Also, the other teams advance even further in 5 years and we will still be catching up after 5 years.
That would makes sense but I sincerely don't think that's the plan. Any plan that involves spending big bucks on DPs is not the Quakes plan. I read "win MLS cup in 2026 by using academy kids" as "we're not going to spend big on DPs". I hope I'm wrong because I don't think we will win anything without taking advantage of the DP rule. It's probably the most powerful rule in the book.
Back when I had a Peacock subscription I watched the Brazilian league and picked Gremio as my team to follow. I can't say I know who this guy is but I'm just excited we might be getting someone from my Brazil team! I'm actually happier about this than if we got John Brooks.
I just want to see good players - don't care where they come from as long as they give us a real advantage to win and are fun to watch. I wouldn't mind seeing a Liverpool player
Oh man, looks like Gremio was relegated to Serie B since the last time I watched the league. Ouch. They either need to make it back to A or I need to pick another team to follow in Brazil (I don't think peacock even shows the b league). This relegation stuff is brutal.
Read up on him, sounds positive. Sassuolo from Italy almost bought him I believe late last yr. If a Sería A team saw something in him, then he can't be to bad. Good age and has about 60 games for Gremio.
So we have to wait until 2026? Are they kidding or what? That means we have to suffer for 3 more years? I'll be watching from Santa Clara memorial!
Our DPs are other team's TAM players. I'm not sure which we underutilize for player acquisition -- DP or TAM. There's also the U-22 initiative, which we haven't used at all. (Lopez was U22 in name only, as he was already here when the rule was implemented, and now he's gone anyway.) The other form of spending I would guess we also don't use is the grey area under the table compensation. Fisher must have a spare penthouse suite at the Fairmont, plus helicopter transportation to Paypal, that he could throw in.
We'll be good by "two World Cups from now" And of course whatever "competitive" target the Quakes are trying to hit by 2026 will have changed substantially in the meantime given the trajectory of MLS... So will the Quakes be competitive with 2022 MLS teams by 2026, or competitive with actual 2026 MLS teams? I would really like you to ask your friend that question!! And here in 2022, in addition to teams making big DP signings, LAFC just added Gareth Bale from Real Madrid and Giorgio Chiellini from Juventus, LA Galaxy just added Riqui Puig from Barcelona, and Cincy just added Matt Miazga, all NOT on DP deals!
LAFC just signed Bale and Chilleini on TAM, and Galaxy got Riqui Puig on TAM. Leitch needs to see how they're structuring these deals.
I don't agree with this line of thought. Players like Ebobisse, Monteiro, and Nathan are good enough to play under a variety of coaches and systems. We don't need a coach to give input on players of that quality.
An all-Brazilian CB pairing of Nathan and Rodrigues... Tommy Thompson better start learning Portuguese! Gremio are a pretty big club in Brazil but they were just relegated, so maybe they have to dump players to reduce payroll...
What do you mean getting "caught out"? He's cut so much deadwood Friends of Matias, we should have enough cap room to work with, we should even have a DP spot open since Gregus should be TAM eligible(if he isn't that's a pretty bad move by Leitch). There are tons of professional soccer players that are fit whatever criteria he's looking for. If he can't find the "right player" that's his fault, not him being smart. I would argue that almost any move he makes to improve the team now would "help us next year" (unless he signs a 34 year old on his last legs which no one is advocating). I wonder if any of the other GMs of struggling clubs have thought of Leitch's strategy of "don't sign anyone" since they may or may not be bad players
i didn’t say all the players were bandaids. We took a chance on Jebo, Montiero and Nathan. I didn’t view any of them as stone cold locks coming in based on their previous performance. So far so good with Jebo…he hit his career best in goals…hopefully he continues to develop his game…but he might not be every coaches cup of tea at the 9. The same could be said about Montiero. I’m not a fan of his game at ACM…I think he is just passable..nowhere near what we need there as an attacker. Nathan has been our best defender and generally plays well. But he doesn’t exactly have a ton of competition. He takes a lot of risks as a CB…we’re a bad team. Other coaches might not want that level of risk in their back lines in tighter meaningful games. I guess it is all relative to where you want to be competitively. What certain coaches value in players…who they think can take them to the top level in the league and compete for championships. Imo, we don’t have any players that would be a consensus pick by coaches…someone that any coach would find a lock to bring them to a top position in the league.
What I was responding to was the "CL isn’t moving too fast picking up players because" part, I was not meaning to imply that Jebo, Montiero and Nathan were bandaids (if I am reading the bolded part of your comment right. I would say that those three and a few others (JT, Judson, Benji, Espinoza at least) a coach would want to keep with a much more realistic target of making the playoffs (instead of a top position). The "lock" for "top position" is too strong criteria IMO. RSL has 3-4 guys total I would say are "any coach would find a lock to bring them to a top position in the league." and they are in a playoff spot right now.
Yep. I will add that it goes back to system versus player coaches. Some coaches play a set system and have players in mind to play that system. Other coaches will start with a system and adjust according to the players. However, if you follow the A's method of player evaluation, you don't need a coach. It's all metrics and they get told which players to play. Right? Remind me again who owns the A's?
