Exactly, it's like people have their 'opinion' ready to ventilate depending on the game that the player they don't like has. One bad game? Sell! A good game? But he misplaced a pass! An excellent game? A fluke, player X should play instead. Etc. Etc. Some people need to understand the concept of preseason and, more importantly, learn to put things into perspective. Oh well...

Mendy not helping in attack is a carry over from last season(s) When Alaba plays it’s a much more dynamic attack. Mendys off ball movement is horrible in the attacking 3rd. Last night it’s still apparent. This is not an overreaction based on a few minutes against a garbage Juve team.

Over and over and over again, it's pretty boring.

It's like you never watch us play, your post was again the old line about not helping past the halfway line, but the facts don't help you, when Mendy plays we more often than not win, you will probably claim that it's nothing to do with him but, meh, would we all like Mendy to play like Marcelo, yes we would when we have the ball, but he's not Marcelo, what he is though is far far more solid at LB than Marcelo, (one of my favourite players ever), off the ball, that's still a positive at Madrid IMO.

Vin has had his absolute best season ever playing with Mendy behind him so he doesn't have to do too much tracking back, that is also a fact, he doesn't seem to be struggling to me, maybe you believe he'll score 30 goals with a more "dynamic" LB, new things always "seem" more interesting, if you bothered to watch us play and not just look for mistakes from the players on the team that you don't like or that don't play the way that you'd like them to you'd see that whenever we move the ball forward more often than not Toni comes outside to the left and Mendy makes the run inside ( over the halfway line mind you) over and over again, it happens every game all game long, clearly a plan that is followed re his movement, he's never found there though everyone looks for Vin, and i'm not surprised.

Finally Vin likes to dribble, i cannot say this enough, even when others make runs to support him he likes to take players on, if that supporting player isn't Benz he's shown time and time again that he prefers to take the defender on himself, it's why he gets double teamed, not because he doesn't have support, he's a little like Ronaldo in that sense, unless he's tired or theres a very low block that is stifling his dribbling when the ball gets out to him it's not coming back that often

i see all this when i watch the games, not some inane robotic, "man, Mendy doesn't cross the halfway line, he's stupid" stuff, but then, i really do try to enjoy the football rather than just watching individuals to see what mistakes they make all the time because i don't like how they play, even when we win.

As for Alaba making the attack more dynamic well i don't know about that yet, we'll have to see how he and Vin get on which was the main point and "this is not an overreaction based on a few minutes against a garbage Juve team".

Is Mendy your favorite player? Seriously, that’s a lot of effort to defend him.

I watch RM consistently, so I see with regularity the flaws with Mendy. I’ve always said he’s a good defender, but in modern football a FB cannot be one dimensional.

Vinny had a great season but as you point out he’s getting double teamed. Maybe if Mendy actually came into the attacking 3rd, made an overlapping run instead of standing there like a cone or run to the middle to clog up space for Toni, Vinny could play a 1-2? You did notice as he was getting doubled in the back half of the season his stats dipped? I think if Alaba plays as LB Vinny could score 30 goals. I don’t know why you think it’s a take that warranted such a passionate response.

Let’s get the season going with real stakes and we’re going to see how it plays out.

Carlo is right. Frankfurt are likely to be ahead of us in their fitness preparation in time for the Super Cup.

The Bundesliga officially kicks off tomorrow with Frankfurt vs Bayern Munich

Our league campaign starts like three days after this game though so we’re pretty ready ourselves.

Looking forward to seeing the boys back.

yeah the problem is in the last 12 years we have had Marcelo, Coentrao as our main LBs, neither of them defensively sound, and so many people were always complaining. Flo goes and gets a very defensively sound LB who can actually push up, and you’ll start complaining he doesn’t go up as much.end y is a top notch LB, who do people want him gone. I really really don’t understand.

Mendy is not one dimensional, just cause he isn’t Marcelo or Roberto Carlos going forward doesn’t mean he’s not a top LB who can get forward.

I also take it with passion because it’s quite annoying to have to read about the fake shortcomings of this team, when there are actual shortcomings that have to be addressed. Also sucks for mendy, who almost never puts a foot wrong all game, saved us (for me we began to win the CL when he made that goal line clearence vs City) and still has to turn in the news and find shit like: should mendy be sold and Reguillon brought back or some stupid take like that.

I came here excited to post after the game but someone was crapping up the thread with ranting punditry of this exhibition game so I just closed the browser window. But I'll try now....

Yeaaaah, this game was really fun to be at, super festive and totally celebratory, over 93 thousand people enjoying the afternoon and evening. So great to view the team live, will never get tired of it, even if it's not the greatest game ever. I'm quoting this post because this is the main feeling that I walked out of the stadium with, a chest full of pride for the champagne football we are famous for and the continuing joy & wonder of the championship season we pulled off last year. What a pleasure to witness our players confidently doing their thing, having fun and and they created several stunning moments. And there was some goofiness... Ancelotti kind of snuck onto the field pregame without an announcement or anyone really noticing until our section started yelling and chanting at him and he gave us a bow. Casimiro was being hilarious and the old guys were having some fun with Angel Di Maria. It was great when the kids came in too. Tchouameni was so cute and earnest, he wanted to show Carlo what he's got so bad. :inlove:

And whoa, seeing in person the way Benzema carries himself now as leader of the team, fully fit and fully present warms my heart. All those years of frustration we went through (and it was many years ) where he was often out of shape, slow & loafing, brick-footed, and my pet peeve, killing chances by lazily walking back from an offside position and being unavailable to pass to when our midfield recovered possession, grrrrr. He's always had so much talent and potential but we wouldn't know which Karim we would get. I'm really proud of him earning where he is today because ya know, it could have gone the other way.

Many many in the crowd had the brand new purple or "14" camisetas ($$$$ for us!) and there were tons of Real Madrid tents and peñas tailgating in the park. My guess is it was 90% RM fans and 10% Juventus.

    I didn't get great photos but here's a few:

I know this is dumb but I can't help it.... seeing the Real Madrid bus pass by in my own town led by our own local police with all sirens blaring really tickled me. :p

Dammit, I can't see through those windows.

RM parties all over the park.

    A beautiful evening it was.

He's gonna shoot it into the goalie, isn't he...

    Here comes Lukita...

Realized this is from the same attack that was on the video I quoted.

Are you serious? Mendy was ball watching at the end of the CL final when Salah nearly scored and Tibo bailed us out.

Mendy is a good defender. Not elite. If he’s going to be ONE dimensional he’s gotta be elite. Anyway, he’s not going anywhere so enjoy watching him do his training cone routine week in and week out while Vinny gets doubled.
