What's that, we signed a DP and it's raining outside? Aaah yes, we did sign a DP, and no, it's only this nerd Levien peeing on my shoe again. It must be nice to be that rich and still claim poverty when convenient, which seems to be always. This whole Rooney thing reminds me a bit of the Wizards when they brought back Michael Jordan into a management role. It took the Wizards about 5 minutes before they had him suit up to make a quick buck off him, then turn right back around and resume the dumpster fire operation they've been for the last 40 years.
Julian, how do you find the time to post here between practices and home life in Vancouver? Or is this Hernan? Or Junior? Or Joseph? Felipe - I didn't know you had it in you.
Nor do I. It is neither a positive nor a negative. A free transfer could mean that NYRB didn't attempt to re-sign him or he simply had a better offer. The DCU front office certainly deserves our skepticism but (1) I assume this has Rooney's stamp of approval (that carries some weight with me) and (2) it's not like Pálsson was playing in the USL. Schalke is a big club with lots of history and they were just promoted backed to the Bundesliga. He was the captain most of last season. Signing a quality defensive mid seems like a logical move for this club. We'll just have to see if he's actually got the quality they are betting on.
The fact he's a DP isn't a big deal b/c they've essentially said they'll buy him down next season and get another DP. That's good planning, not something to be chided for. If he's not good enough, that's a separate matter. I'm with you, I don't about the quality of the signing, but he comes from a known entity and they need help at the spot.
Why do we assume anything here is Rooney authorized or has a Rooney stamp of anything all of a sudden? Seems like wishful thinking considering the last, i don't know, 14 years.
I obviously have no firsthand knowledge but I have a hard time imaging Kasper and Rushton would force a DP signing over Rooney's objections before he has even stood on the sidelines as manager. This is not Chad Ashton they are dealing with now. That would be so stupid that I can't even imagine that DCU, or any front office, would do such a thing after bringing in one of the biggest names in world football as manager. Makes zero sense on any planet.
His own quote is "When Wayne Rooney calls you and tells you how he wants you to join the club, ...." So, he's told us of Rooney's direct involvement in some stage of his recruitment. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Cghof64pR-7/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
Isn't that the process for recruitment? Doesn't the coach typically call a new player? I am sure I have ready similar quotes from other players including Flores and Arriola. That doesn't necessarily mean direct decision making.
DC are acquiring RSL goalkeeper David Ochoa for allocation money with an eye on re-signing Ochoa, who is out of contract after this season. D.C. United & Real Salt Lake agree to trade that sends GK David Ochoa to Washington for allocation money, sources say. Awaiting MLS approval. Ochoa, who chose MEX over USA for intl career, in RSL’s doghouse, no games. Last year of contract. DCU would aim to reach new deal. #dcu— Steven Goff (@SoccerInsider) July 28, 2022
Interesting - I was just reading earlier in the week how he was getting offers from all over and how dumb RSL was for getting nothing for him - for us, it's either even dumber, or sheer genius, to get him for a little while before he decides to leave or we convince him to stay. Maybe we have some Garberbucks set to expire soon.
Bye Bill, thanks for the memories. Seems clear now that DCU does not intend to offer a new deal to Hamid in the off-season.
Is this like spending money (that you have to spend) on someone who might pan out at a critical position (GK), but who could also be a tradable asset.
I hate to condemn Romo given such an atrocious defense in front of him. Maybe he excels with a modestly competent defense but from what I've heard about Ochoa a d who was interested in him I'm cautiously optimistic.
Maybe, but he's almost been chipped a few times which could mean positioning issues and he doesn't look comfortable on his feet. It could just be how he is but he doesn't exude the confidence of top 10 keepers in the league.
If they don't re-sign him, I agree. But if they do, it's a nice get. He's 21 and played at all the youth levels and was successful there. Won a championship in USL. Played 25 games with RSL last season and was chosen for the full Nats during the NL in '19-'20. If they can sign him and he plays well, he's already had interest from teams like ManU and Barcelona. Selling him on is like found money.
I felt he blew it at the youth level for the US and ran at the first sign of adversity. He would have been in the mix for ‘22 and probably 1st choice in ‘26. Thx, Jay!
How did he blow it at youth level? They won Conca. If he 'blew' it after that, he'd be in a long line. Guy's a kid, probably as dumb and immature as the normal 21 year old. I like getting in on this at the ground floor, I think our coaching staff can reach him.
The "youth level"? Whatever. He's almost certainly better than anyone we have available right now so even if we can't re-sign him this makes sense. He should have a chip on his shoulder and something to prove going into a new contract year so he should be highly motivated. And if he plays well and we can sign him we have a post-Hamid solution at GK. I like this move. What is the downside? Romo is mediocre at best and Kempin is awful. P.S. - I'm shocked to find myself saying something nice about the FO!
