Brandon Vazquez's USMNT case grows during MLS Golden Boot challenge

Someone at MLS HQ needs to make a comp video of Brandon Vazquez over the last two years because clearly most people have not been paying attention...

Of course a lot won't but there's no sure things in our forwards that any of us can say for absolute sure which three are the best to be taken. It's basically cross your fingers and anyone who says differently is just there for conflict.

I mean.......................people have spent the last 4 years DEMANDING Berhalter call up a long series of forwards.
He's called them all in, and none have impressed on a consistent basis.
There's a never-ending forward "Flavor of the Month."

The last was Haji Wright,. After one camp the board seem to have forgotten that he even exists. He went from being on a lot of projected rosters to none of them in the space of a month.

So Vasquez is playing well for Cincinnati. That's great. But let's see how he does on the USMNT. Cuz we've had this same discussion about everybody else for 4 years.

In 2022, how many #9s have scored goals? Ferreira with 5. And.........................Wright with a penalty. That's it for the #9s. Morris scored, but I believe was playing on the wing at the time.

So I don't know who can be adamant about anything. By the way, 4 of Ferreira's 5 goals in 2022 came against Grenada. So we can throw that factoid into the fire. Of his other 3 career USMNT goals, 2 came in the 7-0 blowout of T&T. Only one goal in a game that mattered. The third goal in our 5-1 demolition of Panama in a WCQer.

if forwards aren't scoring it may be more important to go back and compare how well other players scored when they were in there. That or a dart board.

I pretty much agree with this. I don’t think we have a single striker who has distinguished themselves as being particularly good in a Berhalter system.

To me, any 3 of Dike, Pefok, Haji, Ferreira, Vazquez, or Ebobisse will be just fine. I’d like Vazquez and Ebobisse to get some reps prior to Qatar if they’re going to be there.

I'm really excited to see BV this weekend against the best defense in the MLS. I am a Union homer but I would not be surprised if the Union's defense is better than what he would see from Wales or Iran. I haven't had a chance to see a FC Cincinnati game this year, so all I've really seen is highlights, but he looks like he could be a difference maker for us as a poacher and in hold-up play.

    One week ago...
The Vazquez hype train seems to be adding people with each week...

Good to see highlights from before 2022 starting to surface in response to all the "Vazquez has only done well for one season" nonsense...

    Interesting Vazquez vs Ferreira comparison...

Creates attacking depth in a way that Ferreira really doesn't.

Also, this is important: Vazquez has drawn 35 fouls this year. Ferreira's drawn 7.

Set pieces are so important in any context, but *especially* in tournament play. Just look at France in 2018.

Will be interested to see what response Vazquez-doubters have to all that...

I watched the second half of Montreal - NYC yesterday. Considering Montreal gave NYC no time to build from the back Sean Johnson's distribution was pretty good

I think fouls drawn are very useful. Be even more useful if we had anyone who could take free kicks (McGlynn?). I doubt anyone here is a Vasquez doubter. Probably more like a Vasquez hopeful but after having seen every other forward be just OK at best we're all skeptical of any of them.

Pepi was outstanding for one window. It's encouraging that BV is 23 and had been grinding and scoring in limited minutes before this year's breakout. He's been through the growing pains players like Hoppe, Sargent, and Pepi are still going through.

Sure he scores and holds up and distributes, but can he press?

I would say he scores and presses. His hold up ability is solid. Distribution more questionable, imo.

I think with Vazquez there's a lot to like about his game and his style is exactly what we need from a 9. The bigger question is whether what he's doing in MLS will translate internationally. It's worth a call up in September to find out, but he may or may not be ready.

If John Brooks leads the Quakes to the MLS playoffs he's on the plane to Qatar... if the Quakes actually get a home playoff game he's starting vs Wales.

It will be interesting to see how he does on the same league where most of his national team competition plays.

Ferreira is not an out-and-out #9, more à withdrawn #10.
Meanwhile Vazquez has kind of #9 body type I like — such as Darwin Nunez or Dusan Vlahovic etc.

I briefly met Brandon back in May and he’s built almost exactly like one of my favorite Nats of all time, Brian Ching.

Oddly enough, I’ve met Brian, too. He was in Hawaii when my unit pulled in to port after my 2nd deployment overseas. Came out to an event we had and couldn’t have been a nicer guy. I’m guessing he was 6’2” and Brandon was about the same. Ching definitely was a superior 9 in the air, but Brandon has slightly better feet and speed.

If GGG insists on keeping Weah on the wing, Vazquez or Reyna would be my preferred #9. Leave Ferreira, Pepi, Dike, Pefok, Wright and all the other subpar guys at home.

With a 26 man roster, if Berhalter wanted to bring McGlynn strictly as a set piece option down a goal with 25 minutes left, that wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world. If the roster was 23, I’d say no way. But having a good dead-ball taker in the squad would not be a waste of one of those roster spots.

Given I’m still recovering from Covid, I may have to find some recent FC Cincinnati games to watch Vazquez. As I was flipping through games Saturday night, I certainly stopped on the FCC-Miami game a few times……

    So Cal
In the little I’ve seen him, he makes me think of Ching.

not committed to leaving anyone home at this point. Too many question marks and no clear answers

I shake Brian’s hand when NAT played in Stanford and I was there for some business.
