Honestly I don't like debating over either. Acosta is a lock because of Berhalter. Roldan would be if not for Acosta. Neither are what we need to get better. They're place holders.
Delgado’s time is probably past, unfortunately, but if he doesn’t want it to be he should leave MLS and go somewhere else. I think he could be very successful in Europe with his skill set and if you can’t break into the NT as a really good MLS player you have to go where you can’t be ignored.
Marco is probably not getting his chance with Gregg. He is the kind of guy, IMO, who should have been in B Gold Cups and even in WCQ would have been able to provide some help but alas.
Wasn’t trying to imply you said he never had a bad game. Sorry if it came out that way. Was just commenting on what I think is an obvious fact. I do think, however one bad game is often treated differently for different players…for many different reasons
Based on his play since over a month before he had left Dallas, Pepi isn't even in the top-3. He had 1 big and very crucial WCQing window for us. But his performances have dropped off a precipice. Maybe he picks it up. Is he even the best US eligible striker on his team?
Good play? I like Roldan. And the team tactics seem to be evolving in such a way that better utilizes his skillset. But Vazquez has the clearer path to minutes. What can Roldan do to move beyond being a vibes guy?

I'm poking fun of the fact that everyone in MLS who puts in a few good months is more exciting than old Cristian, who's a key player on the team that wins stuff. As for the vibes thing, I don't think there's anything he can do realistically to get more pt. When dominating CCL didn't get him a kick in WCQ I gave up on Gregg using him.
I get it. All I'm saying is that UNTIL some other guy really excels with the USMNT and takes his place, Pepi's in one of the three spots. Gregg gave Wright a chance to win a spot at the last camp, and apparently that didn't work out. The same think could happen to Vasquez. Let's not predetermine success. I actually think Ferreira is in the best position, and the other two slots are fairly open. Vasquez has earned an opportunity in September to win on of those slots. Is it possible that Pefok, Dike, or somebody else takes Pepi's spot away from him? Sure is. But for the moment I have Pepi penciled in (with Jesus and Pefok). We'll have to see who is being given a shot based on September callups. Cuz if Gregg wants to really vet Vasquez, it'll be difficult to also give a player like Dike time to make an impact. ...........................if the purpose of the camp is to "gel" the team going to the WC anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if the camp is Ferreira, Pepi, and Vasquez. Berhalter isn't the type to take like 6 #9s to camp and have a free-for-all competition. That hasn't been his style.
He might work with a lineup that includes Pulisic or Reyna or both because both like to have the ball at their feet to create rather than run behind like it seems Vazquez prefers.
LOL they used Transfermarkt Interesting report here regarding Brandon Vazquez. Chivas apparently approached FC Cincinnati about Vazquez based on Transfermarkt's $550K valuation of the player. FC Cincinnati asked for $5 million, which caught Chivas completely by surprise. https://t.co/CDjxUIzOFM— Felipe Cárdenas (@FelipeCar) August 5, 2022 dear god, chivas, come on https://t.co/JiAQzpq1pn— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) August 5, 2022 Just shocking how badly run some clubs are. https://t.co/NYHZk4RAgp— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) August 5, 2022 If the idiotic valuation of some creepy German dude up in Vancouver is what keeps Brandon Vazquez from joining Chivas where he would have declined future USMNT callups having not yet been capped because Berhalter was too stupid to call him up for the four games in June...
For better or worse, Transfermarkt is ubiquitous these days. I have no doubt their values are anchoring plenty of actual offers and negotiations in the real world.
Looks like Transfermarkt has held Brandon Vazquez' value pretty steady at around $500-550k from October 2019 to November 2021... of course he's one goal off the golden boot in the 2022 season so valuations from 2021 are a bit outdated. https://www.transfermarkt.us/brandon-vazquez/profil/spieler/389255
There was an article in the New York Times awhile back where it talked about how clubs do often use it as a starting point for discussions. It’s of course an imperfect measure, but they do try and make a good faith effort at it. In the case of Vazquez I believe they haven’t updated the MLS valuations in a bit so it’s not surprising his would be lower than it is in reality. Of course Chivas should be smart enough to know that.
It's also used by 538 for their club rankings. So we have a nice clear example about a key weakness in that index.
Transfermarkt is slow to update their valuation when a player breaks out like Vazquez has. The system has utility, but should be used w/ context, like newness of the player, and yrs remaining on existing contract; applied. Common sense says a 23 yr old CF who is near leading a decent league in scoring has up his valuation into the millions at least in today's market. Transfermarkt uses some insider info, and then subjective evaluation. It's an inexact science, and hard for people to manage all those names. Is there an AI that does it, proportionate on league ranking, production, metrics, etc.? That would be useful as another tool. The more tools you have at your disposal, the more accurate the info, and better of a decision you can make.
I'd disagree with him not been quick in small spaces, his feet are very quick, unusually quick for a big guy, and that's where his scoring ability comes from as well: keepers are consistently late to react.
Interesting idea. You feed that AI engine all the games ever played, then for every particular player you are getting optimal position, and ceiling.
Thankfully the bulk of the data in 538 is what happens on the field. They do market adjustments with TM data (which I personally hate) but that has diminishing impact for each game week after the start of the season. The bigger underlying issue is their xG model which is a bit opaque, totally in house, and wildly divergent from a lot of other models.
Question, is Julian Gressel eligible to be selected to a competitive international game for the US yet? Second question, should he be talked about? I understand he just got traded, but in my own assessment he’s a good crosser of the ball from the wingback position.
