I agree he needs a bit more time to develop and I'm not totally convinced he will climb to level of international play. But I''ve seen enough growth so far for me to think he has potential. He is the one person that can hit a long diagonal pass/switch accurately. And ball skill wise, very often after a nice hard tackle, he comes away with the ball utilizing highly skillful touches to gain/maintain possession - and then he find the outlet to relieve pressure and begin the attack. So I'm not seeing big deficiencies. In fact I come away more impressed the more he is on the ball.

upload_2022-7-21_16-40-1.png I’m sticking with my story until proven wrong no way is he on a 3year guaranteed contract. I believe their could be a team option

Grain of salt here but the advanced stats don't agree with that. What I see is often a tentative non-line splitting passes. He recycles the ball a lot. The question is that the case because that is what Porter is asking of him

    I will defend the signing.

No arguing it hasn't worked out, but just because you hit on 12 and get a face card does not mean standing pat was the right move.

We had just won the title. COVID was everywhere so transfers and scouting were limited. We were in win now mode. Molino had had a great season. I liked it then (and the BWP move). It was a good gamble, but we just lost on it (so far).

But Molino got hurt (along with Valenzuela, Artur, Vito, Kitchen, and others) and BWP finally ran out of gas.

I think we still would have got him on a 1 year deal and his agent really got the better of us and anything over 1 year was foolish and everyone knew his injury history and age which is why nobody would offer more than 1 year. Bez has done a lot of good things but he definitely got bluffed really bad on this deal

He's not a 10. He's a 6 or 8. His #1 job is break up passes by the other team and win balls, which he does very well. As a result many of his pases are the recycling type. To complete his game, he will need to be better on attack side. but even now I see him getting into good spots to receive the ball. Our wingers aren't always the best at finding him. I get excited when I see him in the penalty area as I want to see him contribute on the score sheet. He seems to be getting forward more lately. I see him as a more physical ball hawking Wil Trapp...who we all know got some NT experience but never evolved his game enough to stay at that high level or get to europe - although that was a different time and he may have had such chances had it been today.

This 100%. Everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY around the league thought it was a brilliant move. He was widely considered to be one of the top 3 wingers in the league if not in fact number one.

To say that it didn't work out is an enormous understatement but that doesn't mean it was a dumb move. Sometimes shit just doesnt work out, in which case hindsight is lovely but not dispositive.

As for the length and size of his deal, the Crew was bidding against a number of other teams and that's what they had to offer to get him.

That’s why i say it’s dumb , everyone offered him 1yr because that’s smart . We acted a lil desperate in my opinion. Molino is a very good mls player when healthy. But you don’t add older guys with injury history to multiple years it’s just a poor strategy / high risk move

The MLSPA reported there was no option.

The MLSPA reported he’s not out of contract.

That means it’s guaranteed. Like Cucho. Like Zelerayan. Like Degenek. Like Nagbe.

    Its not rocket science.

I dont even know what a Kyle brew is

none the less i believe we have a team option to make it a 2yr deal even if it’s technically a 3yr deal.

This is why i say he won’t be on the opening day roster next year . Bez can’t be that incompetent and risk so much for a old injury plagued player . I refuse to believe until i see it

Can you clarify what you want to bet over?

is it: Molino wasn't signed to a 3 year contract?

Or is it: Molino won't be on the roster at the beginning of the 2023 season?

Because you're very likely wrong about the first point. But not being on the roster for the the 2023 season might occur for various reasons. Like we buy out his contract or trade him in the off-season.

Yea the revisionist history used to lambast Bez for a number of signings has been pretty comical to watch. Molino, BWP, Kitchen, and the rest of the signings made after we won the cup were pretty much universally praised. Seriously, go read through the 2021 roster thread leading up to the season or read any preseason write ups about our roster. The general consensus was that we were so deep we essentially had two starting lineups capable of beating anyone in the league.

But then, injuries happened. A lot of them. And the season pretty much fell apart during the summer. Once most of the key guys were healthy, we finished the season very strong and nearly made the playoffs, but we couldn't overcome the disastrous summer. As a result, many people completely disregarded the praise they had heaped on Bez just 9 months prior and were now convinced that he was clueless and Porter was inept.

    Ah, the beauty of sports.

Just for all the people crying that Molino was too old......he was 30 when we signed him.

Like 30 is too old for anything but a 1 year deal? Come on, people.

Since we do have him for another year, I guess the play is to see if/when he gets healthy how much he can help.

It sure would be a boon if he can deliver some goals.
