among the Romans, and before knowing it as we know it today. I do not know if there were players in the 1840s, 1850s or 1860, who could have claimed these titles, by example. Anyway, I thank you in advance. Best, IceBlood34.
1984 Ballon d'Or Revisited Big Soccer panel consensus 1 Michel Platini (France/Juventus) - 96 2 Jean Tigana (France/Bordeaux) - 42 3 Ian Rush (Wales/Liverpool) - 33 4 Zico (Brazil/Udinese) - 22 5 Preben Elkjaer (Denmark/Lokeren/Verona) - 12 6 Paulo Roberto Falcao (Brazil/Roma), Enzo Francescoli (Uruguay/River Plate) - 11 8 Alain Giresse (France/Bordeaux) - 7 9 Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (W.Germany/Bayern Munich) - 3 10 Fernando Chalana (Portugal/Benfica/Bordeaux), Graeme Souness (Scotland/Liverpool/Sampdoria) - 2 12 Johan Cruyff (Netherlands/Feyenoord), Romerito (Paraguay/Fluminense) - 1 Four votes have no 4th or 5th places awarded, and another vote has no 5th place awarded. One vote has three players sharing 2 points each for 3rd-5th. Platini, with a big lead in Golden Ball position, has the maximum 96 points from the available votes, with all sixteen 1st places. Tigana is in Silver Ball position and has four of the 2nd place votes, the same as Zico, while Rush in Bronze Ball position has five of those.
1985 Ballon d'Or Revisited Big Soccer panel consensus 1 Michel Platini (France/Juventus) - 92 2 Diego Maradona (Argentina/Napoli) - 64 3 Preben Elkjaer (Denmark/Verona) - 44 4 Bernd Schuster (W.Germany/Barcelona) - 20 5 Zbigniew Boniek (Poland/Juventus/Roma), Claudio Borghi (Argentina/Argentinos Juniors) - 7 7 Hans-Peter Briegel (W.Germany/Verona), Junior (Brazil/Torino) - 3 9 Rinat Dasaev (Soviet Union/Spartak Moscow), Ian Rush (Wales/Liverpool), Rudi Voller (W.Germany/Werder Bremen) - 1 Four votes have no 4th or 5th places awarded, and one other vote has no 5th place awarded. Platini is in Golden Ball position after receiving fourteen 1st place votes, while Silver Ball positioned Maradona received the other two and is 20 points ahead of Bronze Ball positioned Elkjaer as things stand.
1986 Ballon d'Or Revisited Big Soccer panel consensus 1 Diego Maradona (Argentina/Napoli) - 96 2 Gary Lineker (England/Everton/Barcelona) - 44 3 Igor Belanov (Soviet Union/Dynamo Kyiv) - 31 4 Emilio Butragueno (Spain/Real Madrid) - 15 5 Careca (Brazil/Sao Paulo) - 14 6 Michel Platini (France/Juventus) - 11 7 Jorge Burruchaga (Argentina/Nantes) - 7 8 Preben Elkjaer (Denmark/Verona), Ruud Gullit (Netherlands/PSV Eindhoven) - 6 10 Michael Laudrup (Denmark/Juventus), Jorge Valdano (Argentina/Real Madrid) - 4 12 Antonio Alzamendi (Uruguay/Penarol/River Plate) - 3 13 Marco van Basten (Netherlands/Ajax) - 2 14 Enzo Francescoli (Uruguay/River Plate/Racing Club de Paris) - 1 Four votes have no 4th or 5th places awarded. One vote has three players receiving a point each from the points available for 4th/5th. Maradona has received maximum points and sixteen 1st place votes, and is in Golden Ball position therefore. Lineker, with seven 2nd place votes, is in Silver Ball position, and Belanov in Bronze Ball position has taken the 2nd place vote four times.
